People are pissing me off. Delta is spreading unabated in unvaccinated communities, and even in less-vaccinated communities within highly-vaccinated areas (Exhibit A - my neighborhood plus the surrounding ones). And we still have asshole parents around here yelling about UNMASK THE CHILDREN!!!! Shut the fuck up. If my kids need to wear masks to be able to go to school five days a week, they'll fucking wear masks. With vaccinations for under 12 not likely to happen until winter, masks are the best tool we have for school-age kids.
I feel you. I read the update for our school system about masking - and none of it took delta into account. I am glad that we had the means to keep BB in private K for the upcoming school year. Smaller class size and the rules are different for childcare centers than there are for public schools. So I am hopeful that masking will remain for the 21-22 school year until we know more or kids can be vaccinated.
We did have to remind BB the importance of masking while at school - she switched classes in July and it seems like this room isn't as on the ball as her previous one. Since she hates getting the covid test (either nasal or saliva, which I had to go out of my way to get last week and use connections) we told her she has a better chance of not needing another one if she keeps her mask on. Let's see if that helps.
I wasn't really worried about school last year. By the time it actually started we had pretty good data that masks and distancing really helped to make schools a fairly low risk place to be. It worked great all year and the kids didn't really complain. Now however we have a way more contagious variant and asshole governors that have dictated that schools can't require masks. It's going to go just GREAT. I am way more nervous this year. I do know all the data says that if (when) my child gets Covid that she shouldn't be at any great risk but it's still hard to swallow the pill that my state is going to make all kids under the age of 12 a sitting duck. If this is now a pandemic of the unvaccinated then it's only a matter of time. It doesn't matter that there will be a vaccine available in the winter because school starts in a month. It will be too late.

Just needed to vent this morning.
You’d be furious to read how many teachers of young kids in my teacher FB group are both unvaccinated and pushing hard for mask free schools 😡

I don't doubt it. They themselves just don't want to wear masks, which, I get it, but then they should be vaccinated. Many of DH's colleagues are unvaccinated. Many are women in their 40s and under who are susceptible to misinformation (crazy to believe, but it's true). His colleague who lives around the corner from us and has been our date night babysitter won't get vaccinated. Sucks for us but I'm not playing around with this. My kids need summer camp childcare and I can't be guaranteed that everyone they come across is fully vaccinated, but DH and I also have to work. We are not voluntarily exposing our kids to unvaccinated adults. Fuck that noise.

Exactly. They did not like it when I suggested that parents be allowed to say they did not want an unvaccinated teacher for their child 😂

It's so funny how drastically different attitudes have been across the country. I don't know about for the Fall, but this past Spring the teachers unions where I live wanted teachers to get priority vaccinations but also were arguing to keep all kids virtual.

I’m fully vaccinated and have had covid the last week. All four of us have. My kids are only indoors with my vaccinated parents, who were also sick all last week, and my sister and her fully vax family of four. She’s positive but asymptomatic (but had allergies the week before that I suspect was covid).
This has been a shitty week. The “mild” case still really sucks. The fatigue is immense. Cough, congestion, asthma issues for me.I count my blessings we are vaccinated and didn’t get the full brunt of it.
We have been SO vigilant. Nothing indoors..limited outdoors, and one outdoor pool friend is also positive from us. Outdoor effing transmission. My zip code is 70% vax, county is 50. We are getting caught in the MO delta spread.
I’m feeling better today, The kids seemed perked up yesterday, but I spent Saturday into Sunday watching my 11.5 yo’s pulse ox even more closely as his cough deepened and levels went down to 96. DH had a rough run of coughing yesterday that just wore him out. He said he felt better at bedtime last night.
Fully vaccinated. Outdoor only, and very, very limited at that. My vaccinated family gave it to my unvaccinated 7 & 11 yo. They were symptomatic but blamed allergies and didn’t tell me.
Vaccinated folks, allergy symptoms should get swabbed.
I think I’m currently in the grieving phase of all of this. And angry. And exhausted. Because literally almost no one is wearing masks around here, kids or adults, we’ve had to miss so many opportunities that I would have been OK with had masks been required. I worry that this is starting to impact my kids’ mental health. I can’t figure out how to balance physical health/Covid risk and mental health/social-emotional development. My kid is in band and the only one wearing a mask. He says he doesn’t mind…but he also hasn’t talked to a single kid in lessons the last 2 weeks. That’s not normal for him.
The news last week that vaccines likely won’t be until mid-winter has really taken the wind out of my sails. I knew September was optimistic, but I was so hopeful that it would mark the beginning of the end of this for our family.
I hadn’t even considered that my kids’ teachers could be unvaccinated and unmasked.

Ugh I'm sorry. I hope you'll feel better soon. We're travelling to see family for the first time since summer 2018 (we didn't go in 2019 for various logistical reasons) in what is currently a hot spot state (though not their specific area). I hope this surge is over by the time we go in a few weeks. My kids were mostly home this past year and it's been tough and we've been enjoying a "normal" camp & recreation summer. (I say "normal" as camp has masks inside, etc).
I am really nervous about school starting in 4 weeks. I’m in SC where the legislature passed a proviso with the budget that schools cannot mandate masks - if they do they risk funding being taken away. It makes me SO angry. Vaccination rate here is around 50%. I feel like it is inevitable that my kids will catch it at this point. I really struggled with mental health last year having kids home for virtual school. Plus we just moved so my kids don’t know anyone, I feel like they need to be at school. Freaking Republicans and their purposeful obtuseness in the name of “freedom”.

dcn, I'm feeling much the same as you. Our school district has gone "masks optional." My kid stayed home for virtual school all last year (our choice, we opted in because we could) and I refuse to sit out another year. But, that probably means my 3rd grader is going to bring it home sooner rather than later, because the school won't be as protected against outbreaks as it could be.
It's a real bummer. I'm just hopeful my kids pull through it ok. I'm hopeful our adult vaccinations will make our cases mild.
But it would be a hell of a lot better going into this school year with effective protocols that kept our area schools mostly outbreak-free last year.
I am curious the overlap between the Unmask our Kids people and the adults choosing not to get vaccinated. We’re around 70-75% with a first dose for what I would consider the school-age parent group. It’s not awful but I would feel better at the 90-95% range. It’s hard to take the Unmask crowd seriously not knowing if they’re willing to vaccinate themselves or their kids when the time comes.
The AAP is still recommending masking for all age 2+ in schools.
I’m erring on the side of elementary will still need masks so I just ordered a bunch of new reusable ones from Kohl’s. Much cheaper than a year ago. I even ordered some Christmas ones on clearance (less than $1 each) even though just a few months ago I was thinking they wouldn’t need them. 😭
I'm starting to get nervous that we are going to get exposed this week while traveling to visit colleges. We are going to Iowa and Wisconsin, and doing self-tours in Nebraska. I guess we will plan to mask as though we weren't vaccinated. The 17 year old is, but the 10 year old is coming along. Ugh. WHY (I know why) can't people just get freaking vaccinated?

FWIW per anecdotes from Facebook groups, every single rabid Unmask our Kids parent is antivax and has made it obvious.

Ugh, so I guess it didn't sink in until we were faced with this, but the Delta upticks are going to cause a hell of a time for parents of young kids (yet again). Our employer's temporary policies allowing for remote work and working without childcare have expired. Nearly 100 classrooms in NYC's public school summer programs are quarantined due to cases, and that number will probably go up. One of my managers just got a call about her son having to quarantine and now she has to scramble for childcare for the quarantine period (10 days). He's too little to be home alone and she doesn't have a ton of options other than taking vacation time. Which, at least she has it and that's more than other parents elsewhere can say, but I don't expect this to stop after this summer - it will only get worse as the school year begins if Delta continues spreading with many more parents no longer having the fallback of staying home with their kids while working (yes, I know many parents have been dealing with this from day one, just that this will become even more exacerbated as more people have returned to work onsite).

I don’t want to like this because it’s awful, but I agree. I fear the worst is yet to come for many.
The unvaccinated by choice and the unmask the kids are going to keep the pandemic going. Our school hasn't said anything except they want to be in school 5 days a week. I hope they listen to the AAP and keep masks. I also think the CDC needs to put something out about back to school.
Ugh no vaccine until mid-winter? Our school announced masks are optional, so there is no way they make it until winter to get vaccinated without getting a case.
I had a friend comment “I thought we were past this!” when her two kids got sent home for a 10-day quarantine due to exposure at daycare. No…no we are definitely not past this point yet.
I don’t know if my district will require masks in September. I know my kids’ district is planning on recommending masks but not requiring them in school(still required on buses but my kids are bused). My 8th grader is vaccinated and I prefer he wears it but I can’t force him to keep it on all day. He may wind up taking it off in class because hardly anyone else is wearing one and since it’s not required, teachers won’t be telling him to put it back one. So I have to trust him to be smart and also trust his vaccine works if he does unmask. Also his close friend who will most likely wind up in his classes(both boys have IEPs due to learning disabilities and ADHD and get in class support in the same subject) ) will be masked. His family member has health issues and hasn’t been able to get vaccinated. They are very strict with masks. Plus this kid doesn’t give a crap what other kids say and will keep his mask on no matter what and I’m hoping his attitude rubs off on mine. My 10 year old is a rule follower so if I tell him he had to wear one, he’ll keep it on. Lol. I’m also 95% sure his teacher is vaccinated(most teachers in the district are). Knowing most of the parents, about half of the class will be masked.
I work with 3-4year olds. I’m assuming if masks aren’t required, hardly any kids will them. I’m supposed be providing in class support in 3 classrooms to kids with IEPs. I am in and out of multiple rooms. I plan on wearing a mask for the majority of the time even though I am vaccinated to protect my students since they cannot be vaccinated yet. I’ll feel more comfortable dropping it down from time to time for a few minutes when kids need see my entire face or if I need a quick breather(instead just huddling in the corner for a minute). However, most of the day during instructional time, I’ll wear it.

I can see how this fall will be especially challenging for parents of kids not old enough to be vaccinated. Our remote work policy officially ends after Labor Day and I know a lot of other organizations are following a similar time frame.
I am fortunate that I should be able to still work remotely 2-3 days a week and that my boss is flexible, but I know a lot of others don't have that flexibility.

Yep. It’s likely going to be disastrous for many parents of young kids and yet another several months at least of highly interrupted education.

With less understanding employers.
my heart races just thinking about this, and my spouse and I have some flexibility. But not enough for another year of this at school. My kids haven't been in a classroom full day since this started. I have an incoming K kid too.

I kept my kids home last year, but this year financially I needed to return to teaching. So starting a new job, no sick time saved up, and two kids in school. I am getting nervous.
There's an awesome construction theme VBS happening in my city that my DS(5) would love. However, masks are optional for all. In my red city that means no masks. When I called to ask about the mask protocols I had to bit my tongue to stop myself from responding to her gleeful "we let everyone decide for themselves" answer.
I'm so worried it's when not if my DS gets COVID this fall in kinder. All these fucking assholes.
I follow Your local epidemiologist who calls it the "Pandemic of Self Over Others" rather than the pandemic of the unvaxxed. That sums it up for me.
