DH's best friend and his wife have so far refused to get vaccinated because they "don't want to be guinea pigs." Apparently, he just got his first dose so he can start traveling for work again (he's in sales).
His wife isn't talking to her three lifelong best friends. They did a beach trip, and she refused to stay at the house or hotel they rented, and then was pissed that they kept saying how dumb the anti-vax people are.
We've been friends since college, and they've always been drama queens, but they have totally gone off the deep end over this whole thing.
In short, require vaccinations to fly. (I don’t see this ever happening. But it would probably increase uptake.)
This would probably convince a lot of people, but not those who are in deep. My mom, for example, would just never come to see me again. She won’t even wear a mask for 3 hours to fly here as it is.
It all makes me angry, and sad, and just despondent. This is the first time in my life my mom has not fully been there for my and I’m terrified she’s going to die in the process.

There's also a lot of people who already never fly for other reasons, like cost.

You can no longer claim to be a guinea pig when A LITERAL BILLION PEOPLE have gone in front of you. Fuck these assholes.

My stepmom is former military, ex-smoker/vape user, and refuses to get the vaccine because she doesn't feel it's been tested enough. I spoke to my dad today at length while she was still at work and he told me he was resigning himself to the fact he's done *everything* he can to get her to vaccinate short of forcing it on her. He is fully vaccinated. He knows we won't visit while she's unvaxed and it's killing me because I haven't been back to WI to see them in nearly a decade (they've come out here to visit a few times in there). He said her entire family is, and I quote, "Trump humpers" and she won't listen to logic. My dad was a lifelong registered Republican.

My local pharmacy was supposed to get a vax supply this week, but that's been delayed with no new dates (pharamcist says he hopes it'll just be a few more weeks, but can't say for sure). I'm going to check back with my GP's office to see if they have any availability. I would just feel so much better if I could at least get my first shot sometime soon, but information about how and where to get them has been changing so quickly it's hard to keep up.
I'm expecting pure disaster in Houston. In-person learning, mask mandates forbidden, full capacity, and many places back to on person work so big brother can watch easier.
My health care friends are posting to avoid the ER at all costs.
At the same time, I can not bring myself to lock myself in any longer. I still wear a mask and if pisses off Abbott GREAT!
I feel like I'm hearing a resurgence of "we cannot be scared of this variant because if it's our time to die we'll die and if it's our time to live we'll live" again like I heard more in the beginning. I work in HR so hear a lot of different comments given my role (mostly about how the organization shouldn't recommend employees get vaccinated) but that one is seeming to come up a a lot.
My parents had covid in December and we nearly lost my dad due to it and they've recommended additional surgery for him due to it in a few months now that he's well enough for it (his Dr doesn't want him to do anything during this surge due to the variant), my mom has had to retire unexpectedly due to not being able to work due to long covid... so it's been a tough several months. I'm so very grateful it wasn't worse of course and that they seem generally okay now, but I'm struggling mentally again with these type of comments and barely am able to remain polite as people are telling me this stuff.
I guess it's true in that we cannot predict when we'll pass but that thinking to me is such a free pass not to take responsibility in the pandemic. And I wonder if the people saying it would really feel that way if their person was that ill.
My mom said that she’s worried about illegals bringing it up from Mexico. That she heard on the news they’re “coming in by bus, being housed in local hotels and then set free.” I told her not to believe everything she heard on the local news and do some research.
Does anyone have some good quality links on what is happening on the AZ/Mexico border I can send her? She will read them.

The problem with that thinking is we are dealing with a highly contagious illness. Yes, I could die the next time I get in my car because someone crosses the yellow line and runs into me at 50 mph. But I do as much as I can personally to be safe on the road: seatbelt, avoid distractions, pay attention to my surroundings. And we should be able to expect other drivers to also adhere to the same rules. But obviously we deal with speeders, distracted drivers, impaired drivers, etc. To me, the willingly unvaccinated, non-maskers are the dangerous drivers on the road. They might be fine with the risk of their actions resulting in their death, but the rest of us don’t have to accept their selfishness and carelessness because it puts us and our loved ones in danger.

This is from June so I don’t know if/how anything has changed:

I swear these people follow the same source because I'm suddenly seeing this all over social media too. WTF. It's scary how a few misinformation sharers are this influential over large swaths of people.
Oh the Covid is due to illegals crossing the border by the truckload is ALL over here. Why? Abbott himself is spewing this shit. It's what his racist AF supporters want to hear.

I HATE him.
It's ridiculous to hear even from Texas where there *is* a long border, but I'm hearing it here. Like, people are claiming that unvaccinated "illegals" are infiltrating our neighborhood, very far from the southern border lol.
Not that it makes it much better, but the Tuesday update is always the number of cases diagnosed on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday so the 50 K is over 3 days.
ETA: i’m sure Florida will hit 50 K in a day soon if our testing capacity doesn’t cap out.

I'm getting the sense that some governors are thinking that while they make half-assed pleas for people in their states to get vaccinated, more people catching covid just brings them that much closer to herd immunity so they're like "meh." Not exactly the smartest strategy when your hospitals are also getting overwhelmed and when more variants will arise, but they're thinking what comes up must come down so they'll just ride this shit out. Infuriating.
I'm frustrated. The City won't do anything until they receive County guidance. The County won't do anything until they receive State guidance. The State isn't doing anything except rec'ing that everyone wear a mask in public indoor spaces.

I saw somebody comment something along these lines on a facebook post from our gov today. Something along the lines of "I want hogan to tell us how many illegals he's been forced to accept who are coming in on buses without vaccination"
Not because so many antivax people are suddenly bragging about their antibody levels on social media, but I am wondering how effective natural immunity truly is. Like, Louisiana is surging again, but they were also hit hard before. The Dakotas aren't doing so badly right now after, like, every third Dakotan was infected in the fall. Especially with the belief that way more people were infected than is officially counted...are a lot of people getting reinfected or not?
Just talking out loud.
From what H and other doctor friends are saying, (at least for hospital patients) it is not re-nfections, it’s unvaccinated, new infections. This, sadly, provides me with a little hope.
ETA: I obviously cannot speak for every pt in the hospital systems right now. I am sure they are there as well as breakthrough admits, but they are not the majority, by far.
There's a hospital down in Alexandria,LA that's starting to release covid admission #s in terms of vaccinated vs unvaccinated. I have no idea how their population compares to the state/US overall but it will be interesting (scary? Sad?) to watch.

their network is strong
Also in MD, and my state Senator posted this bullshit.
Yeah, I've seen the claim that Biden has bussed upwards of 20,000 "illegals" into Delaware and they all have covid.
It's not that big a place. We'd notice if an extra 20k people showed up.
LOL. unless they were all just sitting in traffic on 95. that'd be normal.
That's why Biden comes back to Delaware every weekend! He's using the Joe Jams (traffic caused by shutting the roads down for his motorcade) to sneak in more illegal immigrants!
The drummer is claiming he received medical advice against it, but who knows at this point.
The biggest WTF about this is the lead singer has a PhD in molecular biology and published papers on mRNA. I mean...this drummer had to know he was playing with fire lol.

And not for nothing, but let's face it - certain industries would not be dealing with terrible staff shortages if a bajillion undocumented immigrants were flooding the entire United States.

I did not know this! Guess he is a fan of keeping separated from the crazies.
I was just reading this thread thinking about how I hardly have anything useful to say anymore. (Not that I often had much useful). But now, I’m just kind of watching from the sidelines, trying to think through my feelings on everything - which mostly revolve around how nothing has changed. Last week felt like reliving the week of March 9, 2020 again, with the landscape on Thursday so much different than it was on Monday.
