Michael Osterholm on CNN today talking about the lack of efficacy of cloth masks:
“We know today that many of the face cloth coverings that people wear are not very effective in reducing any of the virus movement in or out, either you’re breathing out or you’re breathing in.”
What the tweet quoted is not what he means. He means use better masks, not no masks, and I’m irritated af that this is what the tweeter quoted because we need to encourage masks!

I mean, the entire video clip makes that point - there isn’t space in a tweet to quote the entire video.
No one is saying cloth masks have ZERO efficacy, but they certainly aren’t effective like KN95s. And even within the category of cloth masks, there is a ton of variation. It isn’t inaccurate to say “many” cloth masks are not “very” effective.
Other countries have encouraged and done more to promote better masks. 17 months later, it’s a shame that so many of our government leaders are acting like it doesn’t make much of a difference or doing anything to make better masks available.
Unsurprisingly, our mask mandate is back in the office. With further guidance about the vaccine mandate later this week.
I am curious about how companies are handling their mandates/return to work policies. We are supposed to return hybrid in September, masks not required and no proof of vaccination required to be maskless. I really want to email HR to see if there are any conversations happening with regards to reevaluating due to delta, but we are in a red state, so 🙄
My H’s office was supposed to go back mid-September. They just announced that everyone must be vaccinated by October, and they will reassess a return date then. Major org in NYC.
Well...today the ICU doc that I work with said the vaccine violates the Geneva Convention. Our employer has now mandated the vaccine. Hopefully this means this MD will be leaving shortly.

This is the one you were talking about a few weeks ago? Who says it’s the flu while treating people? 🙄🙄🙄

Omg, I finally deleted a high school classmate over this. She was posting about this, with spaces in her links because otherwise she'd get banned 🙄

gawd I wish I could delete him...or get him banned...
Especially when he pulls this shit while holding us hostage during a procedure: me, respiratory therapist, her student, three medical residents, and one med student. None of us could leave and we all had to stand there and listen to him dither.

Is there not an HR-related action you can take - a complaint, a formal request to have him shut his trap, etc.? Besides being idiotic, it has to be incredibly dangerous for patients/family members to hear his nonsense, much less the professional environment that he is creating.

I hate being in that situation when you can't trust the providing doctor. Can you go to the medical director?
mofongo I’m in Florida so I’m in a similar situation as you in LA. Our case rates (statewide and locally) and hospitalizations (state) are as high as they have ever been. Hospitalizations (locally) are almost as high as January. I have to go back to work serving the public (professor) with no mask mandate.
I worked face-to-face and over zoom simultaneously all last year. It was exhausting, but I’m doing it again and I don’t want to. I’m at my breaking point.
Locally, everyone is pretending it is 2019. I feel like I am in the Twilight Zone. I want to be optimistic but I’m finding it hard.
We are in the Chicago burbs, and my mom has had very few covid patients in the ER in the last month, and there are almost no admitted patients with covid. We have a pretty high vaccination rate in our area, so I am hoping that’s why and it isn’t about to hit the fan.
I googled vaccination rates by county and found our county has had to discard 110,000 doses of the vaccine because they were unuseable and that makes me want to cry for other countries without great access. That I just one county’s worth of discarded vaccines. Imagine the total for the country!

Ha, he says the people in the midwest wearing cloth masks can still smell smoke as if that means something. I can definitely still smell odors when I am wearing my (actually fit tested) N95 at work, fyi, so that doesn't really mean anything for this debate. 🤷♀️

Also, I thought studies had shown the opposite? https://www.pnas.org/content/118/4/e2014564118
My inner 13 year old boy comes out at some surprising times.
I am encouraged that vaccination numbers are rising.
Quickly, too. Our county was sitting right at 50% fully vaccinated for months. In the last week that has risen to 54% with lots of first shots given, too. Not high enough of course but I'm definitely glad to see the upward movement. As more vaccine mandates happen that will continue to rise.
Our local paper published the vaccination rates for areas of our county (since Los Angeles County is huge). Our area is 70% vaccinated of the entire population. They counted people ineligible based on age or other factors in the “population” count. Younger eligible residents are the group with the lowest vaccine rates, so there are pop up clinics again. And I think that will change soon if defense contractors follow the DoD and Fed lead, because defense contractors are our largest employers.
ETA: In LA County as a whole, 80% of residents over 65 years old are fully vaccinated. This number made me happy because I know it was challenging getting some seniors, especially senior POC and those in lower income neighborhoods to the larger county and city vaccine clinics. That’s when the pop up and mobile clinics started here. They also have a number you can cal and someone will come to your home to give you your vaccine of your can’t get to a site. It appears those efforts are slowly making an impact.

So unfortunately he only does this in front of sedated patients, in absence of families, or outside the room.
I’ve encouraged coworkers to submit conduct reports because unless there is documentation our medical director says nothing can be done. I worry that if I’m the only one submitting them it will look worse upon me than on him.
On top of that we’re incredibly short staffed for intensivists since no one wants to come work here.
NYC to require proof of vaccination for indoor dining, gyms
HELL YES!!!!
Hoping CA follows soon.
I said it last week and I’ll say it again - more hopeful than ever. The news out of the CDC was nothing I hadn’t already feared, but having the data publicized can hopefully affect some real change (vaccine uptake, vaccine mandates, and more indoor masking as that coverage improves).

OMG this is amazing but I am not looking forward to all the gym-goers around here who are fine with injecting themselves with steroids and shit complaining about not wanting to get vaccinated. And our whole household (including unvaccinated members) uses our local gym, many times for reasons beyond physical fitness since it's the Y and offers so many services, so I'm selfishly thrilled too.

It’s super frustrating.
Ugh. And in reality even with lots of documentation it would take forever for anything to happen and then you and whoever else complained would get even worse treatment from him. Not that I'm speaking from experience or anything 🙄 so sorry

I'm really hoping that this pushes my vaccine refusing sister to get vaccinated.

People in a local FB group (including one of my staff, sigh) are already talking about scoring fake vaccine passes for NYC's new rule. Sigh.
I was going to eat takeout a lot less because of how eating out makes me feel but now I feel like I have to eat inside restaurants every day to prove them wrong about this destroying local businesses.
The City of Denver is requiring ALL employees, and private-sector employees in high risk settings, be vaccinated by Sept. 30.
The new Public Health Order applies to the city’s municipal workforce of more than 10,000 employees, including police officers, firefighters, and sheriff’s deputies. The requirement also applies to workers in congregate-care settings such as nursing homes, shelters for people experiencing homelessness, hospitals, and correctional facilities, as well as teachers and staff in schools and post-secondary institutions.
There was talk that my work was going to go the same way, but we received a communication yesterday that we're staying the course with no mask or vaccine mandates.
I think what NYC is doing is awesome. I continue to feel so bad for service related jobs that will have to enforce this stuff. Like will the host have to ask to see the app to allow a diner in? It just sucks that people are still so rotten with their treatment of service staff.
I'm way way way way way more excited about vaccine mandates than mask mandates. I hope this all holds up.
I will be the first to admit I am very bitter I am going back to wearing a mask. VERY BITTER
I did my fucking part. I locked down for over a year. I religiously wore my mask. I got the vaccine the moment it was available. I am tired of compensating for other fucking assholes. The only way out of this misery is the vaccine.

This is great! I can totally see LA County following along. I can’t read the article. Does it say how they will handle people not eligible for the vaccine (medical, religion, age)? Can they just not eat indoors ever? Like a family would not be able to eat out as a family if they wanted to dine indoors?

I agree. This will continue to fuel the difficulties in finding people to work these jobs. People are finding that they can get paid more and abused less by working in factories, distribution centers, etc. I think a lot of people used to feel it was worth the trade-off of lower pay to not do a monotonous job all day long, but I think that’s changing because of how awful people have become.
Our library posted this morning that they are now going to require masks and people are flipping out. I’m heading to the library this AM just to grab a few things and offer words of encouragement…plus it’s the only place in town requiring masks @@@so I can feel like I can take my unvaccinated family members there.
The divide is going to continue to grow. Places like NY requiring vaccines to go in a business, yet places like IA, FL, and TX making even requiring masks against the law. Unless Biden passes something, nothing will change here.
