I think I might go down the double mask route for my son: disposable paper mask underneath a Tommie Copper cloth mask. I have 60 KN95s, but they are super tight and uncomfortable (even for me) and I can't imagine those would fly for him all day every day.
Guess he should practice putting both masks on (he starts school in 3 weeks).
Why do I feel like we're all on the disaster train? And I say that while living in an area w/ really good vax rates...ugh.

I know breakthrough cases are statistically rare, but man. Between here and real life, its happening all around me. H just told me BIL tested positive. He's been vaccinated since early April (teacher). He has no clue where he could have caught it.
I feel like I have to go into lockdown mode again. We were going to have the kids spend the weekend with my parents next weekend and I was so excited to go out on a date with H for the first time in 18 months, but now I am not sure I want to go to a restaurant.
We're keeping our kiddo home today because he was warm but not feverish (99.4 on our thermometer). We got a text from daycare that several kids were out due to fever, runny nose, and cough. Of course my mind immediately jumps to covid. Kiddo had his first ever real birthday party for a friend scheduled for tomorrow that we're going to miss. Thankfully he's too young to understand.

Would you feel okay with outdoor dining? DH is off today and picked me up from work to go to lunch, and I was adamant that we sit outside. I was having a nice time sitting inside restaurants lately but now I'm skittish again, sigh.

Is it rare? I mean the CDC only tracks breakthrough cases that result in hospitalization right. SO if the vaccine is doing what it should and keeping people out of the hospital, there could be a lot more out there.

Yeah, and we have done outdoor dining and breweries with the kids, too. This week has been a wild ride of emotions.

You're right...I wasn't sure how they are being tracked. H took a test recently because he had a cold, and the questionnaire for the test asked if you were vaccinated and when. I know hospitalization is what we need to be looking at. I just hate that we are back here. I feel like I am time traveling to a year ago.

I'm a teacher and I have been wearing snug-fitting cloth masks the whole time. The surgical masks are so itchy and IMO are hotter than cloth on my face, and they always ride up into my eyes. I never found a Kn95 that fit me. I do have a fat face, and every brand I ordered was too tight.
As of today, masks are required to enter our school buildings but they say they are reevaluating next week, whatever that means.

MDH said specifically this week that they were tracking breakthrough infections, beyond severe disease. I don’t know if they have the data on the website

States have started tracking both cases & hospitalization (whether I was vaccinated was an intake question for my Covid test). VA does:

Interesting, I just read a comment today that said they were only doing it for hospitalizations/severe disease but maybe that is just what they publicly release.

Our local youth basketball league just sent out a message saying they need to cancel the rest of the summer season due to too many cases in the league. Luckily the friend ds played with a few days ago that is in that league wasn't one of the ones in a game where possible exposure occurred.

I think that’s accurate for CDC, I think it varies by state the detail to which the state level health departments track. At least that was my impression from the comments of the MN health commissioner

Yes, local health departments are still tracking them. Maybe not all though.

I'm not seeing positives with vaccinations on my country dashboard. The state of Nebraska no longer shares any data for the state.

Oh, I should say I don't see them on our local dashboard either, but the DOH has been occasionally updating via press conferences and other data releases the amount of breakthroughs they're seeing.

Someone on a local FB page asked what people thought of masks in schools. Of course most responses were "hell no" and angry refusals. One person said they'll probably "bow to political pressure" and require them. I wanted to chime in that if it keeps my kid IN school, I'm perfectly fine with it. But I don't have it in me to fight these people anymore. I'm just so tired of it 😔
My grandma's friend has covid and is in the hospital. His symptoms were not necessarily typical covid so my mom went over to help him and drove him to the hospital without a mask. They are both vaccinated. My mom is now concerned about being exposed so she and my dad are not going to see grandma until at least Wednesday, when they get tested. Luckily my grandma was not exposed.
My daughter came home from camp today with the sniffles and so she'll get covid testing tomorrow. Guess our plans for the weekend are fucked.
Right? I still have scars and it may have triggered my auto immune disease, but other than that I’m fine 🙄
To be fair, I have zero sense of how contagious chicken pox is. I had it as a baby, but most were vaccinated for it by the time I was old enough to remember. This is unfortunately not a great comparison for the demographic who most needs to get their shots...

DH's fully vaccinated parents called us today to cancel their trip out to see us in mid-August. It feels too unsafe to them, particularly they are worried about the risk they (and their airline exposure getting here) would pose to 6yo DD with no comorbidities. FIL works for the CDC and generally all last year we've felt they haven't been cautious enough with COVID, so if they are scared to get on an airplane to see us... well, ugh, that scares me. Haven't seen them in 2 years.
For those that live in very covid cautious areas, do you think the latest news will impacts schools fully reopening? Our district didn’t reopen in the spring until they were required by the governor to provide some in-person learning and then they only did half days so they didn’t need to deal with the logistics of lunch and other services. I was a little skeptical that school would be full-time and now I’m worried they’re going to backtrack on the plan :/

DD had her second HPV vaccine today and asked if the nurse would let her get her COVID vaccine too. She'll be 12 in September and told me there was no harm in asking.
What about OTC tests? (That's a thing, right?) If a vaxxed person takes a COVID OTC test, how does the tracking work?
The at home that we did connected to our phone and we had to put in patient information before we took it. I didn't read all of the fine print, but I assume it transmits to the state database.

Ours was fairly conservative, in SoCal. We didn't go back 5 days a week on campus until after spring break in April and then only until 12:40 to avoid lunch (even though we eat outside 95% of the time).
I'm pretty confident we will go back full time as promised. I think there will be mutiny if we don't.

Thanks for the reassurance, that sounds similar to us here, but with only 4 days a week until 10:30. Some people on fb have started organizing school pods in the event of remote school and that’s what started me to get concerned.

Exactly. I don’t know anything about the actual science of how chickenpox spreads, but it tore through my second grade class.
From here (https://www.cdc.gov/chickenpox/hcp/index.html), a study estimated 90% of susceptible close contacts can be infected by a person with VZV (but it is much less from exposure by a person with shingles). Spread by touching the rash and perhaps by aerosol.
I got chicken pox from my third grade class. The rash developed on my birthday right as school let out. My brother caught it from me. My son had a breakthrough case at 1 but as his was mild and I kept him home from daycare because he seemed off before the rash developed, I don’t think it spread (and I told everyone we had been in contact with because he was in an infant/toddler class).
