Omg morecoffeeplease thanks for responding! That must have been kind of neat to watch your old studio! I’m not surprised Abby is terrible IRL. I think she suffers from some things my internet credentials don’t qualify me to diagnose. She’s insane. And her mom seemed well loved by everyone.
I’m glad to hear Kelly and kids are normals. Brooke was my favorite to watch. She seemed like a very sweet girl and I was sad when she left even though it’s for sure better for her.
but when your “brand” is icon to children 5-13 this is a tricky road to navigate.
Which is bullshit because it's so important to have representation for that age group. I feel like it's pulling teeth at every stage - first making sure that we had enough representation of same gendered parents in books so it looks like real life. And then looking for books about gender queer kids and transboys (most picture books focus on boys who like to wear dresses or transgirls). And then trying to find picture books with lesbians who *aren't* moms - because being gay is more than a parenting style, etc. etc. etc.
Right now, Jojo isn't on my kids' radar at all, but we might have to start watching her a little.

Strong agree! And representation is a damn bitch too - take it from someone who is trying to raise a kiddo with a non-binary spouse. Here’s hoping the loving drown out the hateful so it keeps getting easier.

Due to my buying job, I know about JoJo from the merchandising side. Her brand was at a crossroads anyway due to her age. She's almost an adult now, so it was tough to envision her on those bow packages much longer.
I had heard they were thinking about having an animated representation of her on the merchandise moving forward, to give it some longevity and freeze her in tweendom forever.
I don't think her merchandise will disappear from stores... there is a lot of markup in those bows.

I saw there was some controversy this year because she had a game marked 6+ but it included questionably age appropriate questions like "Have you ever walked in on someone naked or had someone walk in on you?" "Have you ever taken money from someone's purse or wallet without asking?" "Learned the art of twerking" "Who in this room would you most like to date?"
Which I guess to me doesn’t seem EGREGIOUS but also not particularly kid-friendly. She apologized and said she had not reviewed the game itself, it just used her likeness for the branding. It was pulled this year.
Her most recent video is eye and ear bleed — m.youtube.com/watch?v=9KPJmmvE58Y — but I’m still happy for her of course and glad kids will get exposed to more varied representation

These sound like high school drinking questions. OMG.

Yeahhhh it was accused of “grooming.” These questions make me uncomfortable. Also imagine asking a six year old if they’ve ever skipped on a bill at a restaurant, lol "Have you ever not paid your bill at a restaurant?" "Have you ever peed in the shower?" "Have you ever gone outside without underwear (a bathing suit doesn't count)?" "After the age of 10, did you ever pee or poop in your pants?" “Kissed a boy”

I watched a beauty youtuber who had her on as a special guest, and they talked a bit about her branding. She represents millions of dollars of branding for Nickelodeon. I absolutely believe they just slap her picture on things without her knowing what the product is.

She said as much when people started going after her for the questions. She doesn’t handle her licensing directly. It’s all Nickelodeon and they don’t run things by her.

I have said this before, but I really appreciate having a 17 year old star that still seems/looks like a kid. So many her age look like 30 year olds with filler and overdone brows. People usually mistake my 17 year old for 14 because she only wears make up on special occasions and she likes “fun” clothes.
I hope she finds peace and happiness and she grows.
