Beau's son is in rec soccer and it seems like basically no rules apply during those games. Supposedly they limit the number of spectators to one per kid, but it was all full families when we were there since it's a the really nice park with the big playground. No official mask rule for spectators, just encouraged. And no masks for the kids. It kind of blew my mind, especially for the kids on the sideline all sitting right next to each other.
I'm really bummed out that we've heard nothing about 4H since everything shut down. My kids really enjoyed it and it's such an easy distancing activity. It was only a half dozen kids in a huge barn or field. They could easily wear masks. I was thinking maybe once school started up that we'd hear something again, but nope. I'm not going to seek out another club for them to join right now since all the fairs are cancelled anyway, but I feel bad that they have literally no activities to do right now. We're skipping gymnastics due to terrible safety policies at the gym.
I just found out that there is no mask requirement for DD2’s tournament this weekend. So she would be playing against 3 different teams from different states, no masks required. They’re still young enough that they tend to clump up around the ball. No mask rules for spectators either.
I’ve been hearing that the school principal is requiring a negative COVID test for any kids in sports tournaments out of state. And the test she requires takes a minimum of 48 hours. So if we did go to this tournament, she’d likely be out of school for at least 2-3 days. I know she’s sad, but I’m really glad we decided against it.
Thinking ahead, DS typically does rec basketball starting in January. I'm not quite as on board as this as soccer because it would be indoors, and players are likely unmasked. However, they would not play games. Their team would be a pod. So they would do 1 night practice just their team, and then an inter squad game (only their team) on Saturdays. Guests would be limited to parents and siblings only and masked.
What does WP think? There would probably be less teams.
waverly, I would be comfortable with that. I wouldn’t be comfortable with playing other teams, though. But that’s assuming we don’t see a insane spike between now and January.
waverly, I would be okay with that. I would assume they would be doing lots of drills. Why do you say no masks? Here all sports have to play with masks on outside or in.
DD's current coaches didn't ask for DD to have a deadline and we upset about it when they found out. They asked how they are supposed to coach DD being the only level 3 and still give the level 4 group attention and the head coach told them to figure it out. So DD has annoyed coaches plus DD and I are annoyed. DD has a private lesson Friday with a non team coach for an hour. Coach Jon will give her a private lesson next Tuesday after practice.
Talking with some other parents and they were wishing we could do a sign up sheet to be able to watch parts of practice to see what are kids are doing. I said yeah I would love to since DD is struggling with level 3 skills. The other two parents both told me no your DD is skipping level 3 and just doing level 4. So all the kids think this because DD has been working level 4 skills all summer. Ugh I want to be a fly on the wall so bad

I don’t believe the actual players have to wear a masks. They aren’t for soccer.

We are one of the stricter areas for masks, and even here, they take the masks off when they play outdoors. We can't do anything indoors yet. Maybe in 2025.
Ice skating is non-contact. I think they are limited to less than 10% capacity and require no more than 1 staff member per 250 sq feet, and one student per 100 sq feet. DD's class which used to have 12-16 students in it now has 4, and they've decreased the number of simultaneous classes. They're only allowed to do training and conditioning, hockey is just doing drills. I did look it up, and indoors does require masks. I forgot that DD had to wear one.
Most dance and yoga studios are closed. Based on space requirements, DD's old studio could have one teacher and maybe 1/2 a student in it based on those guidelines.
Then add onto it that "Indoor Activities that Increase Respiratory Rate" are prohibited.
Basketball specifically, is prohibited indoors, and can open outdoors for training and drills only.
waverly , it is VERY frustrating because our state has one set of requirements and our county is like "nah, our state is stupid, we're going to be stricter." So you get a combination of public distrust/anger and people just going to other counties.
And at this point, I wish 2025 was a joke. I feel very hopeless about schools, let alone sports.
We require masks for some outdoor sports here (soccer, field hockey, cross country, no football yet). For some reason, no masks for ice hockey, but most leagues are saying no basketball this year. Not even with masks. I’m sad about that.
I guess we are lucky in the sense that IDPH is sort of running it all statewide, and the counties are going with it. The counties aren't just doing their own thing.
The state has sent some counties back in restrictions based on 8% positivity rate. They have moved back and forth. Now all counties except 2 are back in our best phase, which is phase 4. Phase 5 is the pandemic is over.
CA counties seem like they are all over the place.
DS1 doesn't have to wear a mask to play soccer, but coaches and all of the spectators are supposed to. Instead of a hand shake at the end of the game, the kids line up 6 feet across from each other and yell 'good game!'
My nephew is playing ice hockey. They are only allowed to have a certain number of kids on the bench. The rest have to sit in their gear in the locker room. At some point, they switch. Only 1 parent is allowed in to watch the games. No one is allowed in the practices.
The PA governor just made changes to the number of spectators allowed at indoor/outdoor events. A venue can have anywhere between 10 - 25% of max occupancy depending on venue size and if it is indoor or outdoor.
The spectators restrictions are very strange and inconsistent. For town, there are no restrictions on the numbers, but everyone needs masks - players, coaches, refs, spectators. Those electronic whistles are really hard to get used to.
Club soccer - if DD2 has a practice in the bubble, which is 2 full soccer fields, I’m not allowed in to watch. If she’s outside on the field next to the bubble, I can watch with a mask.
My niece plays varsity high school soccer. My sister can’t attend any away games, but home games are fine and everyone wears masks.
I imagine all other sports are similar. Except hockey. Hockey players are gods here, so they can do whatever the f they want. 🤷♀️
k3am, our rec classes only have 2-4 kids in them and they are running only 1 class at a time vs in March rec classes had 10 kids per group and 3 or 4 classes plus team practicing in the gym all at once. It was insane. DD says it is very quiet all the time now. I agree that companies want to make the PPP loans forgiven and to just stay afloat. I'm guessing the gym figured out how many kids per class to make the class break even on wages spent.
DH says ice skating had 20 kids at most on the rink. Usually there are well over 100. I don’t know how they can make a profit off that.
This year is probably just about staying afloat and keeping their employees working so they can get their PPP loans forgiven.
I don't see how that can even keep them afloat. PPP funds are likely already exhausted - I know every single one of my clients used 100% of their PPP funds and were eligible for forgiveness in the first 8 weeks. Some of them are using the 24 week period because it's easier to use it 100% for payroll than it is for some of permitted usages that SBA has given squishy or evolving guidance on.
k3am Sometimes businesses run at a loss. Obviously not ideal, but a business that has planned and prepared well can survive taking short or even long term losses. But I do think this pandemic is going to have long term effects on club sports.
madringal, I don't think many business can sustain losses for as long as they're going to have to. This is not something that will end in a few weeks/months. But yes, the rink has more money behind it than most businesses, so it will probably survive.
Conference is coming up. Top 7 kids get to run it, next three are alternates. Coach told the team that the meet they had this past Tuesday was the cutoff for making their decision and that meets results would weigh more heavily than any other meet they have ran so far.
I have no idea how it works. Top 7 fastest times? Best overall placing? No clue. But before the last meet DD had the 9th fastest overall time and she really wanted to run conference. So she killed it at this last meet. Dropped almost a minute and a half off her best time. Placed 5th for her team, 7th overall and moved up to 7th fastest overall. We were feeling pretty good that she earned a spot. Coach was supposed to announce on Wednesday, didn’t.
Then today, on their way to another meet she tells them this race might impact their choices too. Totally psyched DD out. She had a great time, but placed 10th on her team. 2 girls that had previously had slower times than her finished with faster times.
I’m just annoyed with wishy washy coaching. That was a really crappy thing to tell them just before the meet. DD finished the race (with a 20 second time dropped) and immediately burst into tears bc she knew she probably just lost her spot on the conference team.
Our friend asked us to do an indoor soccer thing. I checked their website - no masks.
I had read through all the IDPH regulations, and was still confused. I emailed the Park District where he will play basketball, and they said they are currently not wearing masks, and they are looking forward to the high school association of sports for guidelines. I don't know why high schools guidelines would be better than health department guidelines, but whatever. All high risk high school sports were deferred this fall, so there was no football etc.
What is more risk to my child (and bringing it home), Covid or the weight gain from being sedentary? He spent the lockdown on screens 8 hours a day and eating peanut butter sandwiches. eLearning in the morning and screens while I tried to work in the afternoon. The nanny took them to parks all summer and tried to get them active, but the damage from the lockdown was already done. Heart issues in kids with Covid is rare, but he does have a CHD.
waverly, could you just tell your DS that if he wants to play he has to wear a mask while at basketball. You could talk to the coach beforehand and explain why it is important to you that your DS wears it. DD has to wear one during her 3 hour practice and it doesn't phase her at all now.
186momx, yeah maybe we will just have him wear one anyway. It is harder for him to wear a mask due to his hearing aids, but it is doable, and chances are he will get used to it and forget about it.

It was good! Not her best run, but there were 20 MPH winds that day! So she added some time, but on pace with the rest of her team. She didn't place high enough for an individual ribbon, so I don't know what she placed, but overall they placed 4th out of like 7 teams. The coach's communication was obnoxious, but overall a great first XC experience. DD really enjoyed it and is considering joining the track team in the fall.
Awww....we got an email last night - DD2 was invited to the competition team! We totally did not expect this and she squealed so loud my ear drums may never recover!
186momx - I may be asking a lot of questions here soon! I have no experience with being a gym team mom!
So ice skating is always kind of a cluster, even in the best of times. DD has had to repeat classes while her friend moved up because they used the wrong assessment form for her friend, which lead to a lot of tears. It's even harder now because parents aren't allowed in the rink, so I can't tell what skills she is working on/has mastered.
We signed her up at the same level she was enrolled for in March when things shut down. She hadn't skated in the interim at all. Registration is open now for classes that start in 2 weeks. Her course is already completely full. We luckily ran into her teacher in the parking lot on Saturday morning, and found out that not only is she moving up, she needs to move up TWO levels.. and there's room in that class. Woo woo!
She apparently went from struggling with forward crossovers in March to having acceptable backward crossovers in two lessons. Pretty proud of the kid!
madringal, that awesome news! Entry fees for gymnast range here from $50-150 per meet and spectators have to pay to go to the meets too and those seem to range from $10-15 per person with some meets as high as $20. The spectator fees were the hardest for me to swallow as DD and I can go to a college meet for $8 general admission tickets. A well run meet will last about 4 hours and they look nothing like a college meet you watch on TV.
DD's update is she is down to 2 skills needed before Friday. Her roundoff back handspring without a spot on the floor and her front hip circle on the bar. She has the front hip like 95% of the way there. The tumbling has improved and she can do it on the tumble trak without a spot but still struggling on the floor. Good news is the office lady told me she overheard the coaches talking about how much DD has improved in such a short time and they were all very excited about that. DD wants to keep her private lessons with H because H makes her feel like she can do anything. I would love to see H take over the empty level 3 coaching spot instead of the two coaches trying to coach level3-5 in one group.
186momx Wow, your meet entry fees are high! The email said that ours were $20-$30/meet. Spectator fees sound about right, swimming is usually pretty similar. Although $20/person usually gets us in for 3 days of swimming!
I am so glad to hear she is getting those skills. I still think they are a bunch of jerks though. My favorite thing about DD's new gym is that it is so much less intense. The last place made it seem like GYM.IS.LIFE. And no, you cannot ask questions. And no, you may not know what the goals are. And yes, you must trust us blindly with your child and your money, and if we deem your child worthy on some subjective scale then *maybe* they can succeed. But if not, well then too bad. But, still, no questions.
