Just as an FYI I am allergic to formaldehyde (and DMDM Hydantoin as well) and it is in the vast majority of shampoos. I honestly struggle to find shampoos that don’t contain some formaldehyde type preservative. Generally, the quantity in the product would be so low as to have negligible or no effect on a person. A good friend worked for Health Canada doing studies on chemical components in cosmetics and absolutely ALL of it is bad for you or causes cancer etc, but is considered safe at very low levels for topical applications. So basically it all sucks.
For your information, Burts Bees, Head & Shoulders, Herbal Essences, Aussie, Aveeno and Pantene products are formaldehyde free. Paul Mitchell also seems to be ok. This is based on a safe product list from my dermatologist from a few years back, so you would have to check the label.
I use Aveeno everything pretty well since it is the safest and most easily accessible product line for me.
On the off chance it's not that shampoo, you might want to have your doctor prescribe an antifungal shampoo. I had this happen once and my hairdresser sold me some super expensive minty thing that did shit all. I went to my GP who prescribed an antifungal and that seemed to help a lot more. I also have very fine blonde hair.
I was wondering which shampoo you use. I have had also a recent issue with hair falling out but I think in my case it was directly related to the shampoo that I was using. I also turned 40 recently. I have sense changed my shampoos out and using more deep conditioners and I think it could be helping but it will be a few months before I can fully tell.
So I use Dove Moisturizing and one of the ingredients is the DMDM Hydantoin that they say causes hair loss. My hair has also been noticeable thinner. This is scary.

I found the law firm that's handling the class action lawsuit. I filled out their online form and sure enough, when I grabbed my bottle of shampoo it does in fact list the ingredient "DMDM hydantoin, which is known to leach formaldehyde when it comes into contact with water". Which... after Googling, has caused many women with long hair to effectively lost half the thickness of their ponytail.
I used to get away with wrapping my hair elastic around 2-3 times. Now I'm needing to wrap it around 4 times! 4!
I shower at night, and will immediately stop using this shampoo. This is so upsetting. The class action lawsuit is brand new. I'm so thankful you posted that link, because it may be MONTHS before this hits the news. And... the only thing on the news these days is politics.
Would you mind sharing the law firm with me (you can PM if you'd like). My Dove shampoo I've been using recently also uses this ingredient and I'm experiencing the same thing as you.

Another shampoo to try is Free and Clear Shampoo for Sensitive Skin. It's available at my target and walgreens. It is free of formaldehyde and preservatives.

I already received a 6am delivery from Whole Foods on my front steps. What did I order? Shampoo. I figure I can trust what they see to at least carry me through a few days until I can do my research on the MOST basic shampoo/conditioner to transition to. I bought Giovanni Tea Tree shampoo and conditioner for $6 a bottle.
I'm really devastated. My gut tells me it's the shampoo. As I wash about every other day now, I actually let the shampoo sit on my hair for a while in the shower, while I do things like shave. I've never done that before. So it hasn't just been an apply and quickly rinse situation.

Thanks for the recommendation! I'm going to check it out.

Thank you! I'm going to reach out to them about my Dove shampoo and see if there's any correlation. I'm going to stop using it ASAP and switch to Aveeno to see if that makes a difference at all.
mel It shakes you up a bit, right? Shampoo is one thing that I don't see as really having time to penetrate or make a big impact on your health or well-being.
Before DS (7) was born I spent a lot more of my time and money buying higher end shampoo and makeup. I didn't pay attention to ingredients, but I definitely threw more of my money at higher quality items. I really need to do my research now.
CloudBee here is the current list I have of all preservatives that break down into formaldehyde. If that’s something you really want to cut out of your life. DMDM hydantoin and Quaternium-15 are the most common that I come across.

There is a lot of info out there in regards to beauty products- make up, hair products, etc and how they negatively affect health. It’s definitely hard to wade through which things to take seriously and which aren’t. Many people just yell about products containing "ingredients." So to be honest I’ve just kind of ignored it all, ha. Probably not the best way to go, but it seems like everything is going to ruin our bodies these days so I’ve just kind of given up :/ But it’s nice if there are particular lists or products that have been linked to specific issues that are easy to avoid.
ETA: and I don’t always think it has to do with price points. There are expensive items that can be problematic as well.
Thank you! Are there any shampoos/conditioners you would recommend?
I struggle with dry scalp because of my allergies so I use Head & Shoulders and Aveeno products generally. I like Aveeno Honey Oat Milk shampoo and conditioner. It smells delicious. I have straight but thick hair.

For what it is worth, CloudBee, I defend against class actions. Just because they have alleged these things doesn't actually mean it happened. That happens a lot, actually. So cut yourself some slack for not knowing about this compound. It is totally possible that isn't the cause of your thinning or breakage.
Of course, some class actions are totally worthwhile and have a strong basis. But just filing one doesn't really mean anything.
FWIW, my hair has been thinning for a few years, and at least the current line of shampoo/conditioner I'm using doesn't seem to contain any of the bad ingredients listed, and my stylist the last couple of times I saw her last year said my hair is actually pretty healthy right now.
I think my problem is just my age (early 40s now) and genetics (my grandma on my moms side had VERY thin hair as she got older).
And for me it's definitely thinning to where I can see more of my scalp at my part, and not breakage. I also have less leg hair (so, bonus?). I've been taking biotin supplements for a few years and it's done wonders for my nails, but I haven't seen much of an effect on the hair on my head (it might grow faster, but it doesn't grow more).
Ugh, I feel like I have thinning hair as well, and I guess it's age related. I wondered if part of it was damage from heat but since I've been WFH I barely blow dry or even straighten my curls.
I assume some of the breakage is from pulling it back, but I cannot workout with my hair down.
Anyway, all that to say that I am glad it's not just me.
I take Biotin, but I'm not sure if it's helping my hair. I notice it more with my fingernails because they don't break as easily.
My hair has always been thin, fine and flyaway. I get my hair colored (I go darker) and that color definitely helps with the texture and is easier to manage. My hair gets easily damage from the heat of the hairdryer so I use a treatment to help protect the hair from breaking. There are actually 2 I use (Redken), alternating, but one is specifically for heat styling.

For scalp massaging, whether when I shampoo or use an oil treatment the night before, I love this cheap scalp massager. It’s rubbery, so not too rough.

Hair density decreases as we age. This is a normal process due to a reduced number of hairs in anagen and increasing number of hairs in telogen. Hormones also play a role.

I’m way late to the discussion but my sister went through this a year ago or so. She had done hormone testing, was using rogaine, had tried diet changes and nothing worked. She had to switch shampoo.
She switched to some all-natural shampoo and her hair started growing back in around 1 month later. 🤞🏻that it works for you too!
I’ve been struggling with this too the past year or two (38 now). I have always had very thick hair so this is pretty new for me. After washing my hair now each time quite a bit falls out. I don’t blow dry or straighten.
I had blood work done to check thyroid etc and it was fine. I tried using this olaplex stuff but didn’t notice a difference and it’s pricy. I think I’m going to stop having my hair highlighted and go back to being a brunette to see if it helps. I also have been taking biotin and was taking collagen (powder dissolved in water) for a while but it’s kinda icky so I stopped but might start again.
Very frustrating! I still have plenty of hair but the thin-ness of my ponytail when I pull it back now alarms me because I know it used to be a lot thicker, so I worry about the future.
