Longtime MLB home run king Hank Aaron dies at 86 Hank Aaron, known for his sweet swing that carried him to 755 career home runs, which long stood as baseball's golden mark, has died. He was 86. HENRY
I feel terrible, but I really wouldn't have guessed he was still alive. I wouldn't have thought he was only 86! He was apparently only a few years younger than Mickey Mantle, who died in the 90s, and I remember DiMaggio passed away while I was in high school, although of course he was a lot older.
Also, since they just combined the Negro League stats with official MLB stats, apparently it increased his stats slightly. I'm glad he got to see that.
There’s a funny episode of Futurama where Aaron voices both himself (as one of the greatest baseball players of all time) and his own descendant in the year 3000, Hank Aaron XXIV (one of the worst players of all time). He was a really good sport and was quite funny in the episode.
I heard him speak at a conference (on the same stage as John Lewis and Bryan Stevenson - swoooooon) about his work in civil rights and it was life changing. I’m so sad to hear this.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
Our local news is doing a big piece on him tonight (he grew up in the big city an hour away). They said one year he received more mail than anyone else in the country. But most of it was hate mail. I just can’t imagine.
Apparently, he got his covid vaccine 2 weeks ago. One of the tabloid news shows with commercials during the nightly news (I’m old, OK!) was hyping that part up so much 🙄🙄
In 2014, Aaron said about racism: “We have moved in the right direction, and there have been improvements, but we still have a long ways to go in the country. The bigger difference is that back then they had hoods. Now they have neckties and starched shirts.”
