President-elect Joe Biden has tapped Pennsylvania Health Secretary Rachel Levine to be his assistant secretary of health, leaving her poised to become the first openly transgender federal official to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
I will speak on behalf of Pennsylvanians (the non-Trumpers) - she will be missed here, but she totally deserves this. I hope it's the start of even greater things for her.
Does anyone here have any idea what the actual punishment will be for the criminals that entered the Capitol and did all kinds of destruction? Are we talking prison time or slaps on the wrist with only probation?
This has been weighing heavy on my mind. I really want to know how severely those fuckers will be punished.
From what I've read, based on the charges that have been brought so far, they're looking at prison sentences of between 1-20 yrs, depending on the specific charge.
I was wondering about the woman arrested today(?) who may have stolen Pelosi's laptop and allegedly tried to sell it to Russian intelligence. *If* that ends up being what investigators uncover (not sure if this is just Twitter allegations)...wouldn't something like that be a life sentence or closer to it?

I heard Tiger King may be on the pardon list yesterday. That’s not verified, but I feel like it would be a fine way to top off the shit show of a last year.
@our School District Superintendent is leaving her position to serve under the administration. Selfishly I’m sad to be losing her, especially during this pandemic, but I’m glad she could help implement a lot of amazing things across the country.

Our local college radio station is killing it this morning with their music choices for Trump's last day. If any Seattle area people are near a radio and need a pick me up - tune in to KEXP (and I learned today that you can play it through Alexa!).
ON MSNBC last night several people said that he's not required to make pardons public, so he might be pardoning some people (like family, himself) and we would never know unless it was tested in court.
How is that legal? Surely there are court documents or some record of it. That’s so obscure!!
They don't have to issue a press release, but yes Trump will have to sign something that will go into DOJ records. I am sure any that are high-profile or alarming will come out.

Hi fellow San Diegan!
@@ I know she’s not so popular with some people wrt her handling of Covid. I don’t understand why she’s so opposed to re-opening even under Newsom’s plan.

as a fellow pennsylvanian i'd like to add a reminder to NEVER READ THE COMMENTS.

I love KEXP! I have watched/listened to a lot of my favorite bands in studio performances on their website. Good stuff.

Nope. Pardon power is very vague—a pardon does not have to take any particular form, it just has to be verifiable. He could hand write a pardon and have it witnessed by a loyal aid who is still working. Javanka could lock the paper away in a safe deposit box and never let it be known that they have it until they need it. They could actually keep it quiet all the way through a trial. If they are found innocent, nobody is the wiser. If they are found guilty, all of a sudden, out comes the pardon.
I am on such a high today. I've been listening to Lizzo on repeat. Nothing* can bring me down.
*except for the anxiety about the potential amount of chaos that can be wrought in one day, the knowledge that millions of people are still down for this fool, and the fear that Biden has so much on his plate to do so quickly and was totally hobbled during the transition so is possibly set up with high expectations that he can't possibly meet.
I don't know if we have talked about this junk but it is like throwing gas on a flaming fire. It's just infuriating that a report like this was released by our own government.

I was shocked and disappointed to see some of them. One I saw yesterday was for entering capitol unauthorized with lethal weapon - max of 11.5 mos 😱😱😱

I inadvertently clicked on the comments of a Twitter post about her nomination, and the responses were overwhelmingly “good for her!” And yes, there were a few negative comments but *every single one* said something along the lines of “I don’t like how she handled the COVID crisis” or “she could have done a better job.” Every single one was job performance-based.

Apparently there is no legal requirement to publicize pardons. Yes, there are court documents, but no requirement that the documents are available to the general public or need to be reported in the news. As I said, if it was tested in court, then the documents would probably be presented and that's how we would find out.

Historians responded with dismay and anger Monday after the White House’s “1776 Commission” released a report that it said would help Americans better understand the nation’s history by “restoring patriotic education.” “It’s a hack job. It’s not a work of history,” American Historical Association executive director James Grossman told The Washington Post. “It’s a work of contentious politics designed to stoke culture wars.”
