I heard from a friend in a current trial that they are gearing up for the under 12 crowd trials. He’d chatted up the technician who let him know it was coming (and confirmed by news locally). Yay!
Hmmm. I would consider it if my kid was up for it, but there are no sites anywhere near me. I'm surprised-- I would have thought there would have been some in Philly/NY/NJ area.
After discussing with my 12 YO daughter, we signed her up last week. She's excited for the opportunity and I really hope she gets chosen! We happened to have her well visit this week and her pedi was all for it.

We registered DS (teen) for the 12-17 Moderna trial. We got a call but their first screening questions was weight- and his BMI was too low. You had to be ~56% BMI to qualify. So for those with kids on the thinner side, FYI you may not be able to participate. I am still hopeful that if a younger kids trial opens DD could participate, but she is also on the low BMI side so who knows. At our site (MN) they filled up all the teen slots with no issue and a big wait list, so I'm hopeful we'll get a younger children site here as well. And if there are Pfizer trials maybe they won't have the weight requirement.

Oh rats, I just checked. She's 49th percentile... so close!

Do you have a link for that? I couldn't find anything for under 12 yr olds.

my daughter’s BMI is way too low too then. It’s only like 26%. That’s a bummer.
My 5 year old thinks needles are no big thing and I'm sure she'd love to participate. She volunteered immediately for random testing at her school, even though she had a bad experience with a really intense deep swab in December. She would never meet BMI requirements though. IDK what her BMI is, but she has spent most of her life in single digit percentiles.

This was very word of mouth - and Austin specific, but I presume it applies to the other Moderna trials.

DS1, age 12, got accepted to the Moderna trial today. He is not 56%ile for BMI, he is under that, so still worth trying if that is the only thing holding you back.

This is just general advice and I have no inside info on the BMI thing, but as someone who is in a vaccine trial, if you're at all interested in signing your kid up, I'd just go ahead and do it to express your interest.
Trials evolve and the criteria changes and there might be different criteria for different arms for trials. So just because someone with a lower BMI didn't get accepted, it doesn't mean that'll be the case in your area or the case always.
I'm glad that I could give back to science by being a part of the trial and thank you to anyone else who has done the same or having your kids do the same...yay science!!

This is good to hear, my 13 year old is definitely lower than 56% BMI. Can you keep us updated on how it goes? They told me they would call me next week for an appointment and then he would still have to get accepted but I would love to hear your experience with it.

Will do. His first appt is 2 in 1 and will therefore be the longest at 4 hours. He will essentially get a physical. They will do blood draws at some or all appointments. He will go back 30 days after the 1st appt and then back again in 30 days. The 4th visit will be 7 months out.

That is so exciting!! I really hope my daughter gets the opportunity.

Did they say the trial is for 2 years? That's how long they are for adults.

It's one year. Looks like in addition to the in person visits we also do a few virtual visits, phone calls, and then there is an app we are to download for him to enter info into an ediary.

Yep, same for adults re: visits, phone calls and app. That's good that it's 1 year. Although I think for me after the 1 year there's only 1 visit at the 18 month point and then the 24 month point.
