This is my life right now, too! Went to UC yesterday and all tests came back negative. She could have gone back to school today but I kept her home JIC. Chatted with her pedi and she thinks it’s a resurgence of her asthma (started as an allergy flare). FML. She’s been symptom free for 3 years!
Yup our exact diagnosis today! So annoying
Ugh I’m sorry!!! That dang nighttime cough is the freaking worst.

Just as I suspected, we are likely losing our primary date night babysitter who lives around the corner from us, at least until the kids can get vaccinated. I had a feeling she wouldn’t get vaccinated and DH confirmed she “needs to do more research.” But, in her case, I know exactly what that means. She teaches with DH, by the way. She’s been socializing as if nothing is happening.
The good news is, we’ve gotten super close with our next door neighbors since we’ve been home so much and several have already mentioned they would love to babysit, and they’re vaccinated. So at least there’s that.
Velar Fricative that stinks. Glad you've made new friends that can babysit though. We might do some swaps with friends and I am also getting a list of vaccinated teenagers that want to babysit from my city's democrat group on FB.

DH’s school had 0 cases on Friday. That increased to 5 by Sunday, and 9 by yesterday. Mostly students. So, because of CDC guidelines and the change in DOE policy, fully vaccinated teachers do not have to quarantine. So DH (school union rep) was having his phone blown up last night about how unfair it is that teachers who did the right thing by getting vaccinated are being “punished” while anti-vax teachers get to stay home to quarantine (though some in quarantine are partially vaccinated). DH just had to tell them there’s a reason teachers were prioritized for vaccination, and eventually the policies and guidelines will change and change again anyway. What he really wanted to say was “Did you get the vaccine to stay home more or did you get it so you won’t die of covid? Because congrats, at least you won’t die of covid but god forbid you can’t quarantine.”
But he is still annoyed at the anti-vax teachers. I am sure this teacher schism at every school exists now. And people at my job are slowly but surely realizing they don’t get to stay home if they’re fully vaccinated but exposed too.
Our neighbor told me yesterday that their (adult) daughter that lives with them tested positive. I guess there was an outbreak at her work. But OF COURSE our DD talked to her DD (the granddaughter of the owners, daughter of the COVID positive adult) over the fence, unmasked for like 15 minutes. It will be 2 weeks tomorrow since they talked so I am hoping it's a non-issue. But damnit, this is what happens when I let me guard down.
And of course I woke up this morning with congestion. I want to assume it was all the housework, sanding/sawing and gardening I did over the weekend but I can't be sure.
How long do we have to quarantine if last contact with them was the 6th?
It was outside and nearly two weeks ago? I would not be concerned in the slightest.
This makes me feel better. This is our closest scare during this whole thing and I went into a spiral of worry.

I totally understand and I’m sorry if my reply seemed flippant. Outside transmission is very rare though and a lot of time has passed. You should truly be in the clear.

Not at all. And with my anxiety, sometimes I need someone to just slap me, lol.

LOL. Because so much about this pandemic has been "fair." I would be pissed at the teachers that chose not to get vaccinated (for multiple reasons).
The one person in our office (I work in an Ob/Gyn office) who chose not to get vaccinated has been out with COVID the past two weeks (and numbers have been way down here). And I definitely was thinking I hope she isn't getting paid to be home right now when she chose not to get the vaccine (I'm almost certain she isn't). I'm pretty sure despite being a healthcare facility our company changed their sick policy back to status quo a few months back (which is unfortunate since that's when cases were skyrocketing here.).

Soooo we are going to see people either not get vaccinated or say they aren't vaccinated so they can get additional time off?
That's not awesome. I do not imagine those policies will stay in place next year which should help.
DS’ high school started back last week and we have 13 cases. Ten of those are all part of an indoor sports team. That whole program is shit down right now. But then it got around that some of the parents of the kids who tested positive let their kids go to the park to hang out together and the positive kids met up with some friends from another large sports team. My friend with a kid on that other team said they are currently on hold because of it. WTH parents?!?! Why are you letting your Covid positive kids out?!?!

are they getting covid pay for quarantining or have to use their own personal or vacation time? it seems like quarantining sucks and isn't just a vacation and would suck regardless, so i don't follow the people complaining's reasoning here
Just my opinion, employers who aren't offering covid pay need to stress that quarantining will be at the expense of an employees vacation or personal time, so getting vaccinated would be a huge benefit
Everyone gets a "freebie", basically - the first time they have to quarantine, it's on the employer's dime. Future times, either they work from home the whole time (if they can) or they take their own PTO. It's like that at my job too, and the policy existed before vaccinations. I believe most of these quarantining teachers are still teaching from home, so no, they don't have to take their own PTO unless they can't fully teach or it's their first quarantine period.
A bunch of DH's colleagues just want to stay home and never have to show up to work again. That's the crux of it. To be clear, that's happening at my job too and I'm not a teacher. I think we'll see a lot of departures because the people who don't want to show back up to work will be looking for fully remote jobs.

I'm sitting here. If you don't want to get vaccinated, then when do employers flip the switch and say "ok, but staying home means you're draining your own sick leave."
There's only so much leeway for so long before it's now on the employee if they haven't gotten vaccinated and they now have to stay home due to that choice.

I expect that this will ultimately be the policy. The "first time policy" I mentioned above will probably cease to exist.
DS and I spent 2 hours at the eye dr yesterday because DS wants to switch to contacts. They won't let him go home with them until he proves he can take them out and put them in. He successfully got them out but could not get them back in. We have to go back this morning to try again.
While we were there, the dr told us he was 2 days out from his second shot. He said he'd slept 12 hours on Sunday but still felt pretty crummy that morning. I felt bad for him. He owns the practice so he has to show for work or there's no money coming in.

I started wearing contacts in the 7th grade, and I remember being at the eye doctor for HOURS trying to take them out and put them back in. HOURS. I think there were tears - either from my mom or me.

DD now has an IEP for math. She started it yesterday, and it was just a 20-minute breakout session with the SPED instructor. She loved it, he is amazing, and helped her feel confident and relaxed. I think it's going to be so good for her.

Sometimes the videos of grandparents or kids crying when they finally get to hug their grandkids again really get me down. This won't happen with my kids. Grandparents all live far away so they only see them one every year, or every other year anyway. They are all nice and fine, but we don't talk a ton on facetime or anything. My kids are pretty indifferent most of the time.
karinothing *I'm* that way about my own parent/parental figures. It just hasn't been that hard this past year because we never really spent much time together anyway. I'm pretty sure the last time I saw my dad was 2018. People keep asking about how I can "move that far away from family"...it's not hard for everyone. My kids are only close to my mil because the other grandparents don't make an effort and then get angry about the kids not loving them enough. :::eye roll:::

Surrounding school districts are starting to drop their mask mandates. One is ending it on May 10. School is over less than 2 weeks from then. They really couldn’t have just continued until the end of the school year then reassessed in the fall? Thankfully I have a feeling our district will stick with it through the end of the school year despite the loud yelling of many parents.

Our district is ending their mask mandate on June 1st. This is fine as school gets out on May 28th. HOWEVER they are saying now that there are vaccines and all adults have access to one that a mask mandate won't be necessary next school year. Um. Okay but kids won't be able to get vaccinated by August so logic fail....
I am pretty frustrated with this. Obviously I hope and pray transmission will be low enough by August that it won't matter but we can't really count on that happening and it's too soon to know. Now that they have said this though it's going to be really hard to go back on it. I just don't get it. I have so many questions and concerns. I feel like we have about another month of Covid precautions left in Texas (and they are already really bare) and then on June 1st the pandemic is over whether it really is or not. Right now cases have fallen off a cliff but it won't stay that way with our low vaccination and masking rates.

In Texas as well and feel the same. People are basically living life as though there is no pandemic. Most people are still masking in businesses that require it but many more are proudly defying the mask requirements and no one does anything about it. Why do I get that feeling that those who aren’t masking also didn’t get vaccinated? Our city announced masks were no longer required in city buildings so now we go to the library in the next city over to get our books.
I will also be surprised if our district requires masks in the fall. I hope the numbers support this. It feels like our numbers are so low right now but I went back and checked to see when the last time was that we had so few active cases and it was only Nov 20. Things got so out of hand after the holidays that now our numbers feel low, but in reality they aren’t!
cherry1111, after Abbott ended the mask mandate I was pleasantly surprised by how many people still wore a mask in businesses. That has stopped though. There are still people standing outside HEB and Target wiping down carts and asking others to wear masks but they are only getting 50% compliance. It has the potential to get back quickly but sure let's operate schools like we did in 2019. Sounds great.
ALSO. Speaking of school like 2019 please someone let me know the proper thread to complain about all of the freaking testing going on right now.

I think it can go here and I’m gonna join you. My 3rd grader goes into school next week for the very first time since March 2020, and the first thing they’re doing is administering the fucking PSSA tests. I’m absolutely furious.

Ugh that is not ok!!
For us DD had state sim tests last week, MAP in reading and science this week plus two regular tests, Math MAP next week plus regular tests, a break, then two state tests in early May. She’s done and over it and I don’t blame her. That’s way too much,

Our state now requires the school board hold a public hearing EVERY TIME someone requests a mask exemption or end to mask mandate in our district. Third hearing is this week. They say no EVERY time. We only have 5 weeks of school left! Our state legislature is the worst.

I feel this way about my school. We haven't had the quarantine issue come up yet, but I'm so irritated with my colleagues who are either anti-vax or simply dragging their feet on getting the shot. I know at least two people at my school who plan to get vaccinated, but "haven't gotten around to it yet," even though we have an employee clinic that makes it super easy, not to mention a city clinic with walk-in availability right now. It seems so irrepressible to our students and families! If our district ever drops masks for teachers, I wish it could be tied to vaccinations because that would probably make 90% of these holdouts go and get their shots today!

There is a rumor that the district might change the schedule AGAIN so the kids can go in person 4 days a week, for 2 1/2 hours each day. My thought is, we have less than 8 weeks left of the school year, stop making changes and focus on how you are getting these kids back full time in the fall.
@taratu, We have the same issue. My dad lives in a foreign country that is difficult to visit. I haven't seen him in 2 years. He is making this huge deal about visiting and spending time with the kids. When he does visit, he is not fit to actually look after them even though they are 10 and 8 and mostly independent. He isn't reliable enough to provide childcare or even to be counted on to pick them up from camp. When we are all at home, he spends all his time ignoring them and on his phone. Then he makes snarky comments because I told him we could take a weekend trip rather than a weeklong trip, and that wasn't enough time with the grandkids. eyeroll. The one time I asked him to watch the kids to pick DH up from the train station, he made snarky comments because we took too long to get back even though it was only an extra 30 minutes or something like that, and all he had to do was sit there and watch TV.
