Probably yes, I’d cancel if they haven’t received a first dose.
We flew in June with our kids (under 12), but it was to see their great grandparents, who we obviously hadn’t seen in well over a year. We won’t be flying with them again for vacation until they are vaccinated. We’ll go back to see great grandparents in early December to avoid some of the holiday rush on either side. Otherwise, no trips planned.
We went to a ski town close to us last week and honestly, it was too much. I was somewhat uncomfortable with the restaurants and things like that. I need them to be vaccinated.

My ILs (vaccinated, and FIL works for CDC) just canceled their trip to visit us in August, on account of DD being too young to be vaccinated, even though she's not the one who would be riding on the airplane. Latest I've heard from the FDA is winter for the <12 vaccine, and then they said Pfizer's and Moderna's studies are too small and need to enroll more kids to catch possible rare side effects, so I fear the timeline might actually stretch longer than that. IHME is projecting the current USA wave to peak around October. Personally, I wouldn't bother planning such a trip at this point... *maybe* Christmas.
A lot can change between now and October. I wouldn't cancel yet but I would make sure you know the last day you can cancel for a full refund. If you go by the UK and Israel data Delta will peak here before October. I certainly hope that is the case. If we go back to June levels by then I'd be comfortable traveling. If not then no.
I wouldn’t cancel yet. I would gather all of the cancellation deadlines and make a plan as you got closer.
We are on the train home from NYC now. Restaurants were so so busy, took a little adjustment and finding outdoor/rooftop dining. The train masking is decent for passengers but the conductors seem to think they enforce the rules but don’t follow them, it’s odd. We are two vaccinated adults, so a little different.

I agree with those who say prepare to cancel, but I would also consider what your plans were for once you were there. If you were wanting to do all the typical touristy stuff where there will be big crowds and lots of indoor stuff, then I might go ahead and cancel/reschedule now.
I was certainly hoping to feel more comfortable this fall than I did at the beginning of summer, but due to the Delta variant and the reluctance here for people to go back to wearing masks, I feel less comfortable traveling now than ever if it includes unvaccinated kids unfortunately.
I wouldn't cancel yet, but I'd be cognizant of the need for the kids to isolate and test before returning to school (even if the school may not require it).

Personally, I wouldn’t be too concerned about anyone getting sick. But as a parent of a kid in person school last year, there was no travel during the school year.

Can you tell me why you’re not concerned about anyone getting sick? Would help me process my own stuff.

H and I are vaccinated and science says that even if we get covid our symptoms would not be life threatening. DS is not vaccinated (not old enough) but similarly the risk of severe symptoms is low. So that is what I mean when I say I am not too concerned about getting sick. Not saying that we are somehow immune to getting covid or that it wouldn’t suck, but that the mere risk of exposure is not the deciding factor for me.

Ok thanks.
I’m not concerned that my family will die necessarily, but my understanding of what “mild” covid is (which is what we would be likely to get) is that it’s no joke. In addition I’m concerned about spreading it.
The info I keep seeing says something like 90% of those in ICU are unvaccinated- which leaves 10% that are which is not a small number.
My kids have sacrificed a lot due to Covid, and I am having trouble making them sacrifice even more instead of just going about and living their normal lives. Their school is not (at this time anyway) requiring masks, so I guess I have become pessimistic that they will get Covid because of that, and I feel like it is inevitable at this point, so why bother being careful? Now, if the school reverses their decision, I might feel more optimistic that they will actually make it until the vaccine is available for them and continue to be more careful in our personal lives.
However, we have been very careful up until maybe July of this summer. And we have taken the approach of being more careful if there is a spike and less careful when numbers are low. So I would partially base it on numbers. For all our trips, I also only book something if it is 100% refundable with a good cancellation policy. Obviously I am all over the place here, but I'm definitely dealing with a lot of pandemic fatigue and trying to conscious of other people. But we are vaccinated, and it is other people's jobs to get vaccinated, and if they choose not to then why do my kids have to live in a bubble because other people chose not to get vaccinated? But for their own health, obviously I hope my kids don't get it, and we will continue to try to be reasonably careful when possible. I don't have a great definition here like I said, I'm dealing with a lot of conflicting pandemic emotions.
ETA- I do know if school shuts down and does e-learning because they had an outbreak because they chose not to wear masks, I will be so so so angry.
ETA2- I am not blaming anyone that can't get vaccinated for health reasons. I will gladly take precautions for them, and keep my unvaccinated kids away from them depending on how they want the situation handled.
