A kid on my son's team tested positive last week, exposure day would have been Thursday. My son woke up with a sore throat on Sunday morning and is congested. He is fully vaccinated, but I took him for a test this morning just to be safe. Of course we are supposed to leave for vacation at the end of the week.
Our daycare and summer camp are both shut down for two weeks now due to multiple teachers testing positive last week. We are close with one of the teachers and she told us that more than half of the teachers didn't get vaccinated. I am so frustrated and mad at their selfishness. Sure they are young and might not get that sick, but look at all the stress and difficulty this has caused for so many families. It's going to be rough trying to work from home with a 2, 4, and 8 year old.
I'm in FL and there will be no masks in schools this coming year. DeSantis has threatened to remove school board members if they try to institute a mask policy. I am so nervous for my 8 year old. We kept him home doing virtual school all last year, but he desperately needs to back in a classroom with other kids. I feel sick about it. They actually did a good job this past year proving they can have kids at school in person and limit spread, but now they are getting rid of all the tools that made that possible.
I think this is key. What they did worked last year...before Delta. And when there were still mandates (even if just local) and people voluntarily changing their own behavior, or more "involuntary" because things weren't open as much nor were travel options as available as they are now. None of that is the case right now. These are different times.
Exactly. I want to go to the school board meeting and say "are you stupid?!" and explain this to them as they say masking is optional. Willful stupidity.
My 10 year old has a Lego robotics class this week. It’s part of an enrichment program run by both the school district and the town’s recreation department. Class was limited to 20 kids and they work in pods of 4 or less. You are with the same pod all week. The class is held was supposed to held at a middles school but got moved to the neighboring elementary school instead due to work being done in the middle school. They spread out in the all purpose room in normal times for this class because they need a large open space to test their robots. I went to high school with the guy who teaches the class. I’m 99.9999% certain he’s vaccinated. I would be shocked if he was an anti-vaccine covid denier. Plus almost all of the staff in the district are vaccinated.
I registered him for the class back in May.
In July, the school district announced that masks were optional for summer programs like credit recovery classes at the high school level and extended school year programs for special ed kids.
Most of the parents and kids at drop off were masked. The 2 teachers I saw were not. One of them was my kid’s teacher. But like I said, I’m very confident he is vaccinated. I just wish he would wear it while with kids who can’t get vaccinated. But that might not cross his mind. He teaches high school normally plus I don’t think he has kids of his own. My son said in his class almost every kid was masked the entire time. This particular class is for kids entering grades 3,4 and 5. The unmarked kids were in their own pod. My kid had 2 kids in his pod and they both were masked. The pods were separated/spread out so there was no contact between pods. He was only in close contact with the 2 other kids. So even though I’m not thrilled that not everyone was masked, it seems like this is a safe risk. And my kid was so happy and had so much fun. He’s already brainstorming ideas for the next task for tomorrow.

Liked your post for the last sentence. I want my kids to be in school in person. Most people do! But it only worked because we required masks and other provisions.

NYC's teachers union is fine with the vaccination-or-weekly testing requirement for teachers. Whew. But DH's phone is probably blowing up from his colleagues who don't want to do either.

My DS(5) is an only child. He has had so little interaction with other kids for 1.5 years now. We moved to my very red hometown in June 2020 where we know no one with kids his age who aren't crazy trumper anti maskers anti vaxxers. I home schooled him for prek. He needs to be in school and I'm terrified.
I feel like this question is so last year, but where do you take your kids for a test and is there a specific test I should try to get. Two of my kids are in a summer day camp through their school. They are 8, so not vaccinated obviously. One of them woke up today with congestion and a cough. I can't find a policy from the school. I'm going to ask, but in case they leave it up to me, what kind of test should I get him and is CVS/Walgreens good with kids or did you go to an urgent care.
CDC will recommend universal mask wearing in schools. THANK GOODNESS.
This is such a huge relief. I hope my idiotic superintendent follows this recommendation.
I’m hoping as both a parent and a teacher that our governor will just say based on CDC guidance, he’s bringing back the mask mandate in schools. That way idiot superintendents like yours will have no choice. I don’t know what my district or the kids’ will do yet.

This does remind me I should stock up on fresh masks for the kids. They're using paper now for summer camp and warmer weather because they feel more breathable but I hate the waste, and the ones they used last school year are probably in need of replacement.

I got my 8yo tested at walgreens this past weekend, for camp clearance. We had to swab her ourselves, they walked us through it step by step. Had the results within a few hours.

I went to go buy some masks for BB from Athleta bc they used to be on super sale. They are still on sale, but the sale price has been raised. Ugh.

I bought kids masks from Athleta this winter and every single one got holes. I haven't had any issues with other masks. They did refund my money. Anyone had a similar experience or did I just get a bad batch? My adult masks from there are holding up well.

We did CVS. You will have to do it, but my DS said it was much more bearable than when urgent care did it. we had results that evening.

We've had athleta masks for the kids and haven't had any holes.

I would call the school and ask. For our school/daycare, they require PCR or molecular tests and will not accept antigen tests (which tend to be rapid and are available over the counter as well). There are rapid PCR tests available so it can get confusing. When I've had to get our kids tested so they can return to school/daycare, I've taken them to either our dr office or pediatric urgent care. They offer the tests drive up so it is pretty easy.

We have our reopening committee meeting tomorrow, so we will work out all the details.
I’m expecting that cohorts, split lunches, and masks will still be in place. We will be in person 5 days, they announced that last year. The question remains if remote choice will be happening. If it is, they will need a teacher assigned to that group if there is no more remote planning time one day a week.
I am thinking that the smaller things like assigned grade level entrances, middle school teachers changing rooms while kids stay put, specialists not being able to have classes in their own rooms, no kids in the library will end.
I doubt there will be a vaccine mandate, but will probably be voluntary pooled testing.
I am glad the CDC revised the mask recommendations today, so we can go in with that information.
Thursday the ME CDC is hosting a meeting with all the superintendents. The district will adjust the plan we make tomorrow based on that conversation.
My own kid will go back to childcare. The state is still requiring masks inside for 5+. They can come off outside.
I am still not really taking her anywhere that is optional. She just went to the grocery store for the first time since March 2020 and we have been to a few outside events. Every time I start to get brave enough to do something cases and hospitalizations rise and Delta goes around breaking through in vaccinated people.
I’m leaning toward wearing my mask in stores again.
I am hopeful that next summer we can do some great trips.

My H had to get a test to go into the office for something a few weeks ago. He made a next-day appointment at Walgreens and it was very easy. It was through the drive-thru, a self-administered test. He got text results two hours later. His work allowed both rapid and PCR tests to be used though.

I am happy about the new CDC recommendations, but worried that many districts won't follow suit. For mine personally, I think they'll only follow what IDPH and ISBE put out (IL Dept of Health and Board of Ed). Both of those bodies had previously come out and said masks are not required but recommended for unvaccinated individuals and it was up to each district. However, they also said they were following the CDC guidance. I'm hoping since the guidance is changing, IDPH and ISBE will come out and change theirs. Of course, if the wording is "recommend universal masking" vs "requires universal masking," I have a feeling my district still won't require it. They have always done the bare minimum. Last year we had zero social distancing. We had rooms full of 30 kids because it wasn't required by the state, just recommended to the greatest extent possible. The only thing required was masking, so that's all we did.

I only have the adult masks which is why I thought to get her the kids version. I am sorry that happened - I did see one of her classmates had one and it seemed fine. Glad they did the right thing and refunded you.
I’m glad to see the CDC Recommendation for others, but I’m not optimistic anything will change here. Our governor won’t allow mask mandates, so unless she changes or it becomes a federal law, we’re stuck.
We’re actually waiting for Covid results for my oldest right now.

I don’t think anything will change either. Our district is knee deep in unmasked events already.
