I saw the video. It's all so horrifying. It was completely outrageous and unnecessary to tase him in the first place, let alone her getting confused which is which.
This is where I’m at. It’s so exhausting and frustrating and so so sad. It does not have to be this way.
Even if we accepted the pathetic taser/gun mixup excuse it does not explain why and how this poor young man ended up in this situation to begin with, or the way this officer’s actions unfolded prior to her shooting him. That was all racism. That’s the explanation. Everything else is just a side note, honestly.
Eta, so are protestors after 7pm going to be arrested?
I heard that!
I'm listening to the press conference now. It's Operation Safety Net- the plan they had in place for the Chauvin verdict. So it's a collaborative effort between multiple organizations. I see National Guard speaker is next.
I guess a vigil is planned that conflicts with the curfew.
The Brooklyn Center police department is flying a blue line flag right now per verified account of a Star Tribune reporter. So much for even trying to give an appearance of de-escalating.
So we shouldn’t expect any disciplinary action then. And certainly no better training.
Every single goddamn time it's the same exact bullshit. I am so sorry for Mr. Wright's family to lose him like this.
And then this weak ass "she got confuuuuuused" BULLSHIT. As always, when shit like this happens, the options are that she's dumb as fuck or that she's maliciously racist. NEITHER ARE ACCEPTABLE OPTIONS FOR FOLKS WE TRUST TO RUN AROUND WITH GUNS ENFORCING LAWS.
They moved the vigil up to 6pm to not conflict with the curfew.
May their grief not run 1 minute over their allotted time. 💔
I was only responding to the question someone posed about the vigil. I agree those at this vigil and the one planned at 38th and Chicago/George Floyd Square should have every right to publicly grieve and take whatever time to do so

That was not intended as an anything at you. Just at this beyond awful shituation.

DH was a LEO before he was a firefighter. He left for an number of reasons, including the "thin blue line" covering for bad cops bullshit. There is no confusing your Taser vs. your service weapon, especially with modernized tasers. Zero excuse.
This is so infuriating and horrifying. I’m so sorry for those who are personally triggered by these events.
I’m so angry. Here in our city, we had a couple of shootings that didn’t really hit the national news much and there has been no accountability for the cops involved.
I'm so angry and sickened by this. My heart goes out to all who loved him and to everyone who can see themselves and/or people they love in this situation.
PDQ As I sit in a building full of both guns and tasers, I can tell you it's really easy to tell the difference between the two and they're kept on different areas than guns. The tasers here are bright yellow. Though I don't understand either of them needing to be pulled out in this situation (logically, though I know the answer as to why it happened). Fuck, I have an air freshener hanging from my rearview mirror and no one is pulling me over for that. We know why.

This article is five years old, but it shows what we already know: this isn’t the first time someone was fatally shot because an officer confused a taser and a gun. Not surprisingly, it’s a “mistake” that tends to happen with Black victims.

The chief gave me a very "you will respect my authori-tay" vibe when responding to reporters today.
I want to say something about this, but at this point I feel like I've said it all before. I am just so, so sad and angry that this has happened yet again. I sincerely hope that Chauvin is convicted and that a message will be sent that this isn't ok.
I'm just playing arm chair quarterback here and please someone with more knowledge pipe in.
I just watched the body camera footage on my big screen and the male officer to the right of the female has a bright yellow thing on his belt that I am assuming is the taser gun. So if his is bright yellow, hers should be too right?

So the car rolled for blocks. Endangering the entire community. The passenger was injured when it crashed. And could have been killed alongside Daunte Wright.

The BC Mayor just tweeted that the city manager has been relieved of his duties and the deputy city manager will be taking over... The city manager has control over hiring/firing and budgets in the city.
Also the city council approved transferring authority of the police department over to the Mayor.

I will need a translation of the implications of this.

I'm not super well versed in Brooklyn Center governance, but IIRC, in BC, the mayor is sort of like the most important city council member, but has very little actual power unless he can get other city council members to vote with him on things. The city manager has most of the power that you typically associate with a mayor, like hiring, staffing, etc.
So I expect this means the mayor will now have decisions over what happens to the police department for a while. It also suggests that the city council thought that it was unacceptable that person who could've fired the responsible officer already hadn't done so.
I also think it's important (maybe more symbolically than anything else) that the mayor is a young black man and Brooklyn Center has one of the highest (if not the highest) percentage of black residents in the twin cities.

The city manager was the one in the press conference that was allllmost as bad as the police chief in the “everyone is entitled due process and blah blah blah”.
My hands are tied until the investigation is over.
