I'm a bit late - I knit a bunch of socks in 2018. I used 9" circulars (those made it so easy to me), I learned the Fish Kiss Lips heel, and also turned that into a toe. So I did a FKL toe and heel. I knit toe up. I had learned German short rows, too, but preferred the FKL heel.
ETA: I'm an advanced crocheter and moderate knitter.
This was really fun to see them come together. I made a few mistakes (you can see one of them right at the corner of the heel...dropped half my stitch, had to fish it back up, failed to do so without makign a mess of it, but was getting exasperated and decided to just keep going. Ended up with a weird bleb of yarn where I'd twisted something or something, but eh), but nothing worth ripping back I think. Once I get some distance from the heel I'm curious to get a better look at how the tension came out. I was trying to learn how to purl continental but couldn't get the hang of it, had to throw my purl rows while picking my knit rows, and the twin stitches seemed really hard to regulate and were really loose, so I wasn't consistent at all.
But they fit on my foot in a footish shape with no random baggy bits or giant holes, so on to the calf!

Amazing! I just figured out I only have 29 more rows to go on my shawl that never ends so I am excited to move onto my own socks. I’ve got fancy striped wool and everything.
Holy schnikes ribbing is annoying to knit. I can't find a rhythm for it at all with all the flopping back and forth of the yarn. And I still can't figure out purling continental at all.
I had originally wanted to do most of the calf of this sock ribbed because it's a comfy around the house type sock and I dunno...that felt like a comfy around the house sock kind of thing, but f that noise. I've done 3 rounds and I'm ripping it back out and just doing a thin band of ribbing at the top because this will take me all year at this rate.

Any tips??
Ribbing is the devil. But the more you do the better your sock will stay up. I'll see if i can find a youtube video of purling continental, or I'll film one myself after I get home from work today (won't be til late tonight tho). You can also look up yhe Norwegian purl, or knitting Peruvian method.
It does involve alternating rows of stockingette and a 1:4 rib pattern but it goes together quickly.
Or you could just do plain stockingette until you reached the point you want to do the ribbed cuff.
Or you could do a bigger rib pattern. I don’t know how many stitches you have but I like a 2p:6k rib because then it’s easy when you get to the cuff to do 2p:2k rib. Or maybe just place a couple of ribs like the pattern Tracks: (One of the first sock patterns I ever did)

I've watched a few videos, and then I try it and my fingers say, "WUT? NO." I have yet to find the magic video that makes it all clear, so if you want to film yours that would be awesome. But I just watched a few on Norwegian and that makes SO MUCH MORE SENSE to my crochet brain than all the other yarn manipulation ive seen in other videos. Im gonna try that next!
I should pull out a random ball of yarn and just practice so I don't mess up my socks. Maybe then it'll click.

NORWEGIAN PURL FTW! This totally makes sense to my fingers *and* my brain. Than you for the idea. I'd seen peruvian, but I've never run across norwegian before.
