So I got the girls spayed last Friday (so nearly a week ago), and Gumdrop - the rambunctious one who is the troublemaker - has potentially got a hernia situation going on now. I check their incisions every day, and there is no infectious process going on that I can tell (I'm a medical assistant and can tell if things are going that way), but she has some swelling I can't explain other than herniation. Her skin is still intact, and there isn't any bleeding or anything, but the bulging I see concerns me because it comes and goes. She is acting like it's uncomfortable or painful because she bites me and cries a bit when I touch it to see what the swelling feels like. We have kept them isolated as much as possible in our bathroom/bedroom, but she still gets into trouble and jumps up on things without regard because she is like that.
I will be calling the vet today when I get a minute (I'm at work), but has anyone had experience with this? I'm scared she'll need another surgery to close everything up again and that will set us back in both time and $$$. Ugh.

Ugh I'm sorry. We have 4 cats and got them all fixed at the same time and both my girls had issues. One did get an infection and the other had something similar to what you're talking about it. Hers ended up not being a hernia and healed fine on its own. Hopefully you have the same luck.

I only have dogs, but they can get a seroma along the incision/surgical site. The pressure can be uncomfortable, but the fluid is eventually resorbed. They just tell us to look for infection.
I got my kittens spayed last month, and they both had some swelling under the incision as it healed. My vet said that was normal, it was just the internal stitches dissolving and being absorbed.
I even took one of them back to the vet at one point, thinking she'd split it open enough to need to be re-stitched, but it was fine. A little irritated, but it didn't need anything more than some ointment on it a few times a day for about a week. Both have since healed beautifully.

You guys are making me feel so much better! Thank you so much. I really hope this is just a reaction to the stitches and not herniated internal organs.
