I saw a report that getting a third dose of the Pfizer vaccine greatly increased resistance to the Delta variant. I'm thinking of going to Walgreens or the county health department to get another dose.
I'm wondering if this is going to become a common thing- people sneaking in a 3rd dose. I don't really think there are mechanisms in place to properly track people across all the various vaccine administration sites.
Yesterday my coworker asked if I thought work would reinstate the masks in the office rule. I said I didn't think so since they are requiring everyone to get vaccinated and have everyone documenting their status.
Late last night they sent an email saying that they're required again effective today. Our entire state is moderate so not even part of the CDC recommendation but it's understandable. Work has been very cautious this whole time, which I am fine with.
It's not as bad for me since I have my own office and can take it off when alone but the rest of my team are back to all day masking.
MH is a plumber and they reinstated masking rules this week too, including/especially while in customer's homes. They're also strongly encouraging vaccination and said they might start teaming up plumbers and apprentices based on their status.
Ugh, I wonder if we will be far behind then. I obviously what to do what is smart, but I am not excited about the idea of being fully in the office 5 days a week and wearing a mask the whole time. Especially on days like today, when I have no meetings and could do everything I need to at home...
Small problem to have in the grand scheme of what other people are dealing with, I know.

Yep, I already know someone who snuck in a 3rd dose of Moderna. He's high risk and got his first shot back in January. The side effects were similar to the second dose.

I have to get a mammogram today, put off from spring 2020. I have cloth masks (I left my bag of KN95s at work), but the hospital has disposables available right as you come off the elevators from the parking garage, so I am going to pick up one and put it on underneath my cloth mask.
Send good vibes for me, GBCN friends; I'm anxious about it all.
Thank you for taking care of yourself even though you feel anxious. 🙏
I’d hate to get a third dose (not that I’m personally considering it) only to have a BETTER shot some weeks later. I’m not so much worried about myself, but my mom is high risk (due to age and previous lung damage that nearly killed her several years back) and was vaccinated relatively early. So I’m watching this closely.
notsopicky- Ditto NewOrleans. I was *way* overdue for a mammogram and was so anxious. The staff and nurse who did the mammogram were so kind and I was in and out quickly. Sending you good thoughts.

notsopicky I had one on February and double masked. Obviously its anxious inducing enough on its own outside of covid and I was very nervous. Sending you good thoughts as well.

I saw a headline at NYT about people sneaking third doses. ETA: exactly what goldengirlz posted lol.

So, my job JUST brought everyone back 5 days a week on July 6th lolsob. Most of us were going a few days a week since last June though. After today's meeting, almost nothing is changing as of now. Just this past Monday, HR allowed fully vaccinated staff to remove masks in shared workspaces/offices (but still must wear them whenever out in the public areas), and they said the latest news still allows for this. We don't fall under the city's requirement for all municipal workers to be vaccinated, but I got the sense that that will happen in the next couple of weeks here anyway, as they just announced all new hires must be vaccinated (allowing for accommodations based on medical conditions or religious beliefs).
Maureen Kelley, a member of the World Health Organization’s ethics committee for Covid-19 research, said that on a policy level, the focus among the governments of high-income countries on giving out booster shots was shameful when only 1.1 percent of people in poorer countries have received at least one dose.
She said that anyone who got a booster shot was contributing to the ignorance about vaccine inequities.
“If I make a decision to go get a booster, I think I’m complicit in my government’s or the pharma companies’ decisions,” said Dr. Kelley, a bioethics professor at the Nuffield Department of Population Health at the University of Oxford. “I don’t think we can easily separate out the individual decisions from these kind of more policy-level decisions.”

It annoys me that people now feel the urge to secure a bonus dose of a scarce commodity (from a global perspective) when it would be SO MUCH BETTER FOR EVERYONE if the vaccine holdouts just got their damn shots. I understand why people are doing this, especially high risk people, so I’m not really judging. But we were so incredibly fortunate in this country to have had early access to something EVERYONE wants. You can literally walk into a pharmacy in any state and get vaccinated, which is certainly not the case in many (most?) other countries. My understanding is that in terms of reducing the risk of more infectious/deadlier variants down the line, having more people protected with 1-2 doses would be better than a small number protected with three. To quote Green Day, “Don’t want to be an American idiot …”

I am not concerned about the global impact of individuals going out to get a third shot, but I think it makes sense not to make it an official recommendation due to supply/equality issues. Where I live, and probably all over the country, we have a lot of doses that will expire soon and I don't expect that approval for younger people will come before the expiration. Since there is no plan/intention to redistribute them, I'd rather they went into arms than in the trash. Since most eligible people who haven't been vaccinated aren't changing their minds, it's ok to me for people to get third shots. If expanded eligibility was expected in the next few weeks I would feel differently.
Work is going back to requiring everyone wear a mask regardless of vaccination status as of today. They had dropped it to only if you weren't vaccinated but it was on the honor system.
There haven't been many people in the office yet but they're sticking with their plan to bring in another wave of people next week, even though covid numbers are really bad here and the local hospital is begging people to get the shot and go back to masks and distancing. I don't get why they're being so stubborn on returning.

I just meant that it didn’t need to be this way. Think about what you just said. We have doses of lifesaving medicine that are about to expire because of vast misinformation campaigns, selfishness and stupidity, while other countries are clamoring for relief. What we do with those doses now may very well be justified, but this is a prime example of American excess and waste.

We bought plane tickets and reserved a hotel room for our 12 year anniversary in Las Vegas, and now I think we might have to cancel. All this Delta business is making DH nervous (me too, if I'm honest), and I'm just so disappointed. I know we're not alone and other people are having to rethink a bunch of things, I'm just all up in my feelings about it. I was so excited to go somewhere on a REAL vacation (even if it was just for a few days!). We're going to give it two more weeks and if things don't improve significantly (I'm not optimistic), we're cancelling.
Anyone else starting to feel a little claustrophobic about all of this? Things are still good here, but I feel like it's only a matter of time before we need to start cancelling plans and staying home unless absolutely necessary. I was about to book plane tickets to see family in October, but I am holding off for now and seeing how things go. It's been so wonderful to be back in the world in the last 4 months, I can't believe we as a society have screwed this up so badly again. The idea of staying home and away from people again feels suffocating.
I'm so bummed that restrictions are coming back. Mask mandates back in my city and our company is moving back a phase for reentry into the building. We had 3 really good months where it felt like life was coming back and we even were able to sneak in a cruise a few weeks ago. So glad we did it then because I don't see that being a comfortable experience here soon. DH and I wanted to fly next month to see a dear friend, but I'm getting really hesitant. The number of breakthrough cases on the vaccinated seem to be on the rise and I don't want to do something to put me back in that risk for no real reason. Ugh!

Well we never got real “freedom” because the bulk of vaccinations took place in June and July under the idea of getting a COVID Passport. I am curious to see how this will work because cases are crazy in Southern Europe. Supposedly in places like Italy you will have to be vaccinated to be able to enjoy regular life like eating out and going to bars. There were major protests in France but I think they will push ahead

Yes. And also just ... taken aback by how fast things are going downhill again. I think on a pure numbers basis, it sort of feels worse than it is, at least in places with good vaccine uptake. Maybe? The positivity rate in my county is only like 4%, and spread is still considered moderate. IIRC the positivity rate is the area of VA with the most cases is still only 8.5%. That a fraction of where things were earlier during the worst of this. But it is still way, way higher than things were a month ago. (And of course that is just one metric, though the trend is similar across other measures.)
I booked my first work trip in a year, to L.A. at the end of October. I have no idea if it will actually happen.

YES. I was finally open to & comfortable with seeing (vaxxed) friends in small groups, having our BFF couple visit/stay over at our other property, dining outdoors. I wanted to invite my parents to come here in September...haven't seen them in 2 years...and now I feel we're going backwards, and I can't invite them, and I'm going to have to stop doing the things I mentioned above. It is SO FRUSTRATING.

holy shit....i hope these numbers are wrong or the data is being skewed someway. The numbers on Houston in the last week are higher than they ever were at the peak?? I wish this had the trendline We were at 100-200 /day or so in Jun & early July. Just had days with reports of 2300 and 3500! covid-harriscounty.hub.arcgis.com/pages/cumulative-data#reported-cases-graph

I think it’s because the infection rate is so high. If you look at CovidActNow, the infection rate is over 1.4 in many states, so the numbers are going up very quickly.
I also think that, once we gather enough data, the breakthrough infection rate will end up being higher than what they’re currently reporting. First of all, we’re not testing nearly enough to catch every asymptomatic infection or every individual who thinks they just have a cold. And the anecdotal evidence doesn’t jive with the idea that this is “rare,” or at least what we tend to consider as “rare,” which is basically “you have a greater chance of being struck by lightning.” And that’s why I think we’re all feeling so dejected. Like this was supposed to a problem of the unvaccinated now, while the rest of us got to hug our loved ones and travel for fun and blah blah blah. But the damn unvaccinated are making life difficult for ALL of us, even beyond the spillover effect on mask mandates and other restrictions. We’re back to second-guessing our every decision. And that SUCKS.
I just so frustrated and unsure of what to do. Looks like my office is pushing back our return to the office date which I’m thankful for.
As a Fed we haven’t really heard anything from our agency about Biden’s announcement this week and I’m super interested in how this will work/play out.
As for masks I’ve just been wearing my cloth one for running to the store but will look for something else if I’m going to have to be inside more. A friend did recommend this co. for masks: www.armbrustusa.com/

My office hits it's 100% return to office as of Monday. All employees. Masks only required if you are not vaccinated, and that's on the honor system (which didn't work when they mandated everyone wear masks earlier).
Should be interesting to see how the next few weeks go.
Oh, and for more fun, I'm supposed to go on my first post-covid flying business trip in a couple weeks. To Canada. Which means I have to get tested about four times (before and after heading up and heading back south).
My biggest fear is catching covid now, and having that interrupt my plans. Or, catching covid while in Canada, and having to figure out how all that will work. Or, that one of my coworkers that is also traveling will have a positive test, complicating life for the rest of us.
