DD's private lesson instructor and I think she has been making great progress at gymnastics. Team coaches don't think so.
Masks are required at all times for both athletes and spectators and social distancing is expected from all. I found it very interesting how different teams followed this based on where they are located in our state. Local teams and teams north of us were very strict teams to the south and east of us were super lax.
I feel like the meet entry fees are really high. Our 1st meet which was a big meet the entry fee was $90; last year it was $75 for the same meet. Dual meet with 1 other team here in town was $50. I know judges are paid and paid nicely but $50 just seemed high when it isn't a fundraiser but more of a chance to qualify for state/compete. We have another meet May 1st and they are saying $90 entry fee. I guess I'm just wondering if it is COVID jacking prices up.
We are doing spring soccer league which we have never done before. We are supposed to play against rec teams from other towns but I don’t know if we are allowed to play games or just same team scrimmage like we did in the fall. So basically I have no idea what it will look like at all.
Poms is going OK. I haven’t noticed an issue with registration being higher but that spots are getting filled quickly since we were shut down over the winter. It seems everyone wants to get out and do things. I can’t find an open swim class for 2 kids anywhere.

Both boys are in soccer and we can finally have games and scrimmages.
Hands are sanitized upon entry to the field, masks at all times by everyone (even during playing), spectators limited to members of the same household and must social distance on the side line (each team has half the field to spread out on and no mixing), no snacks or high fives after the games.
Racing is a pretty socially distanced sport so it’s been ongoing almost the whole time. Masks outside of your own space, etc.
DD1 played basketball all winter. Always masked, kids were supposed to sanitize upon entering and leaving the game. She had no cases or exposure all season.
DD2 has been playing soccer masked since July, 3-4 days a week, indoors and outside. Today was the first time we were notified of a possible exposure. We don’t know yet if the board of health will count it as an official exposure. A teammate tested positive, kids played together on Wednesday, but they were outdoors and masked. The standard is “within 6 feet for 15 mins” so I’m treating it like she was exposed. She is testing tomorrow.
DD1 starts softball soon. They will be masked, but I’m not sure other than that. Except for catchers and base runners, it’s pretty distant already.
DD had a really great meet Saturday. Did 2 skills on bars that she didn't execute at the last meet. Had a connected back handspring spotted on the floor. Improved her individual scores on 3 events (fall on beam) and improved her all around score by 2 points. I asked her coach what she needed to work on as we had a private lesson later and he said nothing she is doing great. Which is the complete opposite of the phone call I got Friday saying she isn't progressing. I would say what I saw Saturday was very similar skill wise on what she was doing in November before we got shut down for 4 months and she lost all those skills so jumping back to where she was 2 months later seems like a lot of progress. She spent her private lesson working skills she was never taught but all the other girls have like front and back walkovers.
Has anyone done karate or other martial arts during the pandemic? We’ve been holding off but DD has nothing scheduled after pins and that was her main goal for 2020 which got pushed back. I think they do it masked.
The girls have Girls On The Run twice a week after school. It's nice that they get to do an activity that doesn't require me coordinating rides and schedules. They're loving it so far.
Beau's son is starting baseball tonight. Not sure on mask requirements for the players, I think they'll have to at least wear them on the sidelines as that's how his rec soccer was in the fall.
I feel kind of bad that the girls aren't doing any sports. I've never paid much attention to the deadlines or sign ups and now that they see beau's son playing, they keep asking why they can't do it too. I have to pay closer attention next season.
DD is doing spring soccer. Everyone is to be masked when not playing on the field. There no benches and families are to bring a chair for their child to sit in. They mark spots so the kids are separated on the side lines.
Spectators are to wear masks the whole time if they are not 6’ away from other families.
We had the same protocols in the fall but with limited spectators per kid. We did not have an exposure phone calls.
My 11 year old dd started track. Masks are required between events, waiting in line at practice, etc. Masks are required to watch. Since meets are long, my husband and I take turns going. We usually volunteer to time during meets.
Both girls are continuing swim team. Temps are taking at the door, masks required, locker rooms are closed other than bathroom, no parents unless volunteering(can watch through windows on outside of building), spaced in lanes, etc. it’s been great. The only exposure has been at the high school level where kids drive together after school.
I feel like we are very lucky to be in a blue bubble in a very red state. If you drive 15-20 minutes in any direction, mask compliance is almost non-existent.

waverly, we have stayed out of our dojo since the pandemic started. From day one they haven't worn masks, they do partner work, and even Brazilian Jiu Jitsu falling over each other all the time. The classes were small back in the beginning of the pandemic (mostly because people stopped going) but now they are totally full with just a huge number of kids on the mat at one time. I'm probably never going back to that dojo.
There is another popular dojo that we will attend when we do start up again. They wear masks and distance. They've introduced trick classes because they have an instructor who is good at that and you can do that fairly distanced except for your spotter who is masked. I keep thinking "after christmas" then "after spring break". We probably just need to suck it up and go but I kind of like not having activities to drive to. Switching dojos is not going to be easy though. DS was a green belt and they have a different approach at this gym. I do think once we start he will love it though.
mustardseed2007, yeah I have been very hesitant to start down the martial arts path because the monthly fee is high. I have decided I will do it at the park district which has the same place come in and teach, but then there is no commitment. I keep pushing the date back too. Originally it would have been Fall 2020, then with the pandemic that became maybe spring 2021, then I decided to do poms instead because there is more distancing. And soccer is her fall sport, so maybe winter 2022 ha.
DD is finally ice skating again! Her Wednesday class only has one student, so she gets private lessons for the price of group (for one more session anyways). Score! They’re finally allowing spectators as well, so we can see her progress and it’s really nice.
school is doing middle school sports starting next week. 2 weeks of practice, followed by a week of games and competition. Whatevs...DD1 is going to do track.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
Baseball started last night and beau's son is so excited about it! He came home telling me that baseball is the best thing ever, he loves it so much, etc. I can't wait to go to a game and see him play!

Wait. Wait wait wait wait. So. He can play baseball. He can get on an effing plane every two weeks and defy CDC guidelines about unnecessary travel. But he can’t go to in person school, which CDC says is perfectly safe? Beau needs to revisit his custody agreement. Because that’s utter bullshit.

YUP
And she's the one who signed him up!
I may have spent my whole therapy session yesterday ranting about beau's ex.
DD1 started school track, which she’s never done before. She loves distance running (did XC in the fall) but her shin splints are so bad. I honestly don’t know if she will be able to stick with it. Her coach is pretty unhelpful about her it. First meet is next week, so we will see how it goes I guess.
Swim also starts next week. Several of her swim friends are doing track. The plan is to do track practice until it ends at 5, and then walk a mile to the HS where swim practice is at 5:30 and swim for two hours. Not sure how sustainable that is, but for right now that’s their plan.
DD2 gym has try outs in a few weeks. This is where we will see if she gets to move up to level 3. Because I don’t know much about gymnastics, I honestly have no clue if she will. But her coach sent me the sweetest message the other day telling me how well she is doing and how proud she is of her improvements. Because of her ADHD long practices are rough for her. So it was nice to hear that her focus is getting better.
Rumor is our town will be getting a diving club soon, which DD2 really wants to try. I would be so excited to make the switch!
Dd3 started spring soccer. Went to one practice, and then her class at school was put in quarantine because a teacher tested positive. So she missed the first game and will miss another practice. Her coach told DH she is a natural at the goalie position. The girls in our family are NOT ball sport people, so it will be interesting to see if that’s true!
Prices seem the same, COVID policies are generally the same, except our state lifted its mask mandate so there are some parents not wearing them here and there. Overall, not bad though.
Yeah don't get me started on remote kids who play sports (unmasked) and have unmasked play dates. I don't see the point. At first I was thankful because class size was smaller. But now, it is just inconsistent, and they acted holier than thou. Now, 99% are back. There is just the 1 or 2 kids where the parents are hold outs. I think in one of them, the person has been following the guidelines pretty consistently, but even she traveled when the CDC says don't travel. I am not against being careful, just don't post on social media how careful you are and then post your travel picture ha ha.
I'm not that judgemental I promise. It is more the holier than thou attitude that got me. If people choose to keep their kids remote than fine, but I think in most cases it didn't turn out that well for the kids. And I did keep DS remote longer because of the nanny, so I am not excluding myself, but the nanny was the reason he did well. In truth, parents should never have to face these kinds of impossible decisions, and I feel for them.
madringal- have you taken her to a running store where they will check her gait and recommend shoes? DH did that and it made a world of difference. He’s a long distance runner and kept having to lay up from training because of shin splints. I had them when I ran XC too but that was in the dark ages before fancy tech shoes.

This. It does make a big difference.
To treat the shin splints, I freeze Dixie cups about 3/4 full of water. Then peel the cup back to expose the ice. Rub the ice up and down along the shin. Once it’s cold, then use moisturizer or oil and massage between the shin bone and the muscle, breaking up the scar tissue that forms. I swear If I do that for a couple of days I’m like new, even without rest.
I just want to brag. DD got her front hip circle on bars Tuesday night, Thursday night she did her back walkover on the floor with no extra mats/paddling, and she got to start doing cartwheels on the floor beam Friday night at practice. Saturday at her private lesson she did 3 cartwheels in a row on high beam!
DD2 had her first official spring season soccer game - outside, which was great. She is so much more comfortable with this team, and had made great progress. Her coach has her playing defense most of the time now, which is great for her. She seems to have a bit of a knack for reading the offense, and had a ton of steals. Since she was home all week last week, we were able to work on throw-ins and corner kicks, which she always takes if on her side.
I’m happy that she seems to have found her groove.

So we went from barely any sports to spring soccer three times a week and spring hockey three times a week for DS. We've always said we weren't going to let DS play spring hockey, but he barely had a season this year due to covid and he got "invited" to play on this elite spring team. I fully acknowledge the ridiculousness of having "elite" teams for a bunch of 9 year olds, but having been completely unatheletic ourselves growing up, DH and I get irrationally excited when our kids do well in sports. So yup, we are paying for expensive and time consuming spring hockey. 🤦♀️
DD will do spring soccer twice a week. She's "meh" about it but I want her to be outside and do something

Both of my girls play soccer. Seven years in now. Eight for DD2. She played goal for a bit. I’m going to be honest with you. Being a goalie mom is terrifying. On so many levels. Lol. BUT, if she likes soccer enough to consider doing it long term, and if she does have natural ability and LIKES the position, run with it. Goalies can be hard to come by, especially good ones, and even more so in high school.
DD wrapped up her Wednesday skating lessons yesterday. I was shocked that they recommend she moves up to the next level already. So shocked that I had to have them update her status for next season since I'd already registered her for the same level! She did pre-alpha 2 times, Alpha 4 times, and after 1 time of beta, they recommended her moving up. I'll laugh if her Saturday teacher recommends a repeat..
DS was disappointed that the tot hockey class filled up before I got him registered, but I'm hopeful that the director will sneak him in - she's trying!
186momx , one of my friends is struggling with gymnastics. Some of the moms are mean and judgmental making comments on the other kids scores or even body types. Lots of emphasis on private coaching. She just got info on a competition and her daughter won't be competing at the same time, I guess as the others. It sounds like it won't be even anywhere near the same time, so it is a muti hour drive and then no one else is there from the gym. Any advice for her?
