I'm near to Tokyo time, so I theoretically watch in time. But I watch either bbc or CBC. Bah! It reminds me of watching 2012 when I was in Hawaii when I had to watch in vpn instead of wait for hours for people time

We are watching the women's road race (we only have live nbc tv, no cable at all).
We noticed the following cars have extra bikes on the roof racks. Why? If they crash, there's no way they can catch up, right? Or is it just because they want to finish?
Question #2: can the coaches talk to the cyclists in any way to strategize? Like a earbud? Or even just shouting at them? They just said the US coach said the team was helping a certain cyclist (can't remember her name) medal, but how does he know?

I was accidentally up late enough to watch the women’s gymnastics live. The Russian team looked great. I think us will get it together, I hate that all the headlines are “for first time since 2010….2nd place!” Oh noes! I hope it doesn’t get into their heads.

#1-it depends on where the crash happens. Cycling a team sport, so it's really important to get your teammates back up the peloton to support your lead cyclists. In the men's race there was a crash early on and those racers managed to get back into the peloton really quickly. The race is over 6 hours, so if the crash happens early enough there's a lot of road left to get back into it. Also I believe the ranking of the athletes affects how many slots you have for the next Olympics (though I'd have to verify to make sure, it's different in every sport. Some sports award slots based on things like world cup rankings, others use the previous games).
#2. For the Olympics the cyclists do NOT have radio contact with their coaching staff. In the Tour De France (and other cycling events) they do. But for whatever reason the Olympics do not allow it. They do get information shouted to them, plus sometimes cyclists have to use the aid cars and get information that way (in the men's race they showed a cyclist getting a shoe change from a car, so that was one opportunity).
In more ways than one! Some eye candy on both teams!
I had to look up USA Tattoo guy - he’s 6’10”! He didn’t even look that tall compared to his teammates. I wonder at what point in your adolescence do you figure out that basketball isn’t for you and you should pivot to volleyball.
right?! Knowing that volleyball isn’t nearly as popular, I too wonder how they got started.

Maybe since volleyball isn't as popular, there was a better chance of a sports scholarship.

I only played in middle and high school, but I was always tall and while I already knew I was terrible at basketball, I hated that everyone assumed I was great at basketball so I opted for volleyball almost out of spite lol. I loved volleyball and was a pretty decent player. But maybe this guy was like me and wanted to do something that wasn't what everyone automatically expected. Or maybe only I'm the weirdo to do that.

haha, maybe! It’s also a very fun sport to play and watch! I tried out for my school’s volleyball team, but 5’2” me didn’t make it. Soccer was my sport anyway.
I cannot believe these skateboarders are not required to wear helmets. That feels so irresponsible to me!! Think of all of the aspiring skateboarders out there that are watching.

My SIL is 6'2" and this is basically her story. She played college, too.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
It’s actually pretty fun to watch in person - and so many countries are really into it. It’s like a mix of basketball and soccer. And fast paced!
We were watching at a bar and everyone was cracking up. They score every time they come down the court. They pull the goalie constantly then are surprised when the other team tosses the ball in. I need a rules rundown!

I miss watching in bars. I watched winter 2010 in a bar, and it was fantastic. We all got really into curling with it adult hot chocolate. I watched the last couple world cup in a bar (men and women), and it was a blast. Alas, no dining in anywhere this year. While country has been in near lockdown since June 1.
