.rubytue , probably a good call to skip Yellowstone. It's been INSANELY crowded this year. We were just in Red Lodge and didn't even go into the park because we saw pictures of lines of cars waiting to get in.
This makes me nervous for when we go to Acadia in a few weeks. I guess we’ll have to just get to our hiking spots by 8.
We were able to snag a camping site in the park for 3 nights, which I’m really excited about.
I heard an NPR story on Arches national park, and how you have to get in line by like 7am to get into the park that day. National parks this summer sounds insane.
Pixy's story also reminds me of just in general when we are having hiring conversations and talk about how green some candidates are. Especially right out of college candidates. And especially when the jobs are entry level.
I mean, how the fuck do you get experience unless someone just hires you? Every single one of us had to be hired by someone at some point! It drives me insane. Yes they are inexperienced because they LITERALLY JUST GRADUATED. Omg it makes me want to stab people lol.
Same for supervising. I got my first supervisorial role by....never supervising before. You can train people how to supervise pretty darn easily. There are a ton of resources on the topic.
I applied for a entry level supervisor job and was immediately rejected because I don't have supervisory experience. Every time this happens I just want to fucking scream.
Not related, I started hormonal birth control to help mitigate perimenopause systems, and I'm so nauseous all the time. I'm trying to wait it out to see if the symptoms quit, but the outlook is looking pretty grim.
this is so goddamn frustrating. And I've talked to other hiring managers about this issue, and it seems so widespread that we start expecting people to do a job before we give them a job, and then the promotion and raise comes after you've been DOING the thing for months already.
Which makes it really really hard to get a job DOING that thing until you've already been doing the thing. But if you're in a well defined position that doesn't allow for doing "extra" duties, how the hell do you do that?
DH smoked a pork butt on our charcoal grill yesterday, and while it was good, it wasn't fall-apart tender. He's still getting the hang of the whole thing (maintaining proper heat, etc) and I can tell it's bugging him that it wasn't better. I'm trying to find him resources that he can use to help his smoking game.
OMG, my DH went through the same thing. He was so irritated that there was a learning curve to smoking, lol.
You can get a membership to the site, I think, but there is free access to some parts. I found a ton of great recommendations there for mods to my DH's Weber Smoky Mountain smoker that make it easier to operate (like rolling casters that lock so it's easy to move, a hinge for the lid, etc.).
Does your DH have a wireless thermometer? On recommendation/reviews from that site, I got my DH a Fireboard for Christmas one year. It has a Bluetooth connection and an app, and so when he's smoking he can see the internal temp of the meat and the temp of the smoker on his phone and track progress, or see when he needs to refresh the fuel to keep the temp right. I think that particular thermometer also has a fan kit, where you can set alerts if the temp falls and the fan will kick on to raise the temp. Fair warning, it's pricey, but there are other options. My DH doesn't have many hobbies and he uses his smoker a lot, so I tend to splurge on the mods and accessories.

RE: the supervisory loop, it's frustrating and insane. I gave up after a half decade of hearing, "you haven't had the job, so you can't get the job". There are 100+ candidates for these positions, and I've been saying for forever that you almost need a patron, someone to "sponsor" you (a sitting person in an actual supervisory position) in order to make the leap. We have a lot of opportunity for project and program management, but to actually translate that into a "real" supervisory position is very hard.

Thanks! I'll look into that site. He did get a thermometer that does all that stuff - just no app or fan thing. We are using a cast iron Charbroil charcoal grill (CB940X) that doubles as a smoker (most of the men in my family have and use the same thing). It's big, so I think it would have been better for him to use the smaller smoker since he wasn't doing a ton of meat. But I'll definitely take a look at that site to see if they have any good ideas.
Does your job currently allow you to volunteer to lead any projects and "supervise" the efforts of the project team? That is often how we get people to make the leap from individual contributor to manager at our company. We allow project leadership to count toward supervisory experience to help with internal mobility.
No, even though I am project lead on a bunch of stuff and I mentioned that experience in my cover letter. This was a job outside of my company, though. It's been made clear to me both verbally and in writing that my current job could give two shits about internal mobility.
Does your resume include a bullet that says something like "Supervise departmental and cross-departmental teams to [insert projects here]"? Use the word and its synonyms as much as possible.
Do you ever conduct or participate in performance reviews or project reviews? Manage staff that way? You have to beat the bots that scan resumes. I was ignored for a particular role until I changed my "member of management team" to "member of senior management team." I was, it wasn't a lie, but management WAS senior management at my old org so it didn't occur to me to specify.
Eta: and it is utter bullshit that they won't give you the experience to get the experience. Who knows better how not to be a shitty supervisor than someone who has been shittily supervised?

There's probably a plethora of Facebook pages for his type of grill. We have a Big Green Egg and I know there are several pages about cooking.

I am sick of gunfire in my neighborhood. A few weeks ago there was over 30 shots fired. Then last night random houses were hit. They never find the shooters. I am just sick of it.
It always comes from the same area (basically this park where 50 plus people hang out at all hours of the night). I have no idea what to do about it but I feel like the answer can't just be nothing (which is what the answer has been since I moved here in 2014).
I am already feeling panicked that summer feels almost over ugh.
This summer especially has been so happy and carefree. I don't want it to end. I know it isn't the end of summer. I know it is only July. But now I am feeling even more pressure to do all the things!
I was so ready to plan my hot vax summer and now I'm like "fuck it, it's too hot." Hot vax autumn it shall be!
Plus, I am voluntarily social distancing myself for 2.5 weeks during the Olympics and that gives us fewer weekends to do fun stuff.

My neighborhood is the same and I feel the same . We have called the cops a few times when they were close (you could hear the bullets whiz by). But by the time they get there, the shooters are long gone. Some people also have these terrible cars that have exhaust systems that sound like gunshots. I have learned the difference, which is really sad.
wildrice , we watched it too and it was sad. But I am just furious right now with the racist english fans. You know if they had won, the black players would have been heroes. But because they lost, they are spewing their racist hate all over the place.
Yes, this is such bullshit. I am glad it seems to be a minority of people who feel that way, but it is ridiculous that there is anyone at all making those sorts of comments.

That sucks... sorry.
We do give preference to internals with that experience and don't consider externals without supervisory experience if the job requires it for success. That is because we have first-hand account of someone's potential to lead based on their project leadership experience. Have you considered a lateral to a larger organization where the mobility options may be greater?
In the meantime, middle fingers to your current company.
Editing to add for the general feedback - if a company is a federal contractor, defining clear "minimum qualifications" thresholds and sticking to them is important. It is a huge effort to try to define more flexible entrance criteria to a job if you have hundreds of applicants and need some sort of cutoff to define who meets minimum as well as who would be best. And it is sooooo subjective that it is infuriating. We have had an endeavor to standardize jobs across our multiple business units and getting agreement from the leaders of the functions on what is really required to do the job is like pulling teeth - cat teeth after first herding them. It's ridiculous.
To support diversity efforts in our higher level positions, we added the option to allow internal applicants to have relaxed experience requirements compared to external applicants to support our DEI efforts provided some internal performance criteria had been met. It takes a huge investment of time to make that consistent across thousands of job codes/descriptions/departments. Most companies don't bother trying because it is an expensive time commitment/endeavor. And we just created a career center to help advise employees on the types of moves they can make to support their long term goals. After 15 years of recommending it!
Second edit - to the idea that it's easy to train supervisors - that is easier said than done in a flatter organization. A very common failure by organizations is to promote someone with strong technical competence but low emotional intelligence or ability to engage and lead others. Some of that is instinctual. And if you only have staff-manager-director-vp-big boss, there is no room for that task manager level. The old adage is that people join organizations and leave supervisors. Supervisor failure is one of the biggest reasons for turnover ever. So seriously considering who is going to be in that supervisory role is crucial.
pixy0stix, that is SO frustrating. I'm sorry to hear it. You do a great job supervising this board- that should definitely qualify you. ;-)
taratru, is this your move to Dubai? How exciting!! But, yes, I understand how you feel. It's quite a transition, but I hope it goes really well for you. i forget- is this a permanent move, or time limited? Good luck!
It would be bad form to reply to an ad that says "send your salary requirements" with "Per the law enacted in January, you need to provide the salary range and benefits in your job listing" wouldn't it?

We leave for vacation for our ten year anniversary on Wed and I am so excited to get Out of my city and state! I have so much to do before then though.
Then when we return I only have two weeks left of summer break and they are filled with medical appointments and getting our patio replaced so not exactly relaxing. Plus planning for school. I can’t do that yet bc we haven’t gotten the master schedule 😑 This summer has flown by!

We’ve had the best luck smoking it on the grill until it hits 165° then wrapping it in foil and putting it in an (cold) oven or cooler until it hits 200°.
Also highly recommend the snake method for the coals.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

H just got a new charcoal grill to add to our collection. He spends a lot of time watching youtube videos of people using his exact grills and searching instagram for hashtags to follow other people with the same models. It helps him figure out of the nuances of a new grill because all the brands are all slightly different.
I'm crashing my BFFs family vacation later this summer! I haven't seen her in 3 years, I think. We were going to take a trip last year but lolz. She'll just have finished treatment and one of her sisters can't go so I'm taking her place. They rented a beautiful Airbnb in West Point, VA. I really like her parents and sister that is going. I'm so happy that I'll be able to see her soon.

Yup, and yet getting on twitter this morning was great because there is a HUGE backlash right now and the young men have all posted amazing things to twitter and Insta, and people are retweeting it more than anything that the racists are tweeting. Even the Sun, which is a piece of filth, is seeing that racism isn't supported by the majority and are backtracking. I think all of this is starting to put the gov't and their racist policies under scrutiny in a way that wasn't before and it's going to hurt them. I certainly hope so!
We aren’t even into two full weeks of summer yet, why is everyone rushing for fall. I’m looking at you Target.
My favorite time of year is when Target brings out the "dorm organization" supplies, though.
I almost bought a shower caddy yesterday, because it’s sort of a longer shape with a handle. I don’t know what I would’ve done with it, but I still wanted it really bad!
As we get closer to moving, I find myself getting more and more "what the fuck are we doing?" about it. I know that's normal, but sweet Jesus, what we are doing *is* a little crazy.
Relatedly, H wants to spend our last few days here at his mom's or dad's. I had to put my foot down on that. No sir. I want to be where we've been for almost 2 decades. I want to drive the normal route to the airport. I want to sleep in my own bed the night before. That's probably going to cost some time and money, but it's what I need.
Safe travels!!! Do you have a direct flight to Dubai? Are you flying Emirates?
I'll be making my way back to the desert (I live in Doha) at the end of this month. It's going to be hot! And while this might seem crazy, we did it 11 years ago and I have no regrets! I do remember the last few days being a bit crazy though - so definitely being at home will be most comforting!
I feel all these posts about the lack of supervisory experience in holding you back. I am in the same frustrating boat.
I now bring it up to my manager when we have our performance check-ins: "You can't hold something against me if you never give me the opportunity to do it". I will say it over and over until I die.

Totally not the point - but Emirates is the most amazing airline.
