If, at some point in the near future, people flip the fuck out enough, can Britain rejoin the EU? Would there be another referendum? I guess I'm wondering if it's possible to attempt to reverse the damage.
Yes, it is possible. Unfortunately, what used to be the more left wing party, Labour, are not pushing in that direction, but my hope is that as more and more goes wrong, and as we get closer to an election (4 yr from now), that they will push for another referendum...and this time it will be done legally and well (aka, make it be 60+% have to vote yes, etc). Unfortunately, it's more likely that Scotland and N. Ireland will leave the UK before this which will remove a lot of the people who would have voted for the EU.
I was surprised by Brexit but I shouldn’t have been. In 2013 my sister married an English guy, in England, and at the reception her in laws were complaining about immigrants and how they ruin everything. YOUR SON LITERALLY JUST MARRIED AN IMMIGRANT! I’m sure they thought she was the “right kind” of immigrant, but the cognitive dissonance was astounding.
That kind go shitty dissonance was my late childhood (but in the US).
Once we moved to the US, there were so many people who would say something like that to my dad behind closed doors (Regan republicans in finance who assumed he was one of their own). He was adamant about never getting citizenship even though he had been in the US for more than 25 years when he died.
I have heard this my entire time in the US, when folks find out I am an immigrant. I tick all the "good immigrant" boxes for white supremecists. White, anglophone, with a vaguely Midwest accent, military spouse, technical education...
People often don't like it when I use my experience to point out flaws in the immigration system. Or try to gain empathy for folks who are having to jump thru those hoops.

Thanks for this explanation. It’s pretty unfortunate that there isn’t more hope for a return.

isabel, in talking to my husband and a few other people, our guess is that we'll be begging to come back in about 10 years. Sigh. Whether they will allow it, I'm not certain. I honestly would not let us back in after what idiocy our gov't has shown.

Even if the EU were to consider letter the UK back in, do you think they would do so without insisting they give the pound up for the euro? The UK really had a sweetheart deal (the advantages of being in the EU, but keeping its own currency and monetary policy). Of all the countries in the EU, the UK had the least reason to leave in lot of ways.
I don’t know what to do with the ppl that thought Brexit was gonna be nbd, tho. Like, this was all foreseeable if you thought about it for 5min
A big portion of the US believes the government is controlled by pedophilia, lizard people and baby eating rings. Trusting the British yellow menace (aka Boris) on Brexit seems almost sensible in comparison.
Really, a big portion of the UK believes some of this too. No surprise the tracks of late look somewhat similar.

acuore , correct, and that will keep us from joining because far too many people want the good stuff without compromise (which is part of the issue before Brexit). British exceptionalism is going to take a massive hit and the elites of this country are going to make mint off of it while getting their residency/citizenship in EU countries.
