Follow up question - how did you teach your kid to wipe? I tried to show DS1 (6) how to reach around behind him, but I swear his arms just aren't long enough. He can kind of do it, but not well.
5, and I just demonstrated enough times, I guess. E1 will be 6 tomorrow and I would say that I haven't found skid marks in his underwear in the last few months. He knows if he doesn't wipe well, he'll get an itchy booty.
How good is your daughter at wiping after going pee?
Judging by the amount of pee I wipe off the seat, I’m guessing not good. DD is nearly 10. We were still helping her wipe #2 a year ago. I’m not proud. Potty training was our biggest struggle with her.
ETA: DS (3.5) attempts wiping better than DD did at age 7.
I was just wondering this. And I am not pleased with the results of the poll 🤣😢
DS1 turned 6 in April and we are not even kinda close. I mean, I suppose he has wiped on his own at school once or twice in the last year since nobody in public schools is wiping his butt, but he does not do even a decent job at home. My best friend suggested I have him reach between his legs, so I'm going to try that with him tomorrow.

I'm just... so tired of wiping his butt.
DS1 is 6.5yo. We started with hand over hand to teach. He’s been wiping for months now, maybe closer to a year…but I always do a follow up to make sure he’s really clean. He’s does an ok job but sometimes he could wipe much better.
Montessori preschool was a big help with both kids' wiping prowess (they had it down by 4yo). Mine also got used to using bidets fairly early, which definitely leads to cleaner butts than toilet paper alone.

Both my kids were/are in Montessori, but neither of them poops at school very often. They do teach them for sure, but the lack of consistency in going at school did not benefit us in that area.

Their primary teachers had been with that school for 32 and 35 years when my rising 9th grader started (11 years ago)- AND THEY'RE STILL THERE. I imagine they were totally over wiping butts by the time my kids started, LOL.

Installing a bidet in the bathroom the kids use is on my to-do list.
Definitely try through the legs. My DD stands up to wipe her butt. Whatever works, kid.
I think using wet wipes (and throwing them in the trash) helped her a lot. She’s also a pretty clean pooper, so she’s not dealing with a lot of clean-up. But it still took a long time to get there. She’s 8 now and her undies are mostly clean all the time.
Somehow DS has been pretty good since day 1 (he started pooping on the potty on his 4th bday). Perhaps my reward for him being a pain in the ass to potty train.

This takes me back to the first year of school when my son would whisper to me at the end of the school day “Mommy, I pooed today so can you wipe me when we get home?” 🤦♀️😩. DS2 starts school in August so I think this will be a repeat. In fairness to them, it’s super hard to wipe with the ultra cheap toilet paper at school and public restrooms.

DD is 6 and I’d say her butt wiping game has gotten strong over the last year. She knows now to wipe till “clean” in the back and knows she doesn’t like having damp undies if she doesn’t wipe her pee well, so I see her making sure she’s really dry.
We started "wipe your own butt" boot camp with 1.0 after I got pregnant with 2.0 so he was...a few months past 5? He had a hard time getting himself clean at first (more like he was rushing to get back to whatever he was doing) but after learning how his little butt feels when he doesn't wipe properly he got a LOT better.
DS was good by 4 thanks to daycare's help. Yall still wiping butts at 8 are crazy. I'm pretty sure I was wiping my little brother's butt when I was 8.
Some kids physically can’t do it at 3-7. This is unnecessary.
For my son who has fine motor delays, the act of tearing, folding, etc was impossible until he matured and worked on it in OT for a while. I just kept doing hand over hand and talking through it and would “check” with a baby wipe and show him it was clean or not and wipe again as needed. Eventually we worked to the point where I just checked at age 5 and change - he knew his job was to wipe well and mine was to check and help if he didn’t get it all. At 6, he’s good with TP but prefers to also use a wipe. I bet he’d love a bidet!
We set a deal up where he couldn’t call me to wipe him until after he tried - my “job” was to check. DD (3.5) is the opposite and just started wiping her own poop with basically no prompting immediately after training and does a good job. Pee is another story. My little honey badger does.not.want.to.stop. doing whatever she is doing and waits til the last second and definitely has the occasional drips/leaks.
