General Milley feared Trump would attempt a military coup

The top US military officer, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Mark Milley, was so shaken that then-President Donald Trump and his allies might attempt a coup or take other dangerous or illegal measures after the November election that Milley and other top officials informally planned for different ways to stop Trump, according to excerpts of an upcoming book obtained by CNN.

The book, from Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post reporters Carol Leonnig and Philip Rucker, describes how Milley and the other Joint Chiefs discussed a plan to resign, one-by-one, rather than carry out orders from Trump that they considered to be illegal, dangerous or ill-advised.

Milley viewed Trump as "the classic authoritarian leader with nothing to lose," the authors write, and he saw parallels between Adolf Hitler's rhetoric as a victim and savior and Trump's false claims of election fraud.

"This is a Reichstag moment," Milley told aides, according to the book. "The gospel of the Führer."

Ahead of a November pro-Trump "Million MAGA March" to protest the election results, Milley told aides he feared it "could be the modern American equivalent of 'brownshirts in the streets,'" referring to the pro-Nazi militia that fueled Hitler's rise to power.

I’ve read a few clips from this book on social media - one in particular makes me think Ivanka is the leaker because it just talked about how disturbed she was by the Jan 6 insurrection and how hard she tried to talk her father into calling off his rioting supporters. Fuck off, Ivanka.

I get this and completely agree in almost every situation.  But... Milley seemed to be doing a lot out of the public eye to make sure a coup didn't happen.  He did publicly denounce his participation in the bible photo op right after it happened.  The conversations he had to protect our military could on happen if Milley remained in his position.  Going public, resigning, pissing off Trump enough for him to replace Milley would have left the military wide open for a coup.

I just can’t believe how close we were to an actual legitimate coup. I knew all the rhetoric was dangerous and we saw what happened Jan 6. But these behind the scenes details are horrifying.

While I share the emotions, I think they were saying things behind doors because of national security.

If the military leaders are conspiring to keep the sitting Commander In Chief in check, that signals incredible national instability ripe for another nation to attack us. Imagine the 9/11 style strikes that could have been ordered if terrorists, Putin, Kim, or others realized how deeply divided the leaders of our military were from the commander in chief, including how distracted they all were already?
