As we get closer to moving, I find myself getting more and more "what the fuck are we doing?" about it. I know that's normal, but sweet Jesus, what we are doing *is* a little crazy.
Relatedly, H wants to spend our last few days here at his mom's or dad's. I had to put my foot down on that. No sir. I want to be where we've been for almost 2 decades. I want to drive the normal route to the airport. I want to sleep in my own bed the night before. That's probably going to cost some time and money, but it's what I need.
Safe travels!!! Do you have a direct flight to Dubai? Are you flying Emirates?
I'll be making my way back to the desert (I live in Doha) at the end of this month. It's going to be hot! And while this might seem crazy, we did it 11 years ago and I have no regrets! I do remember the last few days being a bit crazy though - so definitely being at home will be most comforting!
We have a flight to Boston on Jet Blue, then direct to Dubai on Emirates. The second leg is overnight, so I'm glad for that, and we arrive at 7:30pm, so it'll be fine to just go to bed after.
The amount of work/things to think about making this initial move is insane. There's no way I'm coming back anytime soon because doing this again makes me want to throw things!

Totally not the point - but Emirates is the most amazing airline.
100% agree! I fly Qatar Airways now since I live in Doha, but pre-blockade we flew Emirates all the time and they were the BEST! Their business class is fantastic, and once we got upgraded to First - seriously the best flight ever!

It is definitely overwhelming! And eventually, you'll get used to flying back and forth, ha ha. But once you're on the plane, you can just relax :-)
Are they flying you business class on Emirates? The overnight leg is not bad at all - depending on how I feel, I usually eat dinner and then sleep. Or if I'm exhausted, I skip dinner altogether :-P
DH smoked a pork butt on our charcoal grill yesterday, and while it was good, it wasn't fall-apart tender. He's still getting the hang of the whole thing (maintaining proper heat, etc) and I can tell it's bugging him that it wasn't better. I'm trying to find him resources that he can use to help his smoking game.
Does he have an instant read thermometer? For a pork shoulder/butt, if you want it to be pull apart tender, any where between 195 and 205 degrees the meat should be "probe tender", so while your taking the temp, the probe should slide in and out like butter. I also like to rest my pork shoulder for at least an hour wrapped in a towel inside of a cooler, then use some bear claws to shred it.

we need bear claws...
Also just as a general handy note - meat will stay HOT in a cooler wrapped in towels for a long ass time. (uhh, cooler wrapped in FOIL, wrapped in towels) this is how we handle the meats for our big summer bbq every year. H smokes it overnight so it's done first thing in the morning and then it just holds in the cooler until it's party food time so there's never any "oh no, it's time to eat and this butt is hanging!!" When we start pulling it it's still too hot to touch comfortably. We were monitoring with a thermometer the first time we did this so as not to poison our guests, and it never even came close to dropping out of safe hot food temps.

Man...now I'm hungry.
I'm actually looking in to getting some insulated rubber gloves as well for pulling, like I'm a Pitmaster or something LOL
And yes, you definitely want something between the meat and the towel, that's an important step I forgot to include. Sometimes I actually wrap my meat while it's cooking. My H doesn't like the bark as much as I do, so I will sometimes wrap at about 165 IT and then let it ride until the desired tenderness. I once had a butt stall for SIX HOURS, and wrapping it generally prevents the stall.
I was actually going to smoke a couple of London Broils for dinner tonight but got lazy and have it going in the Sous Vide now.

This is a great tip. I think he was trying for the 'low and slow' thing, and didn't wrap/let sit after pulling it off the grill. I guess he just needs to get up earlier next time! LOL

Or townhouse hits the market for real on Friday. But it’s in the MLS as “coming soon” as of 8am and we already one showing scheduled. I know, it’s just one, but not even full active yet. 🤞 I need this place closed by Aug 30.

After flying them on their A380 from NY to Dubai a few years ago, H and I may have done some brainstorming on our next vacation based on where we could fly Emirates.

H also wraps ours for a couple of hours after taking it off the smoker. He always starts it the night before so there is time to do this.

Psh. I wish. We are still only teachers! No business class for us.

Oh the A380 is my favorite plane!!!! It’s the best way to fly for real!

If you ever get the chance to fly biz class, do it! Emirates economy is great too though. I fly economy on Qatar Airways & it’s really good. Free alcohol & the food is decent, also all the movies/tv shows you could want!
I like to set my food preference to Asian Veg - if you love Indian food, it usually ends up being paneer, Chana masala, etc :-)

Dermatologist wanted a mole removed last week and I HATE WAITING for biopsy results which probably won’t be in for another week. I’ve had a couple done before and they’ve been fine but I get so anxious waiting for test results.

We accepted an offer on our house last July 4th. We closed December 9th. 😭

I got my colon cancer test results back this morning. All clear. Would like to give a plug for Cologuard--weird to do, but easy, and fast communication; they said it could take up to 2 weeks and it took 6 days.
I spent some time this morning updating my news subscriptions. Holy shit some of them are so freaking expensive. No wonder people get their news just from social media.
Most of our local papers are owned by Gannett. I rearranged who I was subscribing too so I could get promotional deals. Otherwise I was paying $15 to $20 a month for each news site. And this is for local news. I pay less for the NYTimes. Absolute insanity.

Wonderful news! Was it routine or a particular concern?

I had BRCA testing done at the beginning of June, and my results have been done and just pending doctor review since June 21. The more time passes the more anxious I'm getting about it. No one has been able to look at my results and call me for 3+ weeks?

I am so sorry you are stressed and waiting. That is unacceptable! You should definitely call your doctor.

We used to have a subscription to our local paper, in addition to the NYTimes and Washington Post, but I couldn’t justify spending the $15 monthly. I had mainly subscribed to keep an eye on local Covid news, but after things reopened I found myself scanning headlines more than reading articles. I think we’re paying about $10 a month for the NYTimes and $23 for a year of the Washington Post.
Also, I’m disappointed that I had to go back recently to online only access to the Times. I used to get the paper on Sundays and devour it. After a many year break I tried getting it on Sundays again and it was a chore to get through. I’m hoping that it’s just this point of time in my life where relaxing with the paper on a Sunday is too far down the list of things I should or even want to do and that someday I’ll enjoy that again.
Ugh… I have to make a decision on how many days I want to commute this week. If we pick 1 or 2, we give up our office. Which is reasonable, but make the decision so hard because they want tell us the other option. And after 20 years, I just got my first office with natural light in July 2019. Before that, I was in a cube so dark I had to file a reasonable accommodation to get enough light to function. But, if it’s one day a week… maybe I can live with the unknown.
OTOH, dude, I’m a bureaucrat. I like clear policies and procedures. I thrive on having things spelled out.
I cut my left index finger on July 3rd and had to get 5 stitches. Urgent care used lidocaine to numb the area and it was insanely painful. Getting the stitches out hurt enough to bring tears. My finger is still swollen and numb well beyond the sutures. I'm pretty sure that it's because of the nerve damage from the car accident. This isn't the first time I've had stitches in my hands/fingers so I know it's different. FML They referred me to a hand specialist.

I was randomly looking at the website for the venue for my sister's wedding next year. They have separate tabs to illustrate their facilities for Indian weddings and Jewish weddings and their understanding of the different traditions and requirements, including special packages and catering. I just thought that was cool.
