A charter school is opening in our area. I have no interest in sending my kids but wanted to look at the website and curriculum because I know some who are. So I’m reading and this:
“School name will be a licensed user of the Hillsdale K-12 curriculum, providing a classical education that is content-rich across four disciplines: Math, Science, English Language Arts (including phonics, grammar and writing), and History, with significant attention to music, art, and foreign language. Each of these disciplines will be taught with an emphasis on the history and traditions of American citizens as the inheritors of Western civilization.”
If you google them you'll see in the 1776 Curriculum the sub-headline is "America is an exceptionally good country". Future poking around the site showed a letter to teachers that mentioned the focus is on what has ensured in the US (ideals) vs. evils that have based away (slavery).
I would say it seems like they have a very narrow civics/history focusing on the highlights of US and lacks the wider views or deeper context that have become the hallmark of many high school programs. Without more information I wouldn't go so far as to say there is a clear bias in their instruction. Something worth considering for folks who attend.
It's code for "we teach white supremacy." Full stop. The "inheritors of Western civilization" language means kids will learn that white people invented democracy, pioneered liberty, and spread freedom.
If you want proof, Hillsdale is encouraging people to use its curriculum to "fight critical race theory" and "combat left-wing revisionist history."

Ok so I read it and said to my husband this sounds like some racist b*llshit. I’m not surprised because my understanding is that the people flocking to it are Trumpets. I just wanted to be sure I wasn’t trying to see something it wasn’t but of course it’s just as I thought

Yep, it sounds about the same as white families who opened private schools in the 1960s to avoid school desegregation. Of course, the charter school kids won't learn about that. *eyeroll*

Well the difference here (and this is HUGE) is that charter schools are public schools that are funded with taxpayer money and subject to federal and local educational standards.
OP is this charter already approved or applying for approval?

This school year will be their first.
😭😭😭
I’m sure there is a lawsuit in there somewhere. I hope the right people know about it and follow through.
Thanks. That alone would have me steering clear. lol
Yes for sure steering clear but this means there is a town who has voted to use taxpayer funding to teach this stuff!! Absolutely not ok!!
This isn’t something that was voted on to my knowledge. This all started with parents upset in another district altogether about the use of technology. The school didn’t even have a location . They will now have their lower grades in one church, and the middle to upper in another church. It kills me.

I’m not familiar with any state where a charter school can exist without applying for a charter and being approved by a multiple-member board. Sometimes it’s the local school board, and sometimes there is a separate board that just approved charter schools. Either way they fill out a lengthy and detailed application, have to go to hearings, get public comment, etc.

Oh I read that as the people voting, not the board. I’m still confused on it’s existence though starting in one district snd now in another.
