“The toe of his boot is no longer touching the ground, this means that all of his body weight is being directed down at Mr. Floyd’s neck,” testified Dr. Tobin.
Why the insistence that change can't possibly happen at the beat level, the cops on the streets, and that it has to happen from the top down with legislation? The cops had choices, they made shitty ones.
I am sure your question is rhetorical but I think that status quo of our systems (like, all of them) is so engrained, embedded, and rooted that it takes a radical creativity, a radical imagination, that most of us are truly incapable of. I’m speaking more about the lack of faith in possibility for change than about anything or anyone in this thread, though. I suppose we lack said creativity because the systems themselves are so very successful at what they do.
I agree NewOrleans , It takes radical change at every level.
PDQ: My brother was a police office in small rural town. He was a cop that made the 'right' choices. He left after a year because he felt like those good choices put a target on his back. His fellow officers resented him for not following the status quo of harassing and intimidating people. The people in charge ignored his objections and he was afraid of being put in a dangerous situation with no back up. I am sure that happens all over the country.

Well, there’s a saying that if you name the problem, you become the problem. Sounds like that’s what happened here.
I am not unbiased. But the defense does not appear to be poking many holes in the case thus far. I guess we will see when they make their case. prosecution’s case and their witnesses so far are impressive and impactful. May it bring justice.

It’s garbage that a juror’s uncle is a cop.
I’ve been pretty much watching mostly all day since the beginning (yay a quiet few weeks at work!)
So far it’s either been:
1. An officer can feel a person who is recording their (the officer’s) actions as distracting.
2. An angry mob could limit an officer from providing CPR or medical care.
3. The officer didn’t have his knee on Floyd’s neck but his shoulder.
4. Drugs could impact a person.
And/or any combination of any of the above nonsense.
I missed most of today but did get to see defense questioning the pulmonologist and he seemed very personable and laughed at some of the BS defense questioning because it was just so beyond reality.
Like I mentioned earlier, I’m guessing the prosecutors won’t even entertain a deal at this point. I also don’t think it’s necessarily garbage that a juror’s family member is a police officer given the testimony from Chauvin’s superiors.
I think if the jury doesn’t convict there will be protests in many places..and I will be a participant.
I'm going to assume both sides took a gamble with that one and that's why they agreed to have this person on the jury. It could be a pro or a con depending on the cop and the relationship one has with that family member. It could absolutely be a plus or minus for either side.
I'm scared what's going to happen in Minneapolis if Chauvin doesn't go to prison for a long long time. It's NOT going to be good :-(
I think things are going to be rough after the verdict regardless of what is handed down. But I also think it's bigger than Minneapolis.
I agree it will be bigger than Minneapolis, and yet I'm also very scared about Minneapolis, where I live, in the Third Precinct.
I think once the defense is on, things are going to start to get agitated. We haven't heard as much from the defense yet, and we will. And people, with good reason, are going to hate it.

I wish CNN were broadcasting the trial and not Prince Philip's life story. I understand his death is newsworthy, but the occasional segment throughout the day would be sufficient for U.S. audiences, no?
Or maybe they have switched over by now. I'll have to check. I did see I could stream it online, but I don't want to do that on my work computer, I prefer to use my personal phone or the actual TV.

I'm in the 3rd precinct too. I feel ya.
The gas station down the street reopened only a month or so ago--and I know I'm lucky it went that fast!--after burning last May.

One of my BFFs is in the 3rd distruct too. Her family usually packs up in May/June and spends the entire summer up north at her cabin. They are alfready up there this year, becauee of the trial and what's to come.

We talked seriously about leaving in May last year but ultimately decided to stay with the house. Other friends nearby left town, and I definitely understand that decision.
I want to go back to work a day or two a week downtown, but I can't until the trial is over.
I'm watching again in between work meetings today and I can imagine the jurors eyes are glazing over in the defense's questioning of the forensic pathologist.
The questions today from the defense to the forensic pathologist are very strange.
They are trying SO hard to proved his death was caused by drugs, but they can't get the support from the experts. I am very curious to see what medical experts the defense call and what they ask them.
I wanted to punch the defense attorney when he compared Mr. Floyd's prone position facedown on the pavement to his own self lying prone by a pool in Florida. WTF, asshole??

omg what? A) offensive B) false analogy C) asshole!

What the fuck?? I'll hold him while you punch him.
I used to work somewhere where someone died of positional asphyxia due to a prone restraint (before I ever got there) and that dismissiveness of comparing anything like that to lying face down by a pool is fucking disgusting.

I just looked it up and read about this line of questioning and wow it is actually stupid and leaves a mile wide open:
Blackwell, the prosecutor, subsequently asked Thomas, “George Floyd was not laying by the pool on his stomach in Florida, was he?”

This is what confuses me the most about the defense so far. Rule #1 of cross examination is to never ask a question you don't know the answer to, and #2 is to never leave the door open. He's repeatedly doing both and IMO it's been pretty disastrous for them.
I am sick in bed with my garden variety virus and just watched the prosecution’s opening statements including the video. I had seen still pics and small clips last summer when it first happened, never anything more. I knew about the kneeling and poor George pleading.
Seeing it all. Mother of God. It’s just egregious. I can’t fathom the chilling *coldness* of Chauvin and Thao. Just flat, cold apathy.
And when he told the female firefighter “that’s not very professional” because she called him a bitch, like, they didn’t listen to her actual professional demand for a pulse, but THEN he wanted her to be a professional!?
There are so many hideous layers at work here.
I feel dirty and disgusting and disgusted having watched it. I truly can’t imagine the trauma those active witnesses are living with. That POC are living with thinking it could be them or someone in their lives. Our country is a sin and I am so disgusted that I just go about my life and we all just participate in it every minute.

Anyone watch today? I think the witnesses today were a good choice to close the prosecution’s case. Listening to his brother was sweet as he was describing George as a mama’s boy.
Also liked the testimony of the use of force expert. He wasn’t letting the defense twist the way the questions were being asked and the clarification he asked for seemed on point.
Defense asked to sequester the jury starting today due to the other police shooting outside of Minneapolis! Judge denied.
