A few of you mentioned that you tend to wear more lipstick now. I've never been a lipstick wearer, but recently realize that I've lost some of that youthful pigment in my lips. I feel like if I found a lipstick that works for me, it would pull together my look (especially on zoom) nicely.
So, how did you find your favorite type and shade? It all seems overwhelming so I've been putting it off.
Tagging pinkballoons and Aquatica because I know you both mentioned lipstick in the prior thread, although I know more of you did too.
Any advice welcome
********Update********
This is so unimportant, but I love when people update their posts. After a few weeks of testing it out....I FOUND A WINNER!
Big thanks to everyone who recommended the Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey. I LOVE it. I feel like me, with a bit more of a youthful punch to my lips, which is exactly what I was wanting. Finger snaps to you all
I'm interested to see this discussion, because I have never once worn lipstick without feeling absolutely foolish. I often like it on others, but I feel like it makes me look like a clown! Is it possibly because I have thin lips and calling attention to them is ill advised? Or have I just used the wrong color?

I like lip pencil more than lipstick lately. Like I wear a lip liner as my full lip color. I usually stick with something that is close to but enhances my natural lip color. For special occasions I'll go with a bold lip sometimes, but not always. I guess it's trial and error to find the right shade, trickier now that you can't just go to a makeup counter and ask to try things on. My go-to lip pencil lately is "Whirl" by MAC. I follow a model on IG who has similar coloring to me and when people ask what shade she's wearing I pay attention.
Of course, I don't wear lip color very often these days since it's wasted behind the mask.

I love wearing lipstick and lip gloss and feel like it pulls me together, but I think my lips are one of my best features. I recommend starting with a shade that is basically your lip color but better. Stick to a nice neutral that way. Buxom Dolly is the best for me.
I really like the Clinique Almost Lipstick. I received it as a sample/free gift year years ago and have been buying it ever since. It's the perfect berry shade and it adjusts to your skin tone, so it looks good on everyone. The swatch in the description looks dark, but it's not it all. It is very sheer and buildable. If I want a more bold look, I use a lip liner and fill in my lips, then top it with the lipstick. I keep a tube in my desk to swipe on before video calls and gives the perfect natural put together look. It is also very moisturizing.
ETA: I use the shade black honey. I had a sample of the pink honey and it's okay, but is more of a gloss/no color option. The darker shade gives a better color to my lips.

I tend to find a brand that I really like and branch out with colors from there.
I love Nyx butter lipstick and Urban Decay vice lipstick. I hate matte shades because they’re so freaking dry, so I try to stick with satin finishes. I like pinks and reds, I struggle with berries and browns, just because of my coloring. I usually color in my lips with a nude pencil first and then put lipstick on over it.
I can sometimes get self conscious when I’m wearing an especially bright color, but then I remember I don’t give a shit about what anyone else thinks because they’re stupid and I’m the best, lol.

I've always worn lipstick bc it makes me look more put together but the shades and finishes have changed over the years. I have always been a fan of neutrals bc as a girl on a budget through HS and college, I couldn't afford alot so I had a few neutrals (ones for day, evening, casual, glam) that worked. As I got older, I paid attention to what models w my coloring wore (ahem Cindy Crawford) and shadowed their color/finish shifts as they got older too. I looked washed out if I forgo lipstick, so chapstick only is a no go for me. I tried tinted balms and they just didn't provide enough color? coverage? durability? like a lipstick can.
I have a bunch of pink/brown neutrals for my day go tos having a matte finish and my date night ones being the same pink/brown tones with a subtle glossy finish.
My sister did the work for me. lol She found a shade of a MAC lipstick that she loved and that was neutral-ish enough that she felt like she could apply it without a mirror and not worry about precision. I borrowed it once and really liked it on me, which makes sense since we have the same skin tone, so I ended up buying my own tube. I wore it a few weeks ago for a Zoom presentation at work and it was amazing the difference it made in how put together I felt on screen. That said, I haven't bothered wearing it any other time because of masks.
I also really like the Fresh Sugar tinted lip balms. They are super moisturizing but have enough pigment to actually be like a lipstick too.

I like the LOreal long lasting matte lipsticks. I hate it when lipstick comes off or you have to keep reapplying. This lipstick will stay on long term even if you’re eating or whatever. The pigment itself is drying but the other side is a clear balm you can apply over it. I’m looking for a new bright orangey red if anyone has any suggestions, maybe Mac?

There were a few discussions last year about The Lip Bar and I ordered a full face kit. Then I got to clicking around and ordered a bunch of the lip products. The liquid matte was a good step from lip gloss to lipstick.
I love that I can see the color on a model who has a similar skin tone before buying, and I haven’t been disappointed yet. (The As If is my current favorite, but I’m eyeing Bawse Lady as my next one.) Their Instagram page has lots of “normal” people showing off their looks too, so I can gauge what will look great on me too.
I don’t use any special exfoliants or anything, because I can’t manage all that, so I just rub a damp towel across my lips at night when I wash my face to keep them from getting all cracked and dry. I’m diligent about lip balm at night. I think that helps the color go on and stay on well.
When I first started playing with it, I felt I looked a little awkward, but I kept at it. I use very little eye makeup aside from mascara and maybe an eyeliner, but I balance the lip with whatever eyebrow magic I got in the full face kit. That makes me feel less awkward and more confident with a bold-ish lip.

This stuff is fantastic if you're looking for something that's subtle. Look for "sheer" products if you're worried about drawing too much attention to your lips. Stay away from anything touted as highly pigmented.
Another, newer line that I'm enjoying is from Rihanna's Fenty brand - www.fentybeauty.com/slip-shine-sheer-shiny-lipstick/FB40026.html?dwvar_FB40026_color=FB4088&cgid=makeup-lip. I am pretty sure that in the photos, the models have a gloss over top because it's not anywhere as shiny on my lips as it is on theirs. I got "BubbleRum." It does have some sparkle in it which I wasn't expecting and would prefer that it didn't, but I still like the color and I don't find the sparkle too distracting.

Black Honey is one of my go to neutrals since I first discovered it. Just enough sheen and color for day w/o being too much.

I've always worn lipstick - like I'll pretty much never leave the house without it. Especially now that I'm in my 40's - I looked very washed out without it. MAC counter and trying things on is what I usually do. I don't know how that works now though... MAC Amorous is my go-to at the moment. I need colors without any orange in them so cool pinks are more my thing. I have an enormous lipstick/gloss collection and then I just sort of layer depending on how I feel - tone it up or down. I wear a lot of gloss on top too.
I love lipstick and mascara and don’t leave the house with it. I would start with nude shades and depending on your skin tone find a peach or pink nude. I love cool tone pinks and love creamy lipsticks. My favorite lipstick brands are Mac, urban decay, and Charlotte Tilbury. I don’t like sticky glosses or mattes. I’ve recently started using a brand called axiology as they have a lot less packaging/use recycled products for their lipsticks. Axiology also lets you pick lipstick samples with every order so you can easily try new shades. Ilia’s multi stick in the color Tenderly is my favorite pink at the moment.

I'm curious.
I would say wrong color.
I have thin lips, and the only time I feel clown-ish is if I have a color that doesn't work for me.
Your lips are your lips....there is no "wrong", "too thin" or "too full", just too many people who think that way.
Vaseline Rosy lips. I feel like it adds just enough color to keep me from looking washed out and like I put in effort without actually putting in effort lol.

I really like the black honey color, too. It just adds a little something to your lips without being like, woah lipstick!
I went to Ulta and sampled a bunch when I was a bridesmaid at the end of 2019. I pretty quickly realized I don’t like lip stains or liquid lipsticks. They just looked so intense on me. I don’t wear much lipstick so didn’t want to go all in on that. I ended up getting a NARS lip pencil, which I love. It lasts a long time. I put just chapstick over it if I want a more matte look, or gloss for shiny.
Sephora Collection lip stain. The “infinite rose” shade is a nice natural color with a hint of shimmer. That’s my go-to for every day. The “always red” is also fabulous. I have other various shades as well, but I always stock up on those two. And it literally does not come off. Maybe if I’m eating something messy and wiping my face. But it really does stay on.

Any time I felt uncomfortable with lip colour, it was either because it was new and I wasn't used to seeing that colour on my face or it wasn't a good colour for me. I always tried to live with a colour for a period of time and got used to colours that I didn't think I would.
I love wearing lipstick and have found Mac’s Soar lipliner followed by Mac’s Brave lipstick is the perfect combo for me.
ETA- regarding lipstick coming off- I have a whole routine, but my color stays put all day. The only thing my lipstick hasn’t beat is the mask, but even then it looks good on my lips- I just worry the extra that gets inside my mask will smear on my face while I talk. I always scrub my lips in the shower with a wash rag of some sort. Then, when applying makeup I apply concealer around my lips so there’s a bold line of color when apply the lipstick. I put on chapstick and kiss my hand to get excess off. Then, I apply the liner all over my lips. Everywhere that the lipstick will go. I could basically leave the house with that, but I like the moisture of lipstick on top so I put a thin coat of that on. Take a Kleenex and kiss it, getting excess off. Then, separate the Kleenex to 1 ply. Put the 1 ply to your lips and dab finishing powder on top. Last, I run my thumb through my mouth (like a thumb suck, but not sucking) so lipstick won’t get on my teeth throughout the day. Perfect every time.
I discovered lipstick during quarantine and I like ColourPop’s Ultra Blotted Lip product. They last a long time, aren’t too drying and the color is a bit more subtle than fully pigmented lipstick (but buildable if you want more). They’re also a lot cheaper than other similar products that were recommended to me ($8ish) so I didn’t feel bad about buying a few at a time to find the right shades.
