Guys the President is speaking right now on COVID. And he is quoting science and statistics and talking about the racial disparities in treatment. I wish I could hug this man

ETA: And he has a plan!

Why does he use a different pen for each one?
So he can present the pens as gifts to people he wants to thank or recognize for their work.
This thread is only 2 pages and it's already noon. That's telling.
Eh, we've been very inconsistent lately. For much of 2020 we'd have a single political thread a week and it would only reach a few pages. Of course some days big things happened and then we'd show up en masse.

Ok I have a dumb question but you ladies are super smart and might know the answer: Why is Biden using a new pen for every EO he is signing? Super inconsequential but I need to know lol.
ETA: I see this was asked and answered!! I feel better knowing others were curious as well!

See above. It's traditional to have use a bunch of pens for keepsakes, etc. "This pen was used to sign xyz!"
I don’t know if it’s the whole “glass of water in a parched desert” issue, but Biden seems to be really killing it as President. I know it’s only been a day. I hope his team keeps this momentum and enthusiasm the full 4 years. They all seem so dedicated and competent.
Will this happen? How confident do you feel this will happen?!!
One of the podcasts I listened to the other day was discussing what things Biden could get through with reconciliation (need only 50 votes) vs the regular process (need 60 votes to end a filibuster). Basically, for things involving taxation and spending, they can argue reconciliation.
DC statehood was the first example they gave of things that probably couldn't be done under reconciliation. The podcasters made it sound pretty unlikely to pass unless we get rid of the filibuster.

Vogue has an article on First Lady fashion for Inauguration Days throughout history. I saw it mentioned in a Yahoo article about Dr. Biden’s corsage because they mention that Betty Ford and Mamie Eisenhower also wore corsages. They don’t say where or from whom Dr. Biden got hers.
It's not super close to the White House, is on the Naval Observatory complex, and is in a fairly residential area, at the end of Embassy Row. It also has the master clock for the US.
I should probably be more ashamed about the fact that I only remember this is because of Veep and John Oliver's Marlon Bundo book, shouldn't I? (I mean, I'm sure I learned it at some point, but it sticks in my brain for those two reasons.)
I never thought about it until the whole SS bathroom post the other day. I think when I was a kid I thought they lived in the White House or on the grounds, but from a security threat perspective it makes sense to have them sleep in separate secure facilities.
The bulk of these actions will come on Thursday, Biden’s second day in office. He’ll leverage the Defense Production Act to try to make more vaccines, tests, and protective equipment such as masks. He’ll establish a pandemic testing board in order to expand testing supplies, access, and the public health workforce. He’ll provide guidance to help schools and businesses reopen safely. He’s directing the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) to start establishing community vaccination centers. And that’s just for starters.
I feel like we will be getting news like this for a while. Nothing they said was even close to true.
I don't have articles or anything, but when the wall project was announced, I remember contractors and steel fabricators, etc weighing in on the actual cost of the wall and the time it would actually take to complete, and both were way off what 45 said at the time.
I also wonder how much will have to be paid out for contracts that are broken.
In my experience with federal construction contracts, they’ll get paid for the work they’ve done to date and maybe there’s a clause for a little extra. This would include overhead costs for the company, general conditions (these may be a set small % of total amount owed), engineering design, etc. On the construction side, they don’t typically get paid until materials are on site or work is verified as complete, on a monthly basis. They’ll save so much $$$ by cancelling the contracts, although it doesn’t happen very often in that world. I suppose the dumpster fire admin could have done something different with the contracts, but even if a federal contractor was contractually allowed to keep money they hadn’t earned yet, they likely wouldn’t because it could impact their ability to get more federal work in the future.

“U.S. Senators Ben Cardin (D-Md.) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) announced Thursday that the first bipartisan legislation they will introduce for the 117th Congress is their joint resolution to remove the deadline to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. Ratification of the ERA would expressly prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex in the U.S. Constitution. In the House of Representatives, the resolution is being introduced by Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) and Congressman Tom Reed (R-N.Y.).”
I want this so bad. So, so bad.
Also: the Ordinary Equality pod was a great basic explainer on the ERA.
For those who can't see Tweets, it says "Senator Sanders says of his inauguration photo/meme that he’s glad it “makes people aware that we make good mittens in Vermont... we have some good coats as well.”"
We’re all in agreement that President Joe is putting that button back on the desk, right? He’s getting ice cream when he presses it. Right?
😂😂😂
I’d get coffee. All the coffee. Maybe I’ll see if I can buy one that just lights up or makes noise to tell H I want coffee. I know I could get it myself, but it would be hilarious
