Good morning!
I am thinking about buying a luxury brand purse and I'm looking for ideas of what style to get. I know posts like this come up occasionally and they always seem helpful. I feel a little bit like I have paralysis by analysis..and I'm starting to lose my own--vision on what I want and like b/c I'm just looking and looking, and so of course I thought a good idea is to ask others what THEY like lol. When I first started looking, I really, really wanted a Gucci belt bag, and recently I found one that I liked enough to put in my cart on Fashionphile. But now I'm starting to wonder if a belt bag is a "bad" purchase? Like just a trend that will be gone in a year and I'll be so sorry that I bought my first (only?) Gucci on a fanny pack and maybe I should have gone with a cross body bag or something.
I am an coach at college, so honestly right now my "purse" is the school issued backpack that the kids also get ::whomp whomp::
I would like to upgrade and separate myself with another type of bag if that helps, but it also needs to be functional.
Is this you only designer purse or are you starting a collection?
I have a few LV bags, but they're all classic styles that I could easily re-sell and/or pass down to my daughter. I have gotten more into crossbody styles, so I have 2 that can be crook of the arm or crossbody.
Personally, if I was looking at Gucci, I would look at their camera style bag. It's classic, has great resale, and I'm told holds a lot. I'm debating between that one and a YSL of a similar look.
I am not a fan of a flap opening, which is Chanel's basic design. I do like their wallet-on-chain though.
Ultimately though, if you love something, buy it. Belt bags are having a huge comeback and a lot wear them crossbody style.
What type of bag do you want? Tote, crossbody, satchel, etc? Or maybe start by asking what you want to carry in the bag and where do you want to bring the bag. Also, what is your budget? I agree that a belt bag seems a bit impractical unless that suits your lifestyle. I have two small Gucci bags (a disco and a marmont) and while I love them both, I only use them for very specific situations. My most-used bag is my Goyard St. Louis. I thought it was dumb and ugly when I first saw it, but over time it grew on me, and honestly it is super useful.

I’m no help because I am hesitating pulling the trigger on a LV bumbag.
On one hand, I know I would use it more than a similarly priced satchel I purchased 2 years ago (and only used a handful of times). I have used a smallish crossbody almost exclusively for 4 years. I love the minimal hands free style. But on the other hand, as you say, it seems faddish. And I don’t really switch out bags, so will it hold up to constant use.

This is super valid. I, personally, would not spend that kind of money on a fanny pack and would go for something more classic.
I’m basic and just want a Goyard tote. I tend to use larger bags a lot more often. I haven’t pulled the trigger yet but I’m thinking for my 45th birthday I might treat myself.

Do it. I have the St. Louis in PM size in green and I always come back to it. It is so easy to carry and so practical. It’s my most used bag for sure (and I have a LOT of bags). I kind of want a GM size in a different color just for fun.
I love my LV Pochette Metis. It is such an easy and functional bag. Can wear on the shoulder or crossbody. And I love that my phone can slip into the little pocket on the back. I was able to get one in a crème color which I don't think they do at the moment. There are lots of color options available, and of course monogram too. I'm not a tote girl and I don't think I would do a belt bag either.
The YSL Lou camera bag is a great purse.
This is fun, I'll be following this thread! I love purses.

I think you should decide basic parameters first. Every day bag vs going out bag, size, style (cross body or shoulder or tote, etc), class vs trendy + budget. I have a Prada Saffiano I love for my "every day" bag. It goes well with my work clothes but I can also wear it with more casual outfits. For something smaller and less formal, I've heard good things about the Gucci Soho bag. The LV Speedy is a classic and a pretty fun, functional size.
I have the classic LV Speedy Damier Azur because that's what was super popular 10 years ago when I got it. It was like the "gateway" into luxury bags, lol. I hardly ever use it anymore because, even though it comes with a shoulder strap, the bag is kind of bulky and awkward when you use it with a shoulder strap. I now hate bags that only have short handles, so if you prefer a should strap, keep that in mind. I wouldn't recommend the LV Speedy.
Last year I got myself the YSL Medium Envelope in Rouge Legion (https://www.ysl.com/en-us/shoulder-bags/envelope-medium-bag-in-mix-matelasse-grain-de-poudre-embossed-leather-600185BOW916475.html). I love it. I wanted a bag I could use for special occasions, and it's perfect. Also, this thing has some solid structure and weight to it. Like if I hit someone with it, it would leave a mark lol.
I want another YSL so badly, so my rec would be for a YSL bag.
I love bags and have a good sized collection. I used to own a Gucci belt bag, but found it too small for my needs and sold it to a friend. My main issue was I couldn’t fit a full-sized wallet in the bag along with my phone and keys.
My most used bags are ones that are scuff-friendly: the LV Estrella, the Gucci Marmont, and Burberry shoulder bag.
If you’re used to the amount of space in a backpack, the belt bag style might be too small. Have you looked at some of the backpack options from LV or Gucci? The Gucci men’s line has very nice backpack options.
If you’re looking for a more traditional purse, I’d stick to either the LV empriente line (the leather with embossed LV) or the Gucci Jackie 1961 line. Both don’t scream their brand name and have held up their resale value.
In terms of buying gently used items, I’ve had great success with FB groups over Fashionphile. I found Fashionphile to be more expensive than the trusted sellers on FB. I can send you a few names of trusted sellers on FB and IG if you’re interested.

I would like a cross body or satchel type bag that is for every day. I don't want a tote. I theoretically want to take the bag with me to work--but my work is both a cool and uncool place to be. It is completely athletic. As in I travel for my job, and then go to sport competitions. Which is cool but not "fashionable" It's all "practical" Which in some ways sucks joy from my life lol. Also we don't travel all the time. We have offices--and I want it for those days.
I want to carry my wallet, phone, and maybe a snack in it.

I REALLY want the YSL Medium Envelope in black. I'm so glad to hear you like it. I turn 40 next year and I think I'm going to go for it. I have a YSL quilted leather clutch in the sea salt color and I love it so much.

Ahhh, you'll love it!! I was NOT expecting it to be as stiff and...solid as it is. It is NOT a soft/flexible bag. I did go look at one in-store, but I didn't actually pick it up and touch it, so I was expecting a different feel for some reason.
That being said, it is an absolutely gorgeous bag. I don't get to use it very often these days, and sometimes I literally will just go take it out of the box so I can look at it, haha.

expatjen, I have looked at the Bloomsbury and I like that style a lot. I've had that kind of style in the past and used it frequently. I can tell that I can find it used for a good price too. Thank you. I'll add it to my potentials!
