"Milwaukee Bucks fans celebrated the NBA championship outside. 500 still got covid, officials say."
I am just waiting to see what happens now that Lollapalooza is over as well.
I concluded what was concluded in this article - that it may not have been transmitted outside, but so many must have gone to bars, parties, etc. surrounding the area.
Or at least, that's what I hope. Because of the few silver linings I've found during this entire thing is that I feel really safe outside and if this ends up shattering that then I will cry.

I had a similar thought but also that all outdoor activities aren't created equal. I've been pretty comfortable with parks, beaches, outdoor restaurants, etc but in this setting there were over 80,000 people jammed so tight you could barely move. If it's shown that transmission happened in the watch area in the Deer District, I think I'll still feel comfortable with what I've been doing outside.

I agree. I think it's going to be a long while before I am personally comfortable being crammed into a space like this or like Lolla without a mask and with a bunch of other unmasked people, even if it's outdoors. Folks are like shoulder to shoulder with one another. I have been doing outdoor activities the entire pandemic, even in spring 2020. At that time, it looked like hiking on trails with no one around, walking around my neighborhood, or walking my dog at a park away from other people. Now, I've gone to baseball games and would entertain a local outdoor concert that isn't crowded like this and where I could move away from other people. We all have different comfort levels. Something like a huge outdoor festival isn't mine right now. Even if it comes out that outdoor transmission DID occur in a setting like that, it wouldn't alarm me. They are really crammed in there.

This & Lollapooloza don’t even look fun to me in my prepandemic life. Claustrophobic. Fingers crossed everyone bathed recently! Lol.
But also 500 cases out of 80,000 people is just .625%. Like, if an attendee was told there was .625% chance they’d get Covid if they went , I’d imagine most would still go?

Floridians warning people to stay away due to #deathsantis. Lolsob. When a metric shifting of marine life dead due to a red tide is only 2nd on your list of disasters, Danny.
I'm frustrated by my job. Well for many reasons but this one is due to them demanding everyone's vaccine status because "WE NEED IT!" This is especially annoying because they already have it. They offered time off for the vaccine but too hey it you had to send a screen shot of your vaccine card. I shared only the relevant part, but was interrogated over the rest. I absolutely do not trust them so I was not really comfortable even sharing what I had to.
They insist we need to work in person despite our job being 100% phone based and record breaking quarters when everyone worked from home. The building is also falling apart, the AC had a leak so bad that it flooded the building, one of the bathrooms was shut down, etc.

What is the "relevant part"? The vaccine card seems to be your name, dob, vaccine type/lot #, and location/date of each dose.

My name and the date. As my employer they don't need to know the rest. I did not want to share the location because I've had issues with stalking in the past.
Tweet from reporter for Colorado's tv news station 9news, showing data from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment on breakthrough cases. J&J significantly underperforming compared to the others, Moderna doing better than Pfizer.

im sorry you dealt with stalking. Doesn’t your employer have your home address? I’m puzzled because the location of my vaccination wasn’t particularly close to my home and at a pharmacy I never entered before. I’d think ‘vaccine location’ would be a very hard way to find a person (especially if they already have your address).
I’ll admit to being initially puzzled, but having been stalked, I get it. It’s scary because you have no idea how they put together the info they have, or where they got it, or what they’ll do to get more. And there’s the looming feeling that it could happen again with someone else you didn’t think to defend yourself against.
Seriously, just saying “I’ve had an issue with stalking” should be all that needs to be said.

Yes they have my home address.I have 4 dogs and two adults who live with me so it is not the same. There are dozens of medical centers and I did not go to my own medical center due to access, so not really the same thing.
Last month, experts in India labeled the variant one of concern and warned that it appeared to be more transmissible than most. Citing studies, the country’s health ministry said that the variant has the ability to bind more easily to lung cells and could be resistant to therapies used to treat the infection.
It also says this, it isn’t all doom and gloom.
Angus also noted that delta-plus cases have primarily been in younger people but that preliminary data has shown that antibodies from vaccinated people are still effective against the variant.
Thank you for this. I didn't read closely. Binding easily to lung cells scares me a lot due to my multiple sclerosis.
A cousin and I have been kicking around doing a reunion/memorial for our grandmother. I expressed concern about inviting my mom's cousin's wife because she's refusing to get vaccinated because she's a Qanon nutter. My cousin said that we shouldn't exclude anyone for the vaccination status. He then tells me that his younger sister isn't vaccinated and isn't planning on getting vaccinated. So, I'm guessing that's why he objects, not because he wants to see the Qanon nutter.
This makes me not want to do it. I didn't say that because I'm having a shit week and don't know if I'm reacting with a level head. And I definitely don't have it in my to negotiate anything.
Ive been here like 30 hours and been to the Mall of Emirates twice, and everyone is masked in Dubai, all the time, even outside. Of the eligible population, 91 percent are fully vaxxed, and they are requiring masking until everyone can get it. It's a bit refreshing.
There are a lot of things wrong with a government like this, but handling public health ain't one of them.
winecat, yeah, I'd say no to that unless you are going to be doing the reunion outside in a space where you won't have to spend a lot of time close to the non-vaxxers.
This article does a good job explaining (including the math!) why from a public health perspective it's better to focus on increasing the number of people fully vaccinated than providing boosters (high risk individuals are a different story). Basically, getting the second dose to the 30 million people who already have one is as effective as giving 180 million boosters.
mrsukyankee- The plan is to rent a big Airbnb and stay together for a few days. We've done that before and it's been great to hangout. Most of us will be traveling to get to the town where we usually gtg.

"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
erbear, mrsukyankee- I can't believe that my cousin isn't vaccinated. Like it never occurred to me that she wouldn't be. The cousin I was speaking to said he didn't want to bring it up because it's "political" and that there are "probably" others who aren't vaccinated. I'm not sure where he gets that because I've spoken with my aunt and she knows the vaccination status of her immediate family and her siblings and they are all vaccinated mainly because of their 103 year old mother/grandmother. Fuck. I hate this shit.

How would y’all handle a friend who had COVID last September, says she still had antibodies as of June (she got an antibody test to travel), and refuses to get the vaccine because ReAsOnS? I’m annoyed with her on the principle of it, but is there any data about how natural immunity compares to the vaccine? I know I’ve seen stuff about people who had Covid who get the vaccine having an a really robust immune response, but I haven’t seen a ton about just how important it is for people who had it to get the vaccine. So I don’t know how justified I am in my annoyance and how much I should be avoiding her and if that avoidance is based on pure spite or actual science.

Everything I've heard or read (via reputable sources) says that people that had COVID should still be vaccinated, b/c the protection is way stronger from that vs. solely from past infection.

Thank you notsopicky and bears. This quote from the one you both linked is what she keeps pushing:
“ We should note that the science regarding how much protection a natural infection offers compared with a vaccine is still developing. But the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends COVID-19 vaccines for people 12 and older, even if they have been infected before.
"That’s because experts do not yet know how long you are protected from getting sick again after recovering from COVID-19," the CDC website says.”
Like, ok it won’t hurt to get the vaccine according to them, but she thinks as long as she just keeps getting antibody tests there’s no proof she ISN’T protected. She says she’s worried about side effects of the vaccine. She’s had one semi-rare health event (post-partum eclampsia) so she feels like even if a side effect is super rare, she would get it.

TR, I'd push the "have you talked to your doctor about your worries about side effects" because I'd imagine that the two would have nothing to do with each other (birth and a vaccine) but I could be wrong.

What I told people, since I had COVID and got the vaccine (and work around a lot of people who are vaccine hesitant or resistant) is that from what I've read, immune response from an infection is variable immunity and there's not a guarantee that it will be good protection in the long run. I don't remember what I read when I was home with COVID in December, but this is one of the articles I've found in a quick search today: www.jhsph.edu/covid-19/articles/why-covid-19-vaccines-offer-better-protection-than-infection.html
