My aunt is elderly, visually impaired, and lives alone in Western NY. Yesterday her beloved black lab dog bolted out the door and across the street into a field/woods. Aunt is beside herself frantic to get her back. Evidently some neighbors have been out looking, some on horseback. I’ve gotten on FB and posted in several neighborhood groups and lost pet groups. My brother posted on her area’s NextDoor. Neither of us lives close by but are equally desperate for them to be reunited.
My aunt is the type that would pay $$$ for professionals to use tracking dogs to track her down. I don’t have any other ideas of how else to help and am feeling helpless from so far away. Any other ideas or resources y’all know of to find a lost pet?
Has she been found? Is she micro chipped? I would call the local vets and animal shelters and talk to the neighbors who have property around the woods so people know to be looking out for her.
We had a stray show up in our yard a couple weeks ago. No collar so we found a vet after 6pm that would check for a chip and did the scan. Dog was chipped but not linked to a phone # but they were able to tell us which vet did the chipping. Figured we would have to hold onto the dog over night. I finally told DH to walk her towards the bike path and just stop anyone he saw as that was the way she wandered ove. He found the owner who was just chilling in his front yard waiting for someone to call him. He had no idea she had lost her collar or that her chip wasn't linked to his #.

This is my nightmare.
Have her put some clothes outside, possibly in your dogs crate to try to attract him. If someone can go sit in the woods for a few hours with his favorite food, that could also help.
Yelling his name may not work because the dog could be in survival mode.
Check with the local animal shelter or wild life shelter to see if there are live traps large enough to trap the dog.
Post fliers and alert vets and animals shelters. Give them copies of the fliers.
Miracle of miracles, my aunt’s dog was found yesterday!! She showed up in a driveway of a house a quarter mile down the road. The neighbor recognized her as the missing dog and took her back to my aunt first thing in the morning. My aunt is SO relieved (and the rest of us too).
