Philip's life and family are more interesting than Elizabeth's IMO. Yeah, they're distant cousins, but the Duke of Edinburgh is the great-nephew of Empress Alexandra of Russia. His mother was congenitally deaf, became a nun, and helped Jews escape Athens during WWII, so is listed as Righteous Among the Nations at Yad Vashem and buried in Jerusalem. His favorite sister was a nazi, though she and her family died in a plane crash in 1937. His family fled Greece when he was an infant due to political upheaval.
All that happened to Liz was that her uncle abdicated.
The royals...they're just like us. Awkward AF holiday dinners and all.
A thought I just had - how much overlap is there between the americans who are into the nitty gritty of the British monarchy and people who really love watching true crime shows? Is this a venn diagram with a lot of overlap? it feels similar to me. Lots of nerdy details and history to immerse yourself in, mostly terrible people, on TV a lot...
This is interesting to me because most people I know that are into the BRF history are not really into true crime but more reality TV types. They love the drama stuff like Diana and Charles or gossip-y sites like Lainey and GOMI.
I'm a huge history nerd and was really into Mary Queen of Scots as a kid, so that's what interests me most- the complexity of the people who are in these families. I have too much random knowledge about the BRF and Scottish monarchy in my head. I'm not really into true crime or reality TV, though.

I mean, sample of one here, but no. I loathe true crime anything and pay attention to the Royals pretty closely in a news/historical context.

His mitochondrial DNA led to the identification of the Russian royal family’s remains eighty years after their murders.
And the Queen’s engagement ring (along with a bracelet worn in recent years by Kate) was made from diamonds taken from a tiara previously owned by Phillip’s mother, Alice - that tiara had been gifted by Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra. And Alice is a Righteous Among the Nations honoree.
Re: the true crime stuff, I am very much not a fan of that. I find the royal stuff interesting because it links individual people to specific moments/events of history, and it’s an organized and easy-to-remember way for me to keep track of historical events. What with all their intermarrying (sometimes to a gross degree), it connects so many different countries and historical events in a fascinating manner.
ETA: I’m also not into reality tv or celebrities, either. But I equate the royals with those.
wawa I fit your Venn diagram although I trend more towards true crime podcasts. I love royal history. But I do trend towards more WWI Britain. It's crazy how many of Victoria's descendants are spread all over Europe. I get into Wikipedia clicking sometimes and trace British/German lineages just for fun to see how far back and forward they go. Total history and true crime nerd over here.

I love true crime but pretty much know nothing about the royals. When I saw "Prince Phillip died" it didn’t register to me that that’s the queens husband. I would def get that question wrong if it were a trivia question! I think the royals obsession is a white people thing. My Black British partner def isn’t in to the bitty gritty either.

Anne's Greek Key tiara, which Zara wore in her wedding, was also one of Princess Alice's pieces, potentially a wedding gift.
When I saw the alerts this morning on my phone RE Philip's death, I decided to turn on the Today Show, since they always have segments on the BRF whenever there's anything newsworthy.
It was nice seeing that Friday's show was mostly Fluff-News: Death of Prince Philip (sad for his family, but a lighter piece of news), something about a lost city in Egypt, and returning a sea turtle to the ocean. Nothing about crazy Tweets from the President, or insane policy passed earlier in the week. It was like a breath of fresh air.

Why do people think the Queen wants to stick it to Charles? I'm sure they have had their disagreements as all parents and children do, but there is nothing to indicate she hates him or thinks he is unfit.

I feel like she knows he's just...not really a good human. I think you can love your kid and know he's an asshole. 🤷♀️

Doesn't explain her and Andrew though.
She and Charles have always had a strained relationship. I can't imagine a relationship where your future is based on the other person dying/someone taking over your very hard fought legacy.

Not only is it a white people thing, it is one of the whitest white people things ever. Even more than mayonnaise and wonder bread.

I thought bitty gritty was maybe a reference to Prince Harry being ginger until I read again and determined it was probably nitty gritty, LOL.
I'm enjoying my one friend's feed that is basically, "Whelp, another colonizer dead." Which is a stark contrast to this one. LOL!
Hah, yeah, my circles are... not mourning, that’s for sure.
Definitely could have pushed me over with a feather, I thought he had already died a while ago. 🤷🏻♀️
Yeah nothing on my Twitter about it nor anyone I texted. Not even a colonizer is dead joke lol. I wouldn’t have known about it if I hadn’t come here today.

Of course, but she seems to be sticking with Andrew so 🤷🏻♀️
Will is showing some major asshole tendencies himself.
I was texting my friend this AM and she said she was talking to her British colleagues at her company's London office and offered her condolences on his death and her colleagues said how sad everyone in Britain is. Are you f'ing kidding me? And then she follows up with- if he had just made it to his hundredth birthday it would have been so inspiring for the UK. Barf!! I responded that he was a racist jackass and a lot of people aren't sad. It was time for him to die. And she didn't respond for a few minutes and then i thought "holy shit is she offended on behalf of Prince Philip?" But then she answered in a few minutes and said "Yeah, you're right. That whole family is a bunch of racist jackasses." So we can stay friends. :-)

My whole feed is full of people mourning him - unsurprising as my feed is full of Brits. Black cabs lined all up and down the mall for the cabbies to pay their respects. Really lovely.
I found Price Philip problematic although do acknowledge and recognize that he spent his entire life under a microscope and in the service of the public and the Queen. Can’t have been an easy life.
I feel worried and so sad for the Queen. It will be devastating for many Brits when she passes on.

A malaysian friend told me. Lol. To be fair news broke while we were at dinner together, and I don't look at my phone when with friends.

I can say as someone in London (and now British) that the majority of my friends are NOT mourning him. They think it's sad he died for the Queen's sake (like they would for almost anyone who lost a long-time spouse) but they also aren't mourning and they recognise just how much a racist he was. The Boomers I know are in full mourning, some of the white migrants who came when young are mourning (they are really into the monarchy and being "British") but that's about it. I am not sad about it at all.
It did seem like this was questionable due to the 10 day quarantine required upon entering the UK. So either they're waiving that for him, or they've moved the funeral past next weekend.
While it's news that he died, I was SOOOOOO annoyed with the TOday show yesterday. They had just started a clip about the 2 shootings that had happened the day before, and then cut into it to announce the breaking news of his death. Then spent AN HOUR talking about his life, the royals, their marriage, etc etc etc.
Savanah put on her empathetic sad voice and off they went...
I was like "There is REAL news going right now that I'd like to hear about".
Flipped to CBS and they were actually talking everything else going on. THey did 2 brief "Prince Philip died" clips, but then went back. THANK YOU.
He was 99. He wasn't in great health. His death didn't warrant an hour on the TOday show in lieu of everything else.

ECB , it was on EVERY SINGLE basic channel all day long. The same showing of info on 5 channels. It actually pissed the British off, even those who were sad about his passing.

We already know in this country that it's one rule for us and one rule for the rich and famous. It's shown to us every single day with our gov't.
I thought I saw restrictions were loosening if people are vaccinated, but I think we all know this would be the case even if Harry isn’t. I can’t help but feel terribly for him- traveling all that way for the funeral of a grandparent you were close to is bad enough without the part where you have no idea just how openly hostile the family will be towards you. And doing it without your spouse by your side and with the whole damn world watching has got to be a special kind of terrible.
