8 days left, I think it's time to make these election news/chat threads daily threads.
Here's a piece about how SCOTUS is ruling on emergency election-related cases so far. The main takeaway - they're not sharing reasons why they're deciding one way or the other.

More people have already voted early so far (58.6 million) with 8 days to go than voted early or absentee in the entire early voting period of 2016 (58 million).
Lots more statistics regarding party affiliation, first-time/infrequent voters, etc. in the article below.
I know the expectation is that R voters will turn out in droves on Election Day. But man, given all the uncertainties of life right now I feel like it's too much to just assume you'll be available that day. What if these voters get exposed and need to quarantine? What if they get sick? What if a natural disaster impacts Election Day in their area? Admittedly, my DH didn't get why I needed to go vote immediately on Saturday (first day of early voting) until I reminded him that he just ended his quarantine period due to exposure and what happens if he gets exposed again at work this week and has to quarantine again? So then he went to go vote lol.
We have plans to vote on the day of. But now reading your post Velar I am worried Neither of us are out of the house much and @@@@@ DD is pretty locked down so I hope we'll be ok.

You're assuming that voters that are waiting until election day care about others/quartining for exposure/etc. Sure, some of them will care. But given the state of the country, covid "is a hoax", and "MY FREEDOMS!" people, and given that generally those people are trump supporters, I think the one thing I feel safe assuming is that they will go vote on November 3 regardless.
I really hope I'm wrong. Really. But given how many people seem to not care in general day to day things, I bet being sick or exposed or whatever won't stop them.
Anybody want to summarize the 60 min shitshow debacle? I can't stomach listening to his lies today.
Same old, same old. He refuses to give real answers to anything. He couldn't lead her down the path that the Bidens' had done anything wrong. So he threw a temper tantrum and left. Then they gave her that big book saying it contained his health care plan. It did not.

It really wasn't anything you haven't heard before. He said Lesley Stahl was being unfair, she was mischaracterizing things he's said, insisting he's the greatest, they never ask Joe Biden hard questions, etc. There was a break in the questioning by the 60 Minutes producer and Trump just said "I think you've got enough, thanks" and walked away, it wasn't a big fit or anything. She did mention that the giant book they gave her had executive orders and stuff in it, but no comprehensive health care plan which, again, not a surprise. (But not a blank book either). And then Pence was all, "The President is a man who speaks his mind blah blah blah excuses".

I think you're fine. I'm going into my office tomorrow, Wednesday and next Monday so and DH goes into work 4 out of 5 days a week, and @@@the kids go to school in the school buildings@@@. If everyone was basically home every day and not really lingering anywhere or socializing this week, chances are you'll be fine. But there's also the whole natural disaster thing too if you're in an area that might be impacted by wildfires, hurricanes, etc.
Ugh, my ZIP seems to have the largest gap between Trump vs. Biden donations in the whole borough - $144k for Trump, $36k for Biden.
I have a tiny zip, and I am happy to report its blue on the first and last map. Its interesting seeing the rural areas not nearly as red as I thought. Or I should say, haven't donated as much money.
I really encourage folks to vote early if they can. I mean I am not encouraging republicans to do that but, lol.
The risks of getting exposed and quarantined are very real. Don't take that risk if you are in situations where you could get exposed! But if you are holed up at home and not exposed to others, totally fine to wait.
My husband and I voted yesterday. this sounds like a cliche, but I got a little emotional standing in the booth filling out my ballot. The polling location was crowded (but well organized and ran smoothly)and there was a palpable excitement among the voters. I felt hopeful for the first time in a long time. I hope it pays off.

Agreed. I looked up my home zip and it was much lighter red than I expected. $25k to Trump vs. about $16k to Biden. # of donors is fairly even.

That NYT article is very interesting! Not surprisingly our zip code went $525,593 for Biden; $15,992 for Trump.
Very happy to say our county election website shows my ballot as received and counted. 😊 In Washington 38% of eligible voters have already turned in their ballots. They're being turned in at more than twice the rate of 2016.

I'm encouraging early voting, but I also think all the early voting will make election day run more smoothly. There will be many, many more polling places and with so many people having already voted hopefully the demand on election day won't tax the system so much. When we voted we spent 90% of the time outside and socially distanced from others in line, which made me feel like it was a low risk activity. I decided that the risk of making a mistake on an absentee ballot out weighed my risk from waiting in line.

There was a Trump rally here this weekend ans I was shocked by the huge turn out. I was wondering if I was living in some weird bubble thinking all my local friends were Biden supporters. There were rumors that a bunch of the attendees came in from other cities and were kind of touring So Cal Trump rallies. I was happy to see that dollars wise, donations local to Biden were 4 times what they were to Trump.

This. We didn't plan on having to quarantine, but here I am, waiting at the clinic for them to call me in to chat with a doc so I can get tested. DH was exposed last week, we found out late on Friday, and he got his test on Saturday. My employer's Occ Health folks have encouraged me to get checked out (and get a test), so here I am...
I was in the office all last week. I was damn good at masking, even though I was surrounded by folks that only grudgingly complied with the mask requirements (and often only when someone sufficiently senior was around...). The one coworker I sat nearest arrived at work this morning and was told to pack up and work from home until further notice. (I have also sent him a message to let him know the situation.)

This was maybe the most ridiculous part. He was generally an asshole - cutting her off, lying and being a jerk when she asked for evidence. You know, typical Trump.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
Another reason to vote early is that there MAY be a higher percentage of people at the polls on Election Day who really should be quarantined but are going to the polls anyway, so there might be a slightly elevated risk of exposure.
Seriously, if you CAN vote early, I think it’s a great idea to do so. This is not the year to get nostalgic about going to the polls on Election Day, it’s the year to make sure YOUR VOTE COUNTS.
On that note, I checked the status of my and H’s mail-in ballots and they are showing “counted” (we are in FL so they are allowed to begin counting early). I’m relieved.

This is giving me hives - go vote now! What if you have car trouble or get in a fender bender? What if you trip and break your ankle and spend all day at the doctor? Eat bad chicken and can’t get off the toilet? It’s 2020 - so many things can go wrong!

I'm shocked. Where I grew up is showing Biden ahead by a lot. Very different to 2016, I'd imagine (I'm in a red area traditionally). Nearby, quite red or slightly red.
