đź‘Ź Their mascot was so egregiously, flagrantly racist. Would be nice if they made some restitution for it. Donating resources to the MMIW crisis, etc.
With that being said, I feel like they purposefully announced on DAY 1 OF THE OLYMPICS to minimize coverage of this--which might be a good way to mitigate righteous, racist outrage. Probably won't work, but solid try.
ETA--announcing this in 1985 (or earlier) would have been better timing though.
Nope, not at all. it's named after a famous statue in Cleveland which is located near the stadium. They picked a name that has meaning to the local area.

Maybe this will help influence my school district a bit more. I have been trying to get them to change from the "Braves" for several years. They won't because "really important" former (high school) athletes identify with it. Once a "Brave", always a "Brave."

My high school had an offensive mascot/name change my sophomore year. Everybody threw a huuuuuge fit and OMG how dare you try to erase that name, what about our school history, rabble rabble rabble rabble.
It has been 20 years with the "new" name. Incredible how much no one gives a shit now.

I have a long story that I spend a lot of time being really upset about, because I work for the district and also because of how they pretend to embrace cultural responsiveness. But part of this is the last time our local go-to Native American (there is a reason this is the person, can explain if needed) tried to fight this, he was abused endlessly by the local athlete coaches and community. He gave up. He is quite old now and I told him it's not his responsibility, but I am working on this. I had contacted him to make sure I wasn't overstepping and wanted to be able to quote him as not being ok with the use of the mascot name and a smaller issue with our logo. He said yes but just really wasn't up to being abused again.

BTW, if anyone wants to help support my town's switch in mascot when this comes to a head, because it is headed there probably in a few months, let me know! There will be facebook fights, letters to the editor and more fun for everyone!
A local school just changed it's name from Sir Francis Drake to a revered former teacher who had been both a Tuskegee airman and Olympic gold medalist. It's an awesome change.
I’m from Cleveland. I have family that is “bummed” about the change.
But all of my memories of cheering the team are of being with family. Not because they had a racist and offensive creepy ass red mascot.
Like the only thing I can vaguely relate as a “good memory from the mascot” is one time at a spring training game my parents and aunts/uncles all signed up for a credit card so all the kids could get a “free” helmet. But again that’s not necessarily tied to the mascot.
There could have just been a cat on the helmet and we still would have been excited over the free souvenir.
I think the flying G baseball design needs some work, but Go Gaurdians!

My mom tried to get me to be upset that my HS wanted to change its mascot from an Indian to something else. I just said I have no attachment to it but even if I did, I’d prefer a mascot that wasn’t offensive to a group of people.
That said, our current town seems to incorporate its mascot more throughout so I could see there being a bigger uproar if the idea to change it was ever broached.
My coworker and I watched the Tom Hanks video today and were like “uhhh okay…?” We didn’t get why they chose Guardians. He’s from CLE and was hoping for something more directly connected to CLE. I sent him the bridge statue article and that makes a lot more sense.

Glad they changed it.
The problem (or one of them) is that 20 years ago our district realized the image they were using for their logo was not ok, and met with representatives from our local Haudenosaunee culture center (the leader of this is the person I referred to as our go-to person) and hashed out a compromise. A compromise. Right there that should have rung a bell in someone's head that they weren't doing the right thing. Why not go with what the representatives said was the right thing to do? Why compromise? Also, you'll be shocked to know that our district has failed to live up to their part of the agreement in many ways, such as teaching about the Haudenosaunee culture of this area in every grade. There's a half-hearted 4th grade trip and there used to be a few hours during new teacher training at the culture center.
So even though the district was asked by the representative not to use the word Braves, the district "won" and now tries to tell people that the center agrees with it, because they had to agree TO it. To get the logo changed to a wampum belt. But we even failed in that, because the district chose to use red for the belt. If they actually participated in the learning they were supposed to, they would have learned that we do not use red unless we are inviting someone to war.
Ooh, I can use that if I get in trouble for causing trouble. I was invited to war by the district itself...
Cleveland gal here. I'm thrilled they finally changed it, and I like the new name. Genuinely can't understand the hate, especially since the fans were included in the decision making process. Those not from here wouldn't know about the edifices on the Hope Memorial Bridge, so I wouldn't expect them to get it, but with all due respect, the name isn't for them, it's for the CLE fans!
There were rumors (probably unfounded, but still funny) that they were going to change the name of Progressive Field to "The Galaxy." That made me laugh and laugh.
I'm glad they finally changed the name. People are so upset about this. It's ridiculous.
