Jovenel Moïse, Haiti's embattled president who thrust the country into deeper political turmoil during his tumultuous one term in office, was assassinated overnight at his private residence, according to the country's acting prime minister.
The first lady was wounded by a bullet and is receiving care, he added.
There are also rumours that 'people speaking Spanish' were involved.
CARICOM (the Caribbean Community) has been involved in trying to maintain peace IN Haiti over the years. There has been a lot of violence and political upheaval going on over the last year or so. I do not really understand enough to say whether the accusations against him were justified; but even if they were, assassinating him will not led to peace.
Not much new information today. I cannot believe that the assassination of the leader of a country on our very continent is buried like 10 stories down on my news app.
“Authorities say the gunmen responsible for Moïse's killing were likely mercenaries. They have not officially released names of suspects involved in the attack.
Interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph also described some of them as "Spanish speaking." There are other reports that the gunmen also spoke English. Haiti's primary languages are French and Creole.
Bocchit Edmond, the Haitian ambassador to the United States, said the attackers posed as agents of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, likely gaining entry to Moïse's home by using that identity.”

I’m not super familiar with this stuff but just saying they’re from the US DEA the guards let him in the house or are they saying they stormed the place posing? This is really wild and unsettling.
"At least one of the men arrested in connection to the assassination by Haitian authorities previously worked as an informant for the US Drug Enforcement Administration, the DEA said in a statement in response to CNN."
"Other suspects also had US ties, including working as informants for the FBI, the people briefed on the matter said. The FBI said in response to CNN’s reporting that it doesn’t comment on informants, except to say that it uses “lawful sources to collect intelligence” as part of its investigations."

I have been following this so closely. The latest updates are crazy. Like, some random Haitian-American doctor orchestrated this? How much should we believe anything being shared anyway?

So… more fruit of the US war on drugs then?
Also, the fact that we assign DEA agents to Haiti (and other countries I assume) is colonial af.

At this point I don't know what to think. But I'm also assuming we're not getting the full story right now.

I’m not saying the US itself is involved beyond the FL cell. Just speculating that this is some unintended, unforeseen fallout from a butterfly moving its wing in the war on drugs.

I didn't think you were. I'm just pointing out the our media is going to be exceptionally biased, and there's likely going to be assumptions made by our press or things that are glossed over because of it. Whether that means that the US govt is partially to blame because we had people in our midst who have been radicalized and we turned a blind eye, or even continued to give them access to information and influence, or because our war on drugs has been such a mind boggling failure and this is one more consequence of such an unmitigated disaster.

radicalized against what/whom? Just for clarity because it’s interesting. Or generally radicalized?

Generally radicalized, I have no insight into their motives. But I feel like if you're signing up for a team that is going to assassinate someone, you qualify as being radicalized.
Haiti’s chief prosecutor is seeking charges against Prime Minister Ariel Henry in relation to the July assassination of President Jovenel Moise.
Bed-Ford Claude, the Port-au-Prince government commissioner, the equivalent of a federal prosecutor, on Tuesday asked the judge investigating the killing to charge Henry with involvement in the case over alleged phone calls Henry made with one of the main suspects.
Claude also requested that Henry be barred from leaving Haiti “due to the gravity of the facts exposed”.
