Both Niagara Falls and northeast Ohio are about a 7 and a half hour drive from greater NYC, just in slightly different directions.
The Adirondacks are really pretty (Lake George, Lake Placid, Lake Champlain, etc). I also love Cape Cod. I've heard good things about the Catskills, but don't have any personal experience.
My family has made it in under 7 coming from central NJ. I’ll ask my brother when I get home, he just drove back with a friend on Tuesday from Buffalo.
Central Jersey is about 2 hours away from where CloudBee lives.

She mentioned Ohio in her post which is why I suggested it. NYC metro is enormous, as you know.

Huh? Yes, I know she mentioned Ohio, that is why I pointed out that the drive from where she lives to NE Ohio is a similar distance as the drive to Niagara Falls. Obviously NYC metro area is enormous, that's why driving from Central Jersey is irrelevant to her question.

I didn't know where her starting point is. WNY can be under 6 in you start in Rockland County or over 7 if you start in Suffolk county.
It was a suggestion given I don't know exactly where she lives in the NYC metro but I guess you do know her location.
Obviously Cloud Bee will do her own research and choose a destination.
I was going to suggest the Jersey Shore, but apparently PPs said that’s sold out. I live on the Northern edge of the Jersey shore and it’s not the bar/crazy boardwalk scene where I am. It’s nice and relaxing. And there are a decent number of smaller museums (I run one!). Definitely a place to keep in mind.
Hyatt has a really nice resort on a tributary to the Chesapeake. We’ve gone twice and enjoyed ourselves. It was super crowded this past week when we were there, but still nice. There’s enough to do at the resort for a couple days and you’re close-ish to St Michael’s and can of course charter stuff on the actual bay. It’s about 2 hours from Philly so prob 4 hours from NY.

Ooh, can you share some museums? Indoor rhings are nice with the heat we've been getting this summer!
We love Cape Cod so I'd definitely look into that. We've stayed in Sandwich and I think it's less popular with families so might be easier to get a hotel. So much to do there! We have a vacation place in the Poconos and love it for families.

Happy to! My recs skew towards history museums as that’s the genre I work in and I have connections to many of them, but there are a few non-history ones here as well! These are just the ones I know close to the shore in the Monmouth County area (and some slightly south). I’m certain there are a ton of other institutions I’m missing.
The Historic Village at Allaire (mostly open weekends due to budget cuts, but will be adding some Fridays soon) www.Allairevillage.org
Longstreet Farm a working 1890s farm within Holmdel Park, the farmhouse is temporarily closed for roofing repairs but should be reopening soon. www.monmouthcountyparks.com/page.aspx?Id=2530
Monmouth County Historical Society has a main museum in Freehold, but also operates several historic homes throughout Monmouth County www.monmouthhistory.org. I haven’t been to all of them, but those I’ve been to have been really cool!
Batsto Village: I haven’t personally been, but it’s supposed to be fun, too. I’m not 100% sure what their current operating capacity is. batstovillage.org
Ocean County Historical Society: I haven’t been, but I have met members of their board of trustees and they sound like they have some really cool stuff going on www.oceancountyhistory.org

Thank you! I have not ever been to any of the historical societies. I would not have thought of that! We must live in the same general area. Great spot for you as a History pro! We love Allaire and just started visiting last year. Touring the village is amazing. We used to go to the wonder wing all the time when my son was little! Longstreet has been another important place for us. We still always stop by even just to see the cats. ❤
I've never heard of Batsto. I will look into that too! My son was in 4th grade this year and we had been looking forward to this year and the free National Parks pass, but we didn't get to do any of it.

Glad to help! Batsto is the same era as Allaire and was also an iron-producing company town. I don’t know how much they have going on, but I know at the very least that tours of their owner’s mansion are offered on Wednesday and Sunday. Allaire and Batsto were supposed to be sister organizations dating back to our founding in the 50s, but that never got off the ground.

This looks gorgeous, and is a location I would have overlooked while browsing the Hyatt website. Thank you for the link!
It’s a really pretty place! OHHHH also YOU CAN BRING YOUR DOG!!!!! All dogs! Even big ones!
It’s def. family oriented, multiple pools and hot tubs, big water slide, mini golf, activities for kids, fire pits and s’mores….the food is pretty good too! It’s set up a lot like a resort in Mexico or Carribean. There’s also a cute little beach and you can rent paddle boards/kayaks etc. to use in nice calm water.
It’s probably a little too far, but what about Put-in-Bay or Kelley’s Island on Lake Erie in Ohio? You take the ferry over and can go exploring. You can see Canada from Perry’s Monument. Cedar Point is nearby, and you could hit the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame as you pass Cleveland.

Greenport, NY. It's the eastern end of Long Island on the North Fork (so not Hamptons). The town itself is really cute and lots of outdoor activities - beach, carousel, roller skating, boat tours, etc. Take the ferry to Shelter Island and hike around. 20 mins west there are a bunch of family-friendly vineyards and breweries with live music, lawn games, hedge maze, petting zoo, hayride, etc. There's a huge water park another 20 mins west. Easy drive or ferry to the Hamptons to check out what's down there (I don't know anything about the Hamptons, but lived on the North Fork for a year and still spend a ton of time there as my ILs have a house).
ETA: Obviously there's tons of beaches - the Sound, the bay, the ocean, but also most of the hotels in Greenport have pools too.

I agree with Charlottesville Annapolis, MD maybe together with St. Michael's MD Harpers Ferry and staying at the Bavarian Inn (look that up, neat place)
