I have had a deep, wet cough ever since I got the flu back in January. It's a terrible year to have a persistent, hacking, productive cough. I have had every test and Rx under the sun. This morning I had a CT scan of my sinuses and I am just praying they find SOMETHING that we can treat and be done. My body is just wreaked from all this coughing and I am exhausted.
The kids and I are hosting a food drive this month. If we collect enough items, my financial services company will also donate cash to the food pantry, so we decided to give it a shot and see if we can hit the goal. My sun porch is filling up quickly with stuff. I made a chart for the kids to check off as they count each item to see how close we are to our goal. We've had donations from friends, family, and even random people in town who saw my post on Facebook. I've even had friends from far away send me money on Venmo so I can go buy some donations too. It's been such a feel good thing to have going on!
The food pantry we're donating to sends bags of food home with school kids in town who rely on school breakfast and lunch as their main source of food during the week so that they have stuff to eat over the weekend. It's definitely a group that's near and dear to my heart and I imagine more families than usual need the help this year.
Well the Halloween get together we were talking about doing for the girls is now off the books. One of the moms works as a nurse at the hospital and the number of cases over the weekend really spiked. We all agreed we want the girls to be able to keep practicing and the gym to stay open so we will do our part and not gather.
My sister was exposed on Thursday at school but not directly. A student athlete was at practice pending a covid test which was positive. She found out while she was cleaning our office on Sunday. The entire school staff was told to quarantine for 14 days. My dad is all paranoid and now say we have to quarantine because sis was in our office building. We were not here at the same time.
I'm PMsing, extremely cranky, and just want to curl up in a ball.

I got an email over the weekend telling me that DS will start hybrid school in November. I'm excited that he gets to go back to school since he's such a social kid.
I was going to take the day off today to go pick up car parts with beau, but that fell through so I'm working. Work isn't bad but I'm still burned out.
Weekend was a roller coaster of emotions so I'm tired. I spent Friday night writing a eulogy and it was the hardest speech I ever had to write or say. Hoping it helps me with future public speaking? We had soccer Saturday morning in the sleet and rain and then went to a dairy-free bakery in the city we were playing in. First time taking DD1 and she was in heaven, so happy she could have almost any and all the treats in the bakery - that is a first! We then went to my 33 year old cousin's funeral service. He was like a brother to me growing up so it has been a really tough week. I made it through the speech with only a couple pauses for tears so felt good about it. My DH was going to be my back-up if I couldn't make it through it but he said he couldn't get through reading it without tearing up and told me it was really heartfelt. His son, my aunt, uncle and cousins are all devastated.
Sunday was DD2's birthday. We blew up tons of balloons, made her a special turtle cake and I took her to the local paint shop with my mom, DD1 and her cousin. We had a lot of fun painting pottery. She had such a great day that she cried herself to sleep because she wanted tomorrow and every day to be her birthday. LOL.
We had a pretty nice buy very busy weekend.. I'm behind at work and got called for jury duty. And oh yeah, I don't have my ID, since I lost that last week. I do thankfully have my passport, so at least I have photo ID. And it's not expired like I thought it was, since I had to get a new one after I changed names. So small favors. Really wish I could find the ID though. I finally have one with a picture I like!

I have to order groceries and can’t think of anything that sounds appealing for the kids breakfast or our lunches. Ugh. I’m burnt out. This year’s tax season was the longest ever. Hopefully the next few weeks are slower at work so I start feeling normal again.
Weekend was good. Went out to dinner with my brother and SIL and hiked in some historic cemeteries in the mountains with my mom and grandma. My oldest is on day 13 of quarantine after covid exposure at school (14 days seems honestly so excessive, but whatever). She had a negative test at 8 days post exposure. I feel pretty confident she didn’t catch it.
Figured out what to do about my youngest’s birthday next month. He wants to go visit a wolf sanctuary about 2 hours away so we will do a full moon feeding tour and then stay at the great wolf lodge that is about halfway between our house and the wolf sanctuary. Perfect.
Also because I’m going completely stir crazy we are insanely considering Disneyworld in February. We will see what we decide.
Weekend was up and down. DD1 is still struggling with her behavior, and spend a lot of it in lockdown. DD2 and I got out to go bowling (place was great - they hand you a bucket of newly sanitized bowling balls, no one nearby, most people wore masks but there were only 3 lanes out of 20 taken). Then we picked out pumpkins to carve.
Sunday DD2 woke up with a cold, so she's home today. We need to go to a testing site shortly that is 30 minutes away to get a PCR test (rapid tests are not acceptable). It's a 2-5 day turnaround, so I need to start battling with the school regarding getting her remote access. They won't let her back until there's a negative test. She has to quarantine until we have results.
I got back DD1's neuropsych and educational assessment. Lots of diagnoses, but none directly related to her oppositional behavior. I'm glad we can start to formulate a plan for her education, but man I'm tired.
So, since we moved to this city about 13 years ago, I've been called for jury duty 5 times. Twice deferred due to breastfeeding, one murder trial (10 days of jury duty selections and dismissed), and one criminal gang trial (1 week), and now this one.
In the same amount of time, DH has been called.. once. To a case that was in and out in about a week.
And this one is a criminal grand jury. They'll do selections on Wednesday and the service period is through the middle of December, but could be longer depending on how things go. I am pretty sure my chances of getting dismissed are non-existent.
k3am, I went on a similar streak with jury duty for a while. I was getting called before the grace period was up, I was called for Federal Grand duty and state duty on the same day... and then all of a sudden, it stopped. I haven't been called since I was pregnant with DD1, and she just turned 11. But before that, 7,494 times.
DH has been called once in the almost 16 years that I've known him.
k3am, the one time I was called it was for Grand Jury. The guy running it clearly had it all down to a science. We arrived the first morning, there was some waiting until he arrived. Then he gave a speech and said since it would be for 5-6 weeks he didn't want to blow up people's lives. There was the core group. Then the alternates and then everyone else would be dismissed. We did a kind of speed interview where he went through the entire group of more than 100 people to narrow it down. In my interview, I told them I really couldn't do it because I was the only one to get the kids to school and off the bus. DH was working locally I think but didn't get home until 7pm most nights. He didn't make me serve. There were a few people that wanted to serve- retired people or teachers who wanted to get out of school ha ha. All pre-covid days of course.
He called the names of the people selected and we were out of there by 1:30. I think he calls a bigger group than really needed, so that he will have more yeses.
There is no getting out of showing up that first day though- no deferring. You had to go and give your reason.
I am just.. I really don't know how I am supposed to make it work. I went from a division of 6 people (with two that could step in for me) to a division of 3 (with no overlap of responsibilities.)
Jury duty is in session 3 days per week. So that leaves me two days a week plus nights and weekends, I guess? I'm kind of freaking out.
I know I'm putting the cart before the horse, since they haven't done selections, but we started with a pool of about 40, 3 were excused for not meeting the criteria, 6 indicated they didn't think they spoke English well enough, and I'm sure there were also people requesting to be excused due to hardship. They need 26 jurors. At the MOST they have like 5 people that they can dismiss because they don't like them. And I may be a bitch in general, but I hide it well. The murder trial took them 2 days in the box before they excused me.. and that was with me saying that I had a family member that had been shot and killed by a gang member. There were like 30 people they went through before they decided they didn't want me.
The sitting and waiting thing sucks.. today was show up at 9. They didn't call us back until 11. Gave us the spiel, and dismissed us until Wednesday.
I think they need to know that I can't handle going two hours without eating without getting hangry, and that I pee a lot. Not that I'd say these things, but it's true.
k3am, every district is different, I am sure. I freaked out for weeks and week over it. I even have the posts on here to prove it. So yeah, I totally understand freaking out.
Late Monday random - I realized I had completely forgotten my cell phone reimbursement from work for all of 2020. They don't cover the entire bill, just a portion of it, so I never really noticed that it wasn't in my paycheck each week. Well, now I'm getting a big fat check to cover all the missed payments PLUS a portion of the new cell phone I got!
k3am- In a grand jury selection, there aren’t any peremptory challenges (the “I don’t like this one” challenges). They are honestly basing selection on who can show up and be present. So I would totally tell them you need to eat every 2 hours and you pee a lot. And that you’re concerned about your job.
It's been a difficult couple of weeks with DD1. Behavior stuff, then got her neuropsych and ed assessment uncovering all sorts of things that we didn't know about and have no idea how to address. DD2 is sick and we had to scramble to get her a COVID test yesterday, and she can't go back to school until we get the test back... so just nuts around here. I'm not sleeping, my anxiety is through the roof.
DD2 has a soccer game on Sunday. Hasn't had a game with this team in 4 weeks because we didn't attend the tournament (which... a lot of good that did, because she ended up sick anyway...). It's 7:30 arrival, so we leave at 7:10.
DH is strongly hinting that he would like to go golfing. Leaving me to drag both kids out of bed on a Sunday morning get them dressed and fed and out the door by 710. Alone. Because he would like to go golfing.
k3am, also see if you boss can write you a letter explaining how you being gone for an extended period would put a hardship on the company. Something along the lines of K3am works in a small division and is covering for an employee who is battling cancer. Our office can't function without her.
DH's boss did this for DH (small company, big jobs that can't be rescheduled, I need my head guy) and it worked. I also know of self employed people who only have one income and they seem to get off too.
mae0111, Your DH can easily golf once you and DD2 get home from the game. You should all be home by 9 which is still gives him the whole day to play. Plus here that is the expensive time slot to play golf still. My DH plays a lot of after 4pm golf when it is half the cost.
Our school district started in person (100% for K-5, hybrid for 6-12) on 10/1. They announced last night that the superintendent is recommending to the board a return to full virtual this effing Thursday. The kids will have had 6 days of in person school by that point (or like my oldest who got quarantined she got a whole 2 days of in person). Eff everything. Seriously eff everything. I’m so angry and bitter I can’t focus on anything else.
It’s making me want to run for the school board next year though.
mrsGreeko , you should run. FYI, if you are running for the April 2021 election you need to pick up your packet now and get signatures and turn it back in. I think turn in is usually in December here, and the person first goes first on the ballet. Usually they are here at the same time, and we draw names out of a hat or something.
If we don't have 5 day a week school in August 2021, I may have a breakdown. If there is a vaccine it should be distributed in spring. summer, so we can go back to school right?
You should all run if you are unhappy with how school is going. I wouldn't say I am "happy" with school, but I've sat in some board meetings and seen the health department guidelines, so I know they are doing everything they can. But if I was angry and bitter and not satisfied- run!

This is what I read last night too - obviously as an attorney, you've got that one memorized lol. I am also a rule follower and feel like making excuses (eating/peeing) is shirking my civic duty. I'm basically leaps and bounds above most as an ideal juror. I will mention that I'm concerned about my job and work coverage, since I think that's a valid concern, but when I did the murder trial selections, the judge repeatedly told prospective jurors that a hardship for the employer isn't something they generally take into consideration.

Apparently a school district near me is telling them that they expect to be hybrid next school year too. . So apparently we are just going to do this forever because its for “safety” so it’s acceptable to isolate an entire generation of kids indefinitely.
I think school board elections are only in the fall, we only ever get ballots for November. I should look into it though.
ETA: conveniently the person serving from my district in the school district’s term expires next November. And it looks like I will need to submit my interest or something by September next year.

I mean... CA governor just announced that even if there is a vaccine, CA isn't getting it until they've done their own independent testing, and maybe not until Q3 2021. Because clearly the FDA isn't good enough. Basically, the orange man wants it, so clearly, we can't trust it.

If I were confident in the FDA approval process (which I mostly am). I watched Fauci on 60 minutes Sunday, I would go to nearby state to get the vaccine. Let's get this crap over with.
