I'm shopping to (finally) replace the chandelier in my dining room, the one that is there was 1985 builder basic that I spray painted about 10 years ago. It's time for it to go.
It is between 19-20" wide, and feels a tad small to me. With the leaves up, the table is 39" wide. What range of widths should I be looking at? Like 20-24" maybe?
Do you always keep the leaves up? General guides are 1/2-2/3 of the width and 30-36” above the table top. It looks high to me in the picture, I think if you lower the new one you wouldn’t have to go much wider.
ETA: I agree with you sakura, that it is too high. I'm not going to bother adjusting it because after 12 years in this house I'm tired of looking at it no matter how high it is! But the new one should be lower.
How wide is the room? Length? We went with an oblong but our table is very long lengthwise even without the leaf (it sits 8-12). It doesn’t quite have the width I would like but the length was more important for the visual from the living room. The room is 12x12’.
I think something in the 22-24 range would give you the look you want without being overpowering. I agree that lowering the fixture will make a big difference as well.
This is an oblong fixture that meets the look you are going for (dark metal, glass cover). The oblong fixtures are unfortunately more expensive though.
Ours is 10'x11', which is a lot closer to square than I expected before I measured. But I guess the furniture arrangement contributes to the more linear feel. The table seats 8, plus on holidays (at least pre-covid, sob) we add on and run the tables through the doorway into the living room. My dad made the table, and several others with matching widths and leaves specifically for that purpose.
Arg, ok, so this one is 28"H x 25.5"W x 25.5"D - about 6" wider than the one I have now. I love it, but it doesn't come in a smaller version.
Would it be too big? Too modern with the traditional framed mirrors?
The framed mirrors and coordinating sideboard are cherry pieces that belonged to my parents. They're more traditional than I would have chosen myself, but replacement is not on the horizon. I think I am struggling a little with something that looks a little more modern, but can also go in the same room as those pieces.

Susie, I think due to the colour of that last piece you posted, it doesn't look super modern. You could get away with it. We have lights in our living room which have a modern twist but old feel to them which is the same with the above. As far as size, I'd cut out something that is the same size from cardboard and see what you think (I would rather have slightly bigger versus smaller).
I agree. I think the color of the fixture, the hanging chain, and the candelabra bulbs all kind of balance out the shape and don’t make it scream ‘modern.’ I don’t think it’ll seem too big. Really just 3in on each side, right?
