Did you see she came out today? Neither of my girls were into her or her bows but I am so, so happy for her. She alluded to it the other day with a Gaga song and a LBGTQ person I follow on Twitter was remarking she had come out but today’s post was amazing. She’s getting a ton of support - it took a lot of guts and it is going to be so impactful for younger kids. Another positive thing from this year!
But also I used to watch Dance Moms (I know, I know) and she's still like 6 years old in my head. I can't wrap my head around her being 17 now.
Same. She still acts like a little kid, though. Painfully naive and maybe a little dumb for her age LOL. I blame her terrible mother.
Yes. Her mother is the worst. You can tell most of her negative traits come right from her mom and then she was in the spotlight for the latter half of her youth. Hopefully she pulls it together at some point. She's still young even though I guess she's on the verge of "adulthood".

I can’t figure out if it’s legitimate immaturity/naivety or intentional - if she was a typical angsty and moody teen that wouldn’t bode well for her business model being a rainbows-and-sunshine celebrity for young kids.

I saw an interview with her maybe a year ago on the Today Show maybe, and it seemed like the little kid thing was just an act, part of her “brand”, and she was very aware that her viewers and their parents, as most of her market is very young, expected her to act a certain way.

Yes. And she's done more "de-masking" videos and spots where she's not the character. I think it's more an act at this point and as she gets older she'll lose it.
I hope the transition isn't too hard on her because she does seem like a good kid.
She’s a dancer who I guess sings too. She got famous on Dance Moms which is a terrible show so I’m not surprised most people don’t know her. She stayed popular with really young girls because she’s loud and colorful and likes flashy stuff. They called her Jojo with a bow bow because she always wore huge ass bows. She’s kinda of like Hannah Montana I think. LOL
Anyway—I’m going to go hide in a hole now because I have toddlers and shouldn’t know any of this. 😂

Yeah same I remember her from dance moms and can’t believe she’s 17. I wish her the best and I love that she is living in her truth and giving this example to younger kids.

I’m really glad to hear this because my first thought when I saw this was that I hope she is prepared for the hell and fury that is going to rain down upon her. Hopefully the bigots are drowned out by loving caring families and kiddos but when your “brand” is icon to children 5-13 this is a tricky road to navigate. Still a lot of hate out there. I hope she comes out the other side ok.
Yep googled, still no clue. Sounds like she’s popular among the kids! I’m always learning from this place
Consider yourself lucky. I had no clue she was on Dance Moms, but my kids watched a few of her youtube videos and I immediately banned her from the house. She's SO loud and obnoxious. I already have three loud and obnoxious people living in my house, I didn't need another! It was all very positive, but I just couldn't listen to it.
Now, all that to say, I am very happy for her and hope this doesn't negatively affect her or her brand. Fuckface in Chief may be gone, but his minions are still loud and proud and I hope any backlash she gets is minimal. And I hope that parents can learn from this on how to tell teach their kids about being gay. I hope she nonchalantly brings a girlfriend to an awards show and if a kid asks "who's that" a parent can just say, that's her girlfriend. No different than ::insert other annoying teen role model:: bringing her boyfriend to the show. BUT I also don't want her to feel pressured to do so for the optics. I'm rambling, no coffee yet.

A friend is friends with the mom IRL and I fell down a rabbit hole on her FB profile. Their house is like a unicorn had projectile rainbow vomit everywhere.

I have so many questions about all those dance moms and what was real versus fake on that show. I would love to "know" one of them so I could ask away. There was just so much going on with all of those families. I'm not surprised their house is unicorn-esque. LOL

This is really cool. I have been on the fence about her— I hate that her constant pushing of merch on kids, but her songs are pretty empowering. I was worried she was a low-key Trumper— nothing specific she said, but she seemed to be towing the line Taylor Swift was a couple of years ago (I know she has become more vocal) and she has always been super protective of her brand. So her openness about this makes me happy. I feel better that my kids love her now.
ksun, I saw a tour of that house and I think that is not where she really lives. I think it is more for publicity and I swear she said that a lot of that was because of her mom.
I am happy for her that she feels ok to be her true self.

So I have a soft spot for Jojo. My dd is 9 and not into her anymore. But when she was 6, she was ALL in. In fact one of her songs "Boomerang" literally got my daughter through her chemo treatment. She would belt out the line: "I'm gonna come back like a boomerang!" all the time.
At the time the bows were HUGE and they didn't have them on headbands yet, so DD would tape them to her bald head. DH's cousin found out and wrote to the merchandise department and they sent her a bunch of bows on headbands (so she could wear them!) and some other small things--stickers, etc.
So just another thing that made me really appreciate as a mom.

So I danced for Abby when I was little. Her mom actually owned the studio at the time and Abby was just a teacher. But she was awful. Her mom was the sweetest so it’s always been surprising Abby is how she is. And they had the company students, the ones in high school, teach our classes mostly. It was way before they got big though. It was a tiny studio in a strip mall at the time.
I also have connections to Kelly (mom to Brooke and Paige) and she’s pretty normal and friendly.
Edit: I specifically remember one time it was picture day for our dance yearbook or whatever it was. And I was in a straddle position and I was like 7 or 8 and Abby kept yelling at me to suck it in. I was a larger kid so that stuck with me.
