Yes exactly. We absolutely cannot do anything as individuals about what other people do in their own time whether that's teachers, doctors, nurses, etc even though we have to interact with those people. That doesn't mean that we don't think it's wrong or they shouldn't be flamed. If my friend who is a teacher told me they were regularly working out I'd tell them the exact same thing that I don't think it's a good idea, but that doesn't mean I think that their students/student's parents should be able to get them fired for engaging in such activity.
So the choices are to accept the risk by going to school, the doctor, etc because you don't know what people are doing in their free time or completely isolate yourself. Unfortunately you cannot dictate what other do in their free time.
wanderingback, I do completely agree with what you said here. I just felt like in the beginning of the post there was some dismissing of this teachers behavior and felt like she was being held to a far lower standard than other posters/teachers on this board.
I didn't see the other post. I really can't control what dumb things other people do. My colleagues ask all the time "can I tell my staff to not go out to bars on the weekend?" and the answer is no. That's why we have to wear the masks at the places that mandate it (schools, stores, dental offices, etc.) so that the rest of us don't have to be subjected to the consequences of someone else's dumb decisions.
The poster in the OTF thread is the same one that went BSC on a mask post on current events about not leaving restaurant reviews on yelp. Seems to be one who is very particular about her views.
This place is weird. So many people think it’s nbd for a teacher to be unmasked at Trump rally (aka around others who likely don’t care about covid), but another teacher working out, in a mask, with the place sanitized every 45 mins was super problematic and she was putting all her students at risk.
I will say, I agree with others in this thread that unfortunately this is one of the many risks of in person school and it sucks majorly. I hate these decisions have to be made and I’m sorry you are in this position.
That thread was partially why I asked this question. But I will say I’m feeling a bit like people are telling me “whatever, you asked for this by sending your kid to school in person, so don’t be shocked if he gets sick.” Perhaps I’m still being overly sensitive.
I mean, I know we are accepting a higher level of risk, but assumed (hoped?) the school community would be committed to following CDC recommendations about mask wear and large gatherings both inside and outside of work.
Also, I see a HUGE difference in a teacher going to a gym that is taking (imperfect) precautions to maintain her physical and mental health, and a person who would knowingly attend a large unmasked political rally whose attendees are known for flouting all the rules because ‘Merica.
Most of them probably are being careful and responsible. But even if 90% of people are taking precautions, there's still probably at least one family in your child's cohort that isn't...

No, I don’t think I would keep them home. Honestly someone who is engaging in that behavior is surely doing it more than just the once I’m afraid. So unless you are prepared to go all virtual then I would grit my teeth and hope the precautions do what they are supposed to I’m friends with a lot of past and present teachers on Facebook and...well...I see a lot of behavior not much better than this. A lot of the younger teachers at my son’s school attended a big Halloween party this weekend. Plenty of photos showed big groups inside. No masks in sight unless they were part of a costume. My son’s ela teacher is out of town in an area that’s a known hotspot right now with 8ish friends and photos all over bar looking places. My kids are virtual right now, but if they weren’t I can’t imagine I would take Them me out because we’ll be seeing this throughout the holidays I’m sure:

Oh hi! I do indeed have views. I didn’t go BSC, but I responded to someone who posted that they “were sure” no one in management would care so they wrote a bad review (her words) without talking to anyone. But she also didn’t say in the OP that no one had masks on, or it was Trumpville, or anything like that.
Also, I’m here if anyone wants to flame me for working out at OTF, masked. I can handle it.

I don't think that's a fair comparison. If OP's teacher came on the boards talking about going to a trump rally unmasked she would get flamed.
So I don't think people are saying it's no big deal, but as a parent who has to/chosen to send their child to school it's not realistic to pull your child from school every time you find out your child's teachers went to the gym unmasked or a protest or a wedding, etc.
At the same time if OP choose's to pull her child then I wouldn't blame her if she doesn't comfortable.
Hi! I wear a mask to OTF and never said I didn't. Just making sure you understand the actual comparison being made.

I have no idea why you are quoting me as I said nothing about you in my post. As I said, if OP's teacher came here talking about going to a trump rally unmasked she would get flamed. And I also said if my friend who is a teacher told me that they were working out in a small gym I'd also tell them that's not a good idea right now. I wasn't talking about you, nor did I mention you.
