"The House adopted a resolution on Friday to formally condemn the alleged forced medical procedures, including hysterectomies, on migrant women detained at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Georgia.
The resolution, which passed 232-157, with 4 lawmakers voting “present,” condemns "performing unwanted, unnecessary medical procedures on individuals without their full, informed consent" and calls for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to comply with investigations into the Irwin County Detention Center in Ocilla, Ga."
Who are those soulless 157 + 4 assholes. Let me guess.
Jesus, how dangerous is it, politically, to condemn nonconsensual surgeries? You're not voting to for reparations, it's literally an announcement.
What a bunch of cowards. I'm gonna look for who voted which way.
It doesn’t even say anything about immigrants! So they just voted no on a resolution that, in theory, could be applied to regular US citizens. (Not that the alternative would make it any better.)
Can we start drugging men and castrating them? I know they don’t want that, but so what, who cares if people consent to medical procedures performed on them.
Good Lord. I’m so fucking disgusted. Every goddamn day is a new low in some way.

I think you missed the text of the whole resolution, but yes it absolutely talks about immigrants. I wanted to read the whole thing to fully understand why the idiots voted nay. It’s pretty clear why, it’s because the resolution talks about reproductive choice and immigrants. You know those shitbags are against both.

You’re right. I was referring to the link above though, which doesn’t state anything about immigrants.
Still. My point stands that they’re saying certain groups of people should not have the right to decline surgery. Why is that only applied to immigrants and could it legally be applied to other groups? It’s a very dangerous slope we’re on here. I’m get a strong eugenics vibe that is making me feel like we’re perilously close to Nazi Germany.
WTF is wrong with people!?! I am in NC and except for tv commericials you wouldn't know this guy is even running in Charlotte. I guess we are solidly blue here. What a dumbass!
I just came here to post this. RAGE. This seat really could have gone blue. I hate him.
I’m still voting for him because fuck tillis but I’m so pissed. I’m sad for his family.
If the stakes weren’t so high this is absolutely a time that I would decline to vote that specific race. But we can’t afford that. That’s another reason I’m so angry: I have to vote for him anyway.

Well I guess for Cal it’s good that it’s 2020 and affairs seem waaaaaaay below other important stuff going on? Still, so shitty and you can’t risk anything in a close race.
NC resident here. I'm so pissed. It's not that I care that he had an affair. I don't. What pisses me off is that it is such a stupid thing to do when you are running for office. And don't be even dumber by texting so there are receipts. It's so risky and makes me question his judgement. These powerful guys always think they won't get caught.

I care because he put his wife in a position to now be on a national stage dealing with this.
But maybe I’m terrible because I’m voting for him and I didn’t even second guess it when I heard this news. The senate is just too important.
I'm seeing speculation on Twitter that there is risk to the R's of enough Senators getting COVID and having to quarantine to prevent a quorum. Currently Lee, Tillis, and Johnson, and they need 51 for a quorum. The speculation says D's could boycott (e.g. arguing safety). I'm a little fuzzy on whether Pence could count as their 51st here or if he only can come in at the end as a tie-breaker.
Is this an actual possibility or just a pipe dream?

I think the concern is with getting it out of Committee. If Lee and Tillis quarantine for 14 days they would miss the currently scheduled date and Dems could refuse to show up. However I think the are both saying they will quarantine for 10 days.

This is true. I mean, the tax returns were *this week.*

StrawberryBlondie the release of information seems interesting to me. Early, in person voting starts October 15th. So I'm not surprised it was leaked at the beginning of October.

It is really, really not that hard to keep it in your pants. What. The. Fuck.
I am tired of the arrogance of men (white men, in particular) ruining things like the ability to create and pass laws and confirm judges who respect civil rights and equity. They can all go piss up a rope. Republican and Democrat alike.

Jane Mayer of the New Yorker seems to be confirming this on Twitter. She says Pence cannot break a tie in a quorum vote, and it applies to the committee.
Mitch says they'll move forward anyway, of course.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) will move to delay the Senate’s return for two weeks after three lawmakers tested positive for COVID-19.
McConnell said the Senate will not return until Oct. 19 and will only meet in pro forma sessions for the next two weeks, allowing a smaller number of lawmakers to be on Capitol Hill. Previously-scheduled floor activity will take place after Oct. 19.
McConnell said the move will not impact the start of her confirmation hearings, which are set to begin on Oct. 12.
“Since May, the Judiciary Committee has operated flawlessly through a hybrid method that has seen some Senators appear physically at its hearings while other members have participated virtually. The Committee has utilized this format successfully for many months while protecting the health and safety of all involved. Certainly all Republican members of the committee will participate in these important hearings," McConnell continued.
Each hexagon represents one congressional district. Solid hexes are Yea votes.
Extremely proud of my Representative, Pramila Jayapal for sponsoring this bill!
Ugh, I wish Cathy McMorris-Rodgers had a stronger challenger. I'm really, really hoping Carolyn Long beats Jaime Herrera-Beutler. I liked JHB when she co-sponsored what I considered a fairly important bill allowing rape victims to be able to garnish disability pensions, alongside Suzan Delbene, but everything after that (for the past six or so years) just roils the conscience.
I like Will Hurd in TX. I'm sad he's not running again. He had probably the best idea I've come across regarding "the fence" for immigration purposes. Instead of actually building a fence, set up cable and use drones and cameras to oversee the border, and CBP can be sent where needed per camera/drone viewpoint rather than aimlessly patrolling the area. The cable can also be used to reinforce the infrastructure of the poorer towns along the border, so schools and homes can have internet access that don't have options now. He represents the area with the longest border between the US and Mexico, and I can see this working for his constituents much better than an actual wall would. And he voted Aye on this. One of the seven Republicans (two from TX so go Texas.) that did so.
Pat Toomey, PA's republican senator, is expected to announce that he will not run for re-election in 2022 and will retire (not seek the open governor's position). While I am glad he will be out of PA politics after the next election cycle I am not pleased that he will basically be accountable to no one in the interim since he doesn't care if he pisses off his constituents.

1.) I am wondering if he is doing this so that he won't be accountable to his constituents.
2.) I am wondering if he is doing this because he knows that whomever runs against him is going to get a lot of support fundraising from people who are targeting his Senate seat. Pennsylvania's other Senator is a Democrat. Maybe Toomey is currently looking at how Lindsay Graham's opponent is kicking Graham's ass in fundraising right now.
