What should I know? My instincts are to start with an aluminum free deodorant for DD (8, turns 9 this summer). She is asking for a spray deodorant but I haven't come across one that is aluminum free.
Any specific recommendations? There's a lot of woo out there, it's hard to sort through what is a legit concern vs what is "oh my gawd, chemicals!!!11!!"

My ds started with Tom's Wicked Cool, but quickly asked to move to a more traditional (chemical-full) option. He also prefers the spray (he takes that to school for gym, has a regular stick of I think Old Spice at home). I wanted him to use it (and I still have to remind him) so I let him pick what he wanted to avoid the stinky pre-teen.

Pretty much the same for my dd. I thought she just didn’t like deodorant. But I put in a dove travel deodorant in her Christmas stocking and she seemed to like that a lot more than Tom’s. She asked for a bigger version. I’m all for whatever she will actually use at this point!!
We got the Tom's Wicked Cool for both my daughter and then the boy version for my son a few years later. It seems to work fine for kids who just start to need deodorant. DD has started to prefer mine (Suave or something), so we'll switch to that.
Speaking of deodorant, after my kids play outside, they smell horrible (!)...but not of body odor. Have you experienced this? It's the strangest thing, because the smell dissipates after a while, but it could knock me over when they first come in after being in the yard for more than 15 minutes. I've made a point of really sniffing them later in the day, and they truly don't smell bad - no hint of BO whatsoever.
What is this phenomenon? My H jokes that we live in a bog and bogs just smell, but it's not like the entire outdoors smells bad. I can walk out my door and enjoy being outside without smelling a thing, so what is happening to make my kids reek for a while after they play outside?
We live in MA, and they're almost 7 and 4. Am I alone?

This is just what kids smell like when they are active. Same thing happened after recess and gym in elementary schools - even in K.

DS also started out with Tom's Wicked Cool. I think he uses something else now (one of the "cooler" Old Spice? LOL) but he had no issues with Tom's. He is almost 13 and not a stinky kid though.

Something from outside is giving them an extra-special funk! The combination of active-child heat and whatever it is, it's toxic. lol They could train for the Olympics inside and smell fine, but if they even take a walk around the backyard, they can make my eyes water when they come in.

"Outside" is a smell lol. My dogs get it too when they've been outside.

Yes! DS just turned 8, and this was him last summer. I even came here posting about it. The smell seemed to be trapped in his moisture wicking shirts. (Nike, UA, etc.) I stripped them in the washing machine with baking soda and vinegar. Once the warm months were gone, so was the smell. At first I thought he needed deodorant, until I realized his shirts were the problem.
Not quite that strong true BO smell, but just a very unpleasant scent. So gross. I'm on-guard this year so we can avoid that!

I call this 'outside smell.' I feel like I am more sensitive to it than many people. I remember my mom loving the smell of sheets washed and hung out to dry on a line when I was growing up, but they just smell like outside to me.
My ten year old uses Native sometimes. I also use Native. There’s always a podcast I’m listening to that promotes it so I wouldn’t pay full price and try and find a promo code.

Jason makes a natural spray deodorant, although I'm not sure how easy it is to find in a store - I always just see their stick deodorants. I have heard it works pretty well.
Right now I scrub some of my Dove deodorant on DD, but I'm making a mental note to ask about this for when we visit the endocrinologist in 2 weeks to figure out why she's had stinky armpits from age 6.
