I'd love to see your storage ideas and share mine. Previously, I'd been super excited about a Dreambox www.createroom.com but I just don't have the room for it in my office. I need a desk for my computer and monitors, and it just didn't work! I ended up getting the 5x5 Kallax from IKEA and 12 box inserts. It fit perfectly in my closet, and I affixed it to the wall for sturdiness. It's great! I have boxes for all my tools and supplies, and still enough empty space to put my sewing box, or small drawer units for tiny things. The cubes even fit a standard file box.
When I can figure out how to add photos, I'll add them.
You should have seen my craft room in my last house. It was an abomination! I lived in that house for 10 years and I never cleaned it up to a state where I could actually use it as intended. The only reason I have this is because I moved into a clean, and empty house.
I'm trying to start organized and hopefully stay organized.

I have a large bedroom that by default became my craft room. It's packed. The biggest problem is that i need more shelves and boxes.yat wpuld go a long way towards getting organized. But that requires me to spend money on something that isn't fabric or soapmaki.g supies
I’m going to be honest here and show pictures from right this minute.
I have a 4x4 Kallax. It contains the majority of my stuff that I use all the time. Books and patterns are in file folder boxes and yarn is in baskets. I have some larger cuts of fabric wrapped on comic book boards but since I’ve mostly been sewing my stash the past two years that system has fallen apart. My serger is in there as well as some in progress projects in cardboard boxes so it’s all stored together. On top is a whole bunch of my daughter’s crafting supplies that I have placed out of reach because she cannot be trusted with glitter.
I have a small walk in closet where I have large cuts of quilt backing fabric and garment fabric that I should really get rid of in Rubbermaid containers. I also have a plastic 10 drawer organizer that contains all my quilting scraps organized by colour. A bunch of the bags in there are for gift bags and wrapping. I also have an Afghan quantity of yarn in two plastic bags that I haven’t worked on in 6 years. I should get rid of it as well. Obviously there is quilt batting up top, and a few in progress projects cast about wantonly, as well as DH’s dress shirts for mending.
I used to have a nicely organize craft room. When I had <5 crafts. Now I need a craft wing with an attached, air conditioned, craft garage.
And DD's virtual art teacher still manages to find supplies I don't have. Did you know regular gift wrap tissue- even cheap stuff from Target- doesn't bleed color when wet anymore? Nope, that's "art tissue" now. Thanks universe, that's just what I really, really needed- another way to dye things.
I have a 5x5 kallax unit for fabric and paper storage. My tool box has vinyl and sewing notions. My machine sits here unless i am quilting then it moves to my cutting table. I keep my pressing board set up when working on quilt blocks.
My cutting table is a 3’ x 6’ and sits on a 2x4 kallax on blocks so it is counter height.
I hate to admit this, but I am showing this thread to my H who thinks my craft room is an abomination. He tried to clean it for me, and then I went to sew and made him come up and fix it. Who puts an iron in a bookcase?!
In August I did a purge and organize process for my sewing room but didn’t add a cohesive uniform system of organization. Here it is in the pic below.
Top of shelves has sentimental stuff that doesn’t go anywhere in the house, a wig head that was my grandma’s, my dad’s cowboy hat, etc.
Shelf one, left, has some scrapbooking paper boxes, and then tag blanket fabrics and ribbons in the black boxes.
Shelf two, left, has all my scraps from projects, organized by color or fabric theme like animals, Paris, etc.
Shelf three has canvas cubes we recently purged toys from and holds projects I would like to be working on right now.
Shelf four has a bin with paints and colored pencils, drawing paper, some paint canvases, etc. and next to it is a t-shirt silk screen box.
Shelf one, right, has a with sewing supplies like shears, scissors, seam rippers, quilt pins, binding clips, etc, some instructional books, and a box of my daughter’s sewing stuff. Also a bobbin winder, Easy Binding Winder, and instruction/pattern books.
Shelves two and three have soft storage, zipped, clear front with projects and kits or large stashes of fabric. Shelf three also holds my and my daughter’s sewing machines when not in use.
Shelf four has some text books from school I still glance at now and then but have not place for, and is where is store my sewing machine wheeled case.
I have a triangle system in my sewing room like a kitchen, lol. I have my sewing table against the window, then the shelves, then a desk that has adjustable heights that I use as a cutting table. The ironing board gets set up as needed.
I can't figure out how to post pictures here anymore (used to use photobucket but now they charge for storage) but my sewing craft area looks like a bomb went off. It doesn't help that it is just tucked into a corner of our playroom behind the couch, with 2 baby gates to keep E2 out. I want my own office/craft room at my next house, lol.
I hate to admit this, but I am showing this thread to my H who thinks my craft room is an abomination. He tried to clean it for me, and then I went to sew and made him come up and fix it. Who puts an iron in a bookcase?!
My H would do that. He can't stand to have anything that looks out of place. So he would put the iron "up" so that it would be tidier. Half the time he puts stuff up and I can't ever find it when I need it because it doesn't make sense where he put it. His need for tidiness does not mesh well with my currently undermedicated ADHD, lol.

Can i hijack this thread for some help? I'm going to turn what I've dubbed the "Harry Potter closet"(under the steps) into my yarn storage. Has anyone done this? I think one thing I want to do is get a fold down table for it to wind yarn on, either on the door or a wall. Any suggestions?
At our previous house we opened up the under stairs space to the side and boxed in a large three shelf opening with white mdf and trimmed it out nicely. We used it as afghan and quilt storage. I know that I wouldn’t have wanted to go into the under the stairs space to spin yarn. It would be too small at my previous house, but we also had our water entry and meter under there so it wasn’t a great spot. I would rather do that at a desk or counter or table. My ball winder and swift only come out about once a month though so it’s not a big deal for me.
Thinking this through, if you have access from the side (or can make access from the side) I would totally install a set of drawers in the wall. So that you can store stuff deep and still get access to it.
