Happy Friday! What have you been reading this past week?
QOTW: Would you rather have a job involving books (as an author, a publisher, literary agent etc.) or would you rather keep your current career/job? (Assuming both jobs pay the same, same level of commute, same level of job security, and you would magically have the same level of competency at both jobs)?
I just finished One by One by Ruth Ware, which was ... fine. I don’t have much success with her books, so I should probably just accept they’re not my style of mystery. Now reading Solution and Other Problems by Allie Brosch, which so far is hilarious.
QOTW: I teach English, so I definitely do work with books, but I’d love to jump over to book publishing if I could. I had some leads in that I could have pursued when I was first out of college and job hunting, but I took a different route. Ahhh, hindsight.
I am currently reading Three Woman by Lisa Thaddeo, another book from the "best books of 2020 thread." It is beautifully written and devastating. Her eye for detail is exacting, and the way she tells each woman's story without flinching is unforgiving but also mesmerizing. I am only about 1/3 of the way in, but so far I really "like" it, as much as you can "like" a book like this.
Strangely enough, I think I'd keep my current job/profession. As much as I love books and reading, I like what I currently do and have no interest in working in that field.
I've been reading Confessions on the 7:45. It's fine. I'll finish it tonight.
QOTW: I'm a SAHM so yeah, I'd love to have a job in the publishing industry. I'm guessing that if I had a job outside the home I'd trade it for a job in the publishing industry too.
I have so many holds from the library cropping up at the same time, hopefully I can make a dent in things in the next few weeks. Currently reading The Trespasser by Tana French, listening to Nothing More Dangerous by Allen Eskens but may need to switchover to the Guest List because it just came in. Also have the Glass Hotel in hard copy and audio, but will probably read it, the intro was confusing on audio.
QOTW: I would hope I wouldn’t hate reading for pleasure if I worked in books. I would love to be a librarian. But overall, I think I’ll keep my current job and enjoy reading for pleasure
I read three books and they were totally different, but each really good, and I’d recommend them.
Hidden Valley Road - Inside the Mind of an American Family - Robert Kolker (Details the research into schizophrenia while telling the stories of a Colorado family with six family members who have/had it) Solutions and Other Problems - Allie Brosh (comics that are about both tiny random things, and big, profound things) The Secret Lives of Church Ladies - Deesha Philyaw (Nine engrossing short stories about Black women and desires/relationships.)
QOTW: I don’t have a paid job now but am a very part time volunteer for some library stuff, and I’d keep it that way.
I'm reading Last Train to Key West. It's fine, I don't think I'm far enough in to really connect with the characters. I used to live in South Florida and went to college at one of Henry Flagler's old hotels so I've been looking forward to this one for a while.
I'm also on my third loan of Obama's book on audio. Really hoping to finish it this time!
QOTW: I would change jobs if it meant I got to be a travel writer but other than that I'll keep my current job
I’ve already published a few books so my wish is for my agent to sell my latest proposal even though she says it is too “niche” so I can write a book I’m excited about.
I read The Push and am now reading Happiness for Beginners.
QOTW: I am a SAHM. One of my favorite activities pre-Covid was volunteering at the library at DD's school. Working in a library or book store would be amazing.
I finished A Woman of No Importance. It was good, but it felt so much longer than 300 and some pages. I'm currently reading Scott Turow's The Last Trial.
QOTW: I would stay in my current profession because I have no interest in those professions

I finished "Something She's Not Telling Us" and it's a light 3*'s. Too choppy of a story, and terrible ending... I just picked up "Firefly Lane" yesterday as I read it's going to be a Netflix series.
QOTW: Hmm, I love books, but I think I'd keep my current job. While "Younger" probably isn't totally accurate, the amount of pressure on them to read, read, read and pick the best selling books would stress me out.
Still trying to get through The Final Hour by Brittney Sahin. It's book 5, in what should have been a 3 book series, lol. This series and another one of hers have gotten too long and are giving 3rd tier characters their own book. So while I loved let's say the first 3 books in the series, by book 4, the original characters that made the series aren't in it enough and the books can't stand alone.
QOTW: I would love to just read and edit books. The editing for many years is terrible.
