I am in Indiana, so youth sports are generally a go and mostly back to normal.
DD1 is in the middle of her swim season. We haven't had very many meets, but she has seen some great progress in the ones she has had. We do have our first real invite this weekend, a 3 day meet where she can swim 8 events, so this should be a good one. Championship season is just around the corner, and we still have no idea what it will look like. We're expecting smaller regional meets, with a virtual aspect to place the winners.
DD2 had her very first gymnastics meet a few weeks back! She is in the non sanctioned team group for now (they moved a few girls up after try outs, so they won't be sanctioned until next season). They were told 2 weeks before the meet that they were going to compete, so they didn't have much time AT ALL to learn those routines. I think 4 practices total? She was very happy with her scores and how she placed, and is really looking forward to the next one.
DD3 just does gymnastics classes once a week and loves it.
Dd1 is in the middle of travel basketball season. There’s no town rec anywhere this year because we rely on the school gyms for rec. Travel plays at a local sports complex. Masks required. She’s enjoying herself, but the kid has no hustle. If she keeps playing the way she has, there’s no way she will make a travel team next year. She had 2 games each weekend and one practice midweek.
DD2 had a soccer practice this weekend for the first time since November. It’s outside, and it’s supposed to be around 35° 🥶. But she’s very excited and ready to play. Her regular practices start at the end of the month. They’re indoor, but it’s 2 full-size turf fields under a bubble with no spectators allowed. So... feels almost like outside. Her spring season officially starts in March. They’ve already announced an out-of-state tournament, which we will likely not attend.
DD1 is still doing boxing once a week. She seems to love it.
No indoor sports are allowed here. We've been shut down since before Thanksgiving. You can play outdoor sports but all pools are closed indoor and outdoor. High school basketball has taken to practicing outside in the rain masked up...
madringal, DD got her full bar routine without a spot the Friday before shut down. Head coach was so excited and was going to start looking for a meet so she could compete and move out of level 3. None of that has happened and with this long of a break we will probably be back at square one. I'm thinking about contacting the lady she was doing privates with and asking if she would be comfortable doing some at home privates. It won't be anything like they do at the gym but maybe it will give her a slight leg up whenever we can go back.
186momx, That stinks. I know with swim there is so much pressure to get pool time when the pools were closed. Being out of the water for even two weeks can set a swimmer back MONTHS of work. It helps to know that they are all in the same boat. So while she may regress a little in her progress, so will the rest of the kids in the area. Fingers crossed you guys open up again soon!
My older kids are obsessed with skateboarding. In addition to all their skatepark/skate camp time, they started lessons at a different skatepark last week. I can already see progress after the one lesson. They actually learned some new stuff rather than just hanging out at the skatepark and doing the same stuff they normally do. DS1 will challenge himself to do new things, but DD will set goals to do new things and then not actually try them/do anything to learn them without the lessons. I figure if they're going to spend so much time skateboarding, it's more fun if they can do more stuff, and have someone teach them to do it as safely as possible.
DD is supposed to start softball for the first time and DS1 is supposed to start baseball (first year it's not t-ball) next month. It's highly unlikely they'll be able to play real games against other teams given our rules, but hopefully they'll just have fun practicing with their teams.
madringal, yeah it is bad. The entire state won't be able to send anyone to regionals or nationals you have to have a qualify at the state meet which we can't have. We have two girls level 10 who are high school seniors who should have qualified for nationals and their entire season and 16+ years of gymnastics totally gutted from them. Oregon Gymnastics, USA Gymnastics, and all the local clubs are talking with the governor, health department, etc. trying to get them to let us open back up. No contact, big open space, limited people, follow all the rules that the colleges are that are practicing and competing.
DD's ice-skating has been shut down since before Thanksgiving and there's no end in site. Our SAH order expires today and will likely be extended (if they haven't announced it already.)
DS is still doing soccer. I mean, as much as you can call no-contact, no-scrimmage, drills only for 4 year olds soccer, anyways?
We’re in the south, so my DS (8) is trying out baseball this spring, and evaluations are at the end of January. My DD(11) starts spring soccer at the end of Jan/beginning of February.
My girls are both swimming. My oldest has her first dual virtual meet next weekend. No spectators, one age group at time, etc. She is super excited as this will be her first official times since last February. My youngest is learning fly and breast on the pre-team. I’ve been happy with the precautions. I am concerned that our facility will not be able to remain open due to the financial strain from not having as many members, no meet revenue, decreased swim school, no rentals to high school teams, and so on.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
I take kids to all sports with occasional support from DH. This weekend DD1 had 2 games and DD2 had a practice. So I ask DH which one he wants to do (because it’s the weekend and I shall not do all thinks while he sits on the couch). He says DD2 soccer. Fine.
So today DD1 has basketball at 10, DD2 soccer at 12. I remind DH for the 100th time that DD2 has soccer at noon, and that she needs to get ready. Which means I have to find all gear, lay it out, explain order of putting gear on to BOTH DH and DD2, pack remaining items in bag.
So I rush to DD1s basketball and I’m running the clock and scoreboard for the game. DD2 is texting me every 5 seconds because DH can’t answer any questions and I’m screwing the clock up. Get home, DH has no idea that DD2 has been texting me, DD2 is not ready for soccer, soccer starts in 20 mins.
But I’m the b!tch because no one can function in the house.
A very exciting basketball weekend for DD1! She had 2 great games this weekend. Yesterday they beat their town rivals, and today they beat a team that killed them by 15 points last weekend. Both coaches were reprimanded for unsportsmanlike conduct, and our coach had a technical called on him. To be fair, the ref was around 80 and had no business being on the court. But the girls found it all very exciting.
We have had a great Jan for swim. DD1 has just been killing it lately. Lots of time drops and she’s just looking strong! This weekend she picked up two new divisional cuts in a stroke she never even swims, so that are her feel pretty good.
We just got the best news. The governor changed the extreme risk category to allow gyms to open up...kind of. 500sqft must be available and only 5 patrons to 1 staff member. But DD's coach just emailed saying that hopefully the park district will allow the girls will start up modified practices next week.
Our sports are still pretty shut down here. DS has done his soccer practice, but at this point, DS has no idea what a soccer game is (they can only do drills) and I have no idea how he’s doing since I can’t watch.)
So she's playing on a club team that is leaps and bounds beyond the town rec teams. These kids are 7 years old and destroying teams that are made up of 9 year olds. And she's on the B team. These kids have amazing talent. DD2 has a strong love of soccer and pretty decent speed, but her handling skills aren't great. She's behind when compared with the rest of her team.
I reached out to the girls' director, who has been coaching her since the end of the fall season - so probably 5-6 practices and a game - because they let her fall coach go. Her new coach hasn't started yet, but she has been coaching my 17 year old soccer superstar niece for years, and I've heard wonderful things. Anyway, I asked him if I should send her to their clinic - and I meant in addition to the club practices and futsal - just to try to get her some extra time.
He came back and has all but recommended that I pull her off her team. She could either go to the C team or just go into the clinic and have futsal. He says that if she stays where she is, she might not make the team next year.
DD2 is none the wiser. She thinks everything is awesome. One of her very good friends is on the C team, so moving her wouldn't be a huge deal I don't think. The clinic would be a waste of time if she wasn't getting the team workout. But I really wanted to see if this new coach could make a few things click with her.
If she doesn't make the team next year, she will be crushed. I want to give her every opportunity to improve and gain more confidence on the field. I'm not looking at this as driving toward a college scholarship or whatever - she just loves the game and I want her to play as much and as long as she can - because she's that kind of kid.
