I like swimming, it’s my sport of choice. But dude, it’s like Olympic combinatorics to come up with event lengths, plus they are showing all the qualifiers. I kinda regret not having cable, all we have it an antenna. And I’d like a little variety in my games.
Just watched the U.S. vs. China women's indoor volleyball and the U.S. looked so much better this game than they did vs. Argentina. I wish there was a better way to shoot the matches, like better camera angles somehow, because those overhead shots of the whole court are just to hard to really appreciate the action. Half the time we can't tell which direction the set went until the hitter makes contact, LOL. Beach seems easier for television.
Speaking of, I'm sad Kerri Walsh Jennings didn't qualify for this Olympics. I'll cheer for April Ross to finally get a gold medal though, hopefully.
It seemed like the announcers were like "QUICK! ALASKA FACTS!" - she even seemed so shocked herself. King was really sweet and genuinely proud of her.
I wonder if they know how far it is from Seward to that one 50-m pool in the state they kept mentioning.
Google tells me the 50-meter pool is in Anchorage and is about 2.5 hours away from Seward. At some point they said she trains in a 25 meter (maybe yard) pool, but has swum in the pool in Anchorage, it's just not her home pool.
I'd say most swimmers actually train the majority of their time in a 25 yard/meter too.
We watched some surfing to support the new sports. The weather looked terrible!
A tropical storm was hitting the area. I couldn't tell if they *moved* the event to happen during it, or if it was already scheduled that way. But based on what I was reading (wasn't able to watch the event) many of the surfers were excited about the weather.
Having lived through maaaaaany tropical storms and typhoons in Japan, I viewed it the same way you did

Bummer, but they did their best under crazy circumstances. I hope they can put this behind them for the individual events.
Fun fact - Great Britain is the first team that isn’t USA, China, Romania or Russia/Soviet Union/Unified Team to win a medal in this event in 33 years.
Silver is amazing! And I hope if she wants to, Simone is up for individual competitions and decided to save whatever is left in the tank for those. Or you know, just say f it, I’m the GOAT, peace out, I’m taking care of myself now.
I watch through the NBC Sports app. Might be on NBCSN on cable then.
Thanks. Not like I had a chance to watch it. Too busy this morning. I'm already spoiled just from one glance at facebook from a news outlet.
It seems like there is no ability to avoid spoilers this Olympics. Like they're not even trying anymore. I'm not sure I've watched one event live that actually mattered. I can't keep track of when anything is on and when important stuff is on I'm too busy.
Well, the phone notifications about Biles and gymnastics were a surprise this morning. I hope a bit more comes out, because while I want to respect her medical privacy, the stories are painting it that she did a bad vault and just said “I’m done”. And while I really want to say we need to respect the mental health of althletes, like the tennis player a few weeks ago, when they say enough is enough, it’s just… I don’t know. And I’m pissed at myself for the way I’m thinking about it.
edit: I see some talk of an old injury. I don’t know what it’s bugging me so much that the GOAT would say peace out in the middle of a team event. But yeah, it does.
