Governors’ shutdowns did not cause the pandemic jobs crisis
The coronavirus pandemic has killed more than 416,000 Americans and recently pulled the U.S. economic recovery into reverse. Some states have shut down again to get a handle on surging caseloads. And critics have blamed those states’ governors, typically Democrats, for job losses. But pandemic-related economic research shows the shutdowns aren’t killing jobs; the virus is.
I tested positive for antibodies yesterday two weeks post second vaccination, with a negative antibody test just prior to vaccination.
This may seem like a big fat "duh" -- but because people on immunosuppressant medications were excluded from the Pfizer/Moderna trials, I had concerns on the efficacy part (safety should be similar). It worked!

This gives me hope for my grandmother. She's on heavy immunosuppressants to manage RA, and her doctor has told her they're not certain yet whether she can get vaccinated. For now we're trying to get everyone around her vaccinated as soon as possible to hopefully give her a bit of protection.
In other good news, my H got his vaccine date! February 9.
cattledogkisses fingers crossed. It’s an n=1 and only a snapshot of one part of the immune system, but still exciting (to me personally)
If it helps, I am on Remicade 10mg/kg infusions every 8 weeks and was mildly anemic at the time of vaccination
I’m hoping my GI will start a study to track outcomes for vaccinated people on biologics but she seemed a little overwhelmed last time I asked 😊 we talk again tomorrow!

I got my second vaccine on Sunday. Holy balls, it was awful. I had to call out of work yesterday because I could barely move. Body aches, headache, skin on fire, fever, fatigue like whoa (I took 3 naps), and no appetite. I feel much better today, but still crappy. I'd still get it, though, to not get the virus!

My husband got his second dose yesterday and he's struggling: major fatigue, muscle soreness, irritability(well, more so than usual lol). I agree though, still better than getting COVID!

I had my gyno visit this morning and I asked her if she was vaccinated. She said everyone in the (fairly large practice) has now gotten both shots. I commented that the rollout has been so slow and disappointing and she really pushed back saying that is not true from her perspective. It was reassuring to finally get the perspective from someone that thinks things are not going totally atrociously.
Another doctor I saw a few weeks ago did not have the same perspective.
So...at least some good things seem to be happening here in Maryland. LOL
this was horrible. two hospitals had to cancel all appointments for the first dose. People were already registered and had dates set, and then got notified they would no longer get the vaccine. The Press Secretary said Florida only used about half of our supply. DeSantis is saying we don't have enough. I have no idea what happened.
WHITEHORSE, Yukon - A wealthy Canadian couple have been charged after allegedly lying about their residency and occupation to receive doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine meant for largely First Nation residents of a remote Yukon community.
Businessman Rodney Baker, 55, and his wife Ekaterina Baker, a 32-year-old actor, flew into Whitehorse last week, where they chartered a private plane to take them 450 kilometres northwest to Beaver Creek, a community of approximately 100 people, most of whom belong to White River First Nation.

I wonder how costs will change as states move away from hospital vaccination. It seems like private retailers are more likely to charge the vaccination administration fees and that could be harmful for many communities.
It doesn’t sound like this was a change made by the hospitals due to staffing, but a decision by the state. We should have vaccines in all the places so people can get it the easiest way for them. Hopefully, one dose vaccines will help with all of the chaos.

My parents just got their appointments for this Friday!!! Their doctor put them on the list this morning and they got the call this afternoon. So happy.
I’m upset about the hospital part. My parents are scheduled to get their first dose at a hospital Thursday and I’m worried about them being able to get it and then get the second dose. It was hard enough to track this appointment down and we’ve had it set for three weeks so I haven’t been looking into alternatives.

I agree. These decisions do not help people who live in retail deserts.

Ok I don’t know the exact legislation, but all the info I’ve been given is that "no one can be denied the covid vaccine if they can’t pay the administrative fee." So yes I guess some place could be extra sneaking and try to ask people to pay the fee and people might be deterred by that, but at least in my city I think anyone that did that would be swiftly reprimanded and shut down.
Well I guess the caveat to that is this is true for vaccines bought through the US government. I guess at some point when vaccine supply is much more available and people are able to buy their own supply of the vaccine, that could become a thing, but my understanding is that’s not going to happen for awhile. Right now all the supply is coming from the federal government.
I don't know if this includes you where you are currently at with your health, but it looks like people who are undergoing treatment for cancer and other immunocompromised people will be eligible Feb 1st.
Did you see the news today about the ceo taking home some of the doses for personal use?!
YES.
That’s literally the time I was there- I was one of the last people vaccinated that night. I’m sick thinking about the fact that apparently people were turned away earlier in the day, and then it was a scramble to use all the doses by that night. The way my girlfriend described it (she was one of the people thawing and concentrating) it was pretty chaotic in terms of making the vials and guesstimating how many they’d have. But to think he took some home is just INSANE.

I did! It’s annoying my for a multitude of reasons, the primary one being why TF does MD keep moving the goal posts. I’m glad they did it though, even if it really just changes it back to where it was before the first time they changed it.
As for me, they are only considering active cancer treatment. I’m technically out of that for Hodgkins. Of course, I did just have surgery for a possible solid tumor, but initial biopsy was just precancer. They did a full excise to look for hidden actual cancer, so... who knows. Maybe.

This is awesome, but how the heck do you get an appointment for one? LOL
My H got a letter from his employer which should make him eligible in phase 1A, but there are literally no appointments to be found. Hopefully some open up soon, I guess.
So, in the DC area, some people have discovered that some counties are not restricting vaccine to residents. So, Montgomery county folks are flocking to PG county. My coworker was able to schedule a vaccine appointment for her mother just over the county line, at a supermarket. Due to work things, her wife took her mother, and she told me her wife was texting felling so guilty because everyone in line was white, while everyone shopping in the store was not. Fits with all those graphics of how vaccine distribution and covid incidence are inversely related in.. DC, Miami, Chicago. Reinforces it’s all about who has the resources (internet knowledge, smart phones, etc) to make the appointment.

Per this article, they get it from a hospital-based provider.
icedcoffee , max vaccination sites opening next week
Today I announced new actions to expand the state’s COVID-19 vaccination network, including the opening of at least six mass vaccination sites and new pharmacy partners in targeted areas.

Thanks! rubytue, just sent that to my H. I don't even know why I'm looking at this. I'm phase 3 and my parents live in a different state. My H can figure it out for himself and his parents. And I'll get mine sometime before 2022, I hope.

I think the doses FL hasn’t used are being held back for second appointments.
ETA - So, in the sense that he said we “don’t have enough,” for new first timers, that might be accurate.

Thought this was interesting - from Covid Act Now
A study analyzed data from Twitter to uncover early-warning signals of COVID outbreaks in Europe during the winter of 2019-2020. Regions that ended up being important breeding grounds for outbreaks had unexpected levels of Twitter chatter of concerns about pneumonia several weeks before confirmed cases of COVID appeared. These results point to the value of digital surveillance systems of social media to predict future disease outbreaks. Read the study.https://covidactnow.cmail20.com/t/t-l-mlkjhky-vddhuiyil-d/

*sigh* I wrote my personal statement for grad school last year on infodemiology. There was a fascinating study looking a music festival and twitter to track a flu outbreak.
spoiler alert, I am not working on my PhD in epidemiology 😔
