JayhawkGirl I am so sorry to read how sick you all are. I’m glad you and dh seem to be on the mend and I hope your children recover very soon. That is scary. I read more and more about what “mild” really seems to be, and it’s not sniffles and sneeze like most people think of for mild.

I won’t know what school will look like here for another couple of weeks. I do know that masks will be required, but we have a county-wide mask mandate for anyone unvaccinated so that makes the decision point easy for schools.
I can’t believe there are school districts that aren’t disclosing exposures. It’s such a different world here.

Thanks everybody. DD’s inhaler has helped a little bit. She asked when her next dose was as her cough worsened 3.5 hours into the 4 hours between doses today.
Our doctor’s office said to take this immunity and go have some fun the next 3 months while they/we have powerful antibodies. Her first wish? To please go inside Target. Sweet girl, we will go inside Target DS would like to go to top golf and shop for some back to school clothes not online.
Thanks for reading my frustrations and worries. As I disinfected all our bathrooms and stripped every pillow sham and blanket today (day 13 of isolation), I realized I have never before been sick same time as the kids. And we’ve never all four been sick at the same time. I hope never again.
We start back 8/17. There is a virtual option, but it is being outsourced as opposed to being a district-led thing with district teachers.
Last year we ended the year with 5 days in school but only partial - 8-12:40 with no lunch on campus. This year we are going back to full schedule 8-2:40 with lunch. Our kids mostly eat outside, unless it rains, which is pretty rare.
This is almost exactly us. They even eat outside in light rain since there is a shade structure above the picnic tables where they eat. But they do eat inside for smoke days.

Still haven't heard about school here (we start in September). 2 out of 3 kids are vaxxed and the older two hadn't been masking but we all started up again after returning from vacation with colds (we tested negative for Covid late last week). My 10 yo never stopped wearing a mask.
I bought several of the Athleta masks when they were so cheap because I just knew I was going to need them again, sadly. It's depressing as hell that the prices went back up since we know what that means.
I’m so annoyed with myself. I have a ton, but I could have gotten them for just over $2 a pack. Ugh.
I bought a bunch of kid AthLeta masks last week when I saw how cheap they were!!!!
Well I think Im in the the neighboring school district you are talking about, but I will answer anyway.
We are fully back to pre-covid normal. They made masks optional in school and on busses beginning with the last week of school in June which was bizarre (why not finish out the school year?)
They are "still investigating" the feasibility of a virtual option for elementary only since those kids can't be vaxxed. No proof of vaccination required for older kids.
I am pulling my younger one for unrelated reasons. I'm pretty sure her private school will remain masked, at least until vaccines are widely available for elementary ages.
My older kid will stay in public school. He's fully vaxxed.
Federal law still mandates masks on public transportation, including school buses, so your district isn’t in compliance.
Our district stopped requiring masks on buses when our governor declared that schools couldn’t mandate masks in the classroom. I’m going to follow up on this more. We didn’t send the kids back, but our friends’ kid had such a bad experience getting teased by kids wearing masks that she refused to ride the bus the rest of the year.
Right now, I feel like I’m losing hope that my kids will make it out of this without getting it. Full classrooms, no distancing, no contact tracing, no masks…it just feels like a given that they’ll get it. There’s a part of me that kind of thinks it would be best for them to just get it and get it over with so we can have hope of a school year uninterrupted by quarantines. Then I feel like a shit parent for basically wishing for my kids to get sick. Because, obviously, I don’t actually want that. What I want is for people to not be idiots so my kids can safely get an education. Yet that seems to be WAY too much to ask.

JayhawkGirl- so sorry you and your family are going through this. Praying things improve soon 🙏. DS2 has asthma and does Albuterol every 4 hours when sick (on top of his 2x/day maintenance inhaler)…when he’s really sick (which is almost every time he gets a cold) he usually only makes it to every 3 hours. His pediatrician is ok with that, basically give it as needed every 3-4 hours…when it’s even less time between then he usually needs more help (prednisone).
We are in SoCal. School started 8/17 and masks will be required indoors only. My boys have already been told to mask unless eating/drinking. It’s not worth the risk- between DS2 being high risk with his asthma and general sickness resulting in missed school (DS1 has ASD and needs to be in school as much as possible…we can do things at home but he learns better in person and behaves so much better for his teachers than me). I really hope the mask guidelines stay in place until everyone has the chance to be vaccinated.
I am in (northern, red) CA and all of the local districts last year only required masks for 2nd grade and over. All local school boards are still pending this year’s decision, and school starts for us in 9 days. The high school district did announce that masks are “required” but will not be “enforced”.... whateverTF that means. The local Let Them Breathe parent groups are leaning strong on the notion that masking children is child abuse. My kid will go to school masked, but I have zero faith in any requirements or any great voluntary participation.
I don’t think there’s a remote option. We wouldn’t use it anyway.
As of now, masks and social distancing are not required. DS1 will be required to wear a mask though. I’m so frustrated that we’ve moved away from these mandates, especially in elementary schools where the majority of kids aren’t eligible for vaccinations.
I am beyond ready for that emergency use authorization for kids 5+.
The 2nd largest school district in San Antonio has announced that they will not report COVID cases to parents/public or require quarantines.
I really don't get this. I mean they report lice. They report flu when its bad. They report the norovirus (at least here they do!). I mean fine, I don't agree with not requiring quarantine but at least tell parents so they can be aware and make the decision for themselves. Why take away that choice?

Northern VA here. AS far as I know we will be 5 days, no distancing but masks required for everyone indoors. Quarantine required (8 days with negative test) and it seems like the school is setting up a testing program (but I don't have details on that).

Blame Abbott. He has really taken away a lot of power and decision making from schools and districts. I mean Covid isn't even on the approved excused absence list yet.
For all of Texas's sake I hope this works out okay and isn't as bad as I am envisioning.
I have a feeling our younger schools will be in masks but the middle school and high school may be optional. My t1d 10 year old starts middle school this year so for her Id really like masks even though her 13 year old brother is vaccinated and would love no masks in middle school this year.
Mine were in catholic school up until this last school year. I was very unhappy with the way their school handled virtual learning in spring of 2020 (for one example, my then 6th grader had literally a five minute zoom for math two times a week with no additional work - sometimes they didn't even talk math in the five minutes) and then my daughter was diagnosed in august with t1d and I already had issues with our catholic school nurse before then, so my husband and I made the decision to pull them. Our public schools had such mixed ratings, I was nervous, but I've fallen in love with them, at least at my kids' grade levels. Our former school is this far going maskless next school year, even though our cases are on the rise. Too many anti-mask, anti-vax people in that population and I believe they are cowtowing.

So much for personal choice and small/local government

Florida is the same. Desantis is all “federal government can’t tell us shit but I’m going to tell every county they can fuck off and they can only do what I allow”
I hate living in a Republican stronghold. Everyone is so stupid.
I need ham like water Like breath, like rain I need ham like mercy From Heaven's gate Sometimes ham salad or casserole or ham that’s free range, all natural I need ham

Yep. DeSantis and Abbott are the same brand of asshole.
"Personal responsibility." Oh okay. That is working really well.
We start in 2.5 weeks. We're over 20% positivity right now (we were at 5% when the mask policy was dropped for this year). Our hospitals are hitting pandemic admittance highs again, with ~95% of the COVID cases unvaccinated (and more and more children among them).
I'm pretty confident sending my 14yo to HS, he's totally vaccinated and could not give less of a fuck about what other kids are doing with their faces- he'll be masking indoors. DD is only 11yo, though, and in MS this year- where classes change 7 times + lunch. I am sick with worry over her. She's at school this week for science olympiad camp, and while all the teachers volunteered that they are vaxxed (something I really- like immensely- appreciated), she's one of a few masking. They seem to be putting the masked kids in the same small groups, though, it's clear they're trying.
We have a SB meeting today with the county health department in attendance- there's the slightest possibility that our super will fall on his sword for the SB members that elected him and order masks again, but I'm pretty sure we'll just keep kowtowing to the oh-so-passionate anti-mask minority. I am so over this state.
There is a stupid “let them breathe” rally today in front of our school board meeting. I’m in Los Angeles County, but not LA Unified Schools. Still our district has held strong with “we will follow the county mandates”. Our county currently requires everyone mask indoors regardless of vaccination status. I’m fairly confident that our district won’t go against this. I’m also very happy that my kids (the older is in high school and vaccinated) are confident in their masks and none of their friends say anything even when they choose to wear them outside. They know we have at risk family members and respect the conservative choice to mask outside if it’s crowded. Some of older ds’ friends even put their masks on in those situations as well to “protect grandpa”. I’ve honestly never been so proud of the friends my kids have chosen to associate with.

Our district, South OC, is standing firm that they have to follow CDPH guidelines and cannot remove the indoor mask mandate unless they change their guidance. I am very thankful for this and hope it doesn’t change since masks are pretty much non existent here (very anti mask) and DS2 has bad asthma and is higher risk (more concerned about long term issues but he has been to the ER several times for his asthma, including a 2 night stay).

Well CDC is now set to urge universal masking for students and teachers regardless of vax status. But I wonder how many districts will follow this since so many have already said no mask requirement.

I wish our district would but they will just go “that applies to other areas. Our transmission just doesn’t work that way.” Last week, we were at approx 550 cases per 100K for the week. Yep—now our transmission is MUCH HIGHER than those suspect “other areas” that they villainized last year.

I just watched our school board meeting. Speakers both for masks and against. The against mask people had the dumbest arguments ever - “when it’s raining, my umbrella doesn’t protect you. It’s a choice” or the parent who scripted her kid to say “masks are bad like BLM is bad”. But the board unanimously voted that masks would be worn inside and they will not go against the local mask mandate, the CDC or AAP recommendations. One parent was mad that our district set up a vaccine clinic for our older students who wanted it because that was forcing the district’s opinion on her family according to her. Someone else said masking kids is the same as rape. Clearly that person has never been raped. It was insane. But the board did not waiver - even the two who wanted the schools open fully (with masks) earlier than the county recommended last year were strongly pro mask to insure minimal days list due to quarantine.
