I don’t know what the solution is really. And I get that people are over the pandemic. But these assholes are teaching their kids such bad behaviors and are simply prolonging the pandemic. I read some comment on social media last night that “they” (meaning the democrats) just want the pandemic to last forever, and that’s why we are back to masking. I wanted to scream, “No!! We are back to masking because your bad, ill-informed choices are prolonging the pandemic!!!”
Our district, very surprisingly, came down strict on mask mandates for all grades. However, ALL other precautions are lifted, including quarantine for direct exposure. So, a person who is symptomatic or known (admitted) positive should be on an individual quarantine, but class stays open, even for a known, whole-class exposure. As of right now, I’m not even sure that parents will be notified in these cases. Seems like a good way to infect an entire class in a very short period of time.
We also have big, loud “anti-muzzle” groups here who are organizing a plan to refuse to mask their children. Their approach is basically “they can’t send hundreds of kids home from school daily.”
I’m not feeling great about this.
Ugh, I hope that doesn't happen here but I totally can see it happening re: mask refusal groups.
I wish they would just send a class home and require them to get tested before returning instead of either ignoring the confirmed positive in the class or quarantining everyone for so long. That way it's only a few days' inconvenience if negative and not 10-14 days.
Yeah, something has to change with quarantining. I'm not sure what exactly, but quarantining kids for 14 days after any exposure isn't reasonable or realistic, especially if everyone was masked.
jewel could they stick all the kids refusing in a multipurpose room or something and put an “in school suspension” on their record? Teaching kids to blatantly not follow rules, is so entitled. These aren’t rules that discriminate or oppress a group of people. It’s a blanket all wear masks regardless of any factor rule. Maybe the threat of something going on their record that colleges see would make these parents sing a different tune?
Absolutely, they should treat it as they would kids breaking any other rule. If they can’t be in class, their academics are affected and in turn, they lose privileges to partake in sports or other school activities. Guaranteed most of those kids probably give far less of a shit about wearing masks than their parents do.
I think the schools should state if a child comes to school without a mask, they will be given one to wear, and if they refuse, then the parents are called. Kind of like they might with dress code enforcement. The parents can then decide how much they’re willing to be inconvenienced for their convictions here.
The anti-mask group plans to tell their children to refuse to go to the office, and as parents, refuse to pick them up.
This is insane!! WTF is wrong with people? I bet when there were issues they actually should have been fighting for (like Black lives) they were all - keep politics out of school.
I'm very happy with how DD's school district has handled Covid from the start. Here's their current guidance on mask refusal:
What happens if a student refuses to wear a face mask? Will student refusal to wear a mask constitute a disciplinary violation?
Face masks will be required for all students, staff, parents and visitors. Every attempt, including re-educating and supporting the students, will be made to ensure that the student and the student’s parents understand the importance of wearing a face mask. If these attempts are unsuccessful, the school/District will work with families to identify the more appropriate learning arrangements including remote learning options. School administrators, in consultation with their School Level Response Team, should use their best judgment in determining if a student’ refusal to wear a mask is a situation requiring re-educating or discipline.

I fully believe the only ones who have an issue with their kids wearing masks are the parents. Kids are adaptable and if everyone around them is wearing them they likely will too. Although, my daughter has a classmate whose mom was super anti-mask last school year and my daughter would always tell me that this classmate always had her mask below her nose, so who knows.

This is how my school handled it last year. Can’t wear your mask right? We have a virtual option that might work better for your family. We had to do it exactly once and the mask complaints and wearing them wrong stopped.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

I think it all depends on the environment. DD had no problem wearing a mask 8 hours a day last year. By the end of the school year she was over it but they were all in together. She didn’t complain.
This year she’s already complaining and school hasn’t even started yet. She knows she will be one of the only ones masking and thinks it’s not fair. Which it’s not. Totally dreading this school year more than last.
Yeah I think attitudes have changed quite a bit over the summer with mask wearing. Heck mine has changed. Now I am extremely resentful over it. I know my youngest is as well. He never ever complained about it last year. Nor did I ever complain.
But I think now it is obvious to all of us that the rule followers are going to continue to follow rules, but with the fear that this shit is never going to end. We continue to have to carry the burden of safety. And the assholes will get to still be assholes. My kid sees it. I see it. It is not as easy these days to just do the right thing.

Yeppppp. Especially when you are in an area where following the rules is rare.
I am coming across a lot more parents that are deciding to just not test as much anymore because of quarantine requirements for any symptoms that are not severe. Kid has a mild cough and diarrhea - ehhh, keep them home for a day or two, but then send them back to camp without testing.
I feel like we will see a lot more of this in the coming school year. My school is requiring masks indoors (unclear on outdoors) and then they require 10 day quarantine for covid or close contact with a covid case. My sense is that parents are going to be much more... liberal (in denial?) about symptoms and keeping kids home than last year for any mild symptoms. I'm curious to see how it all plays out once school actually starts.
eddy, your post echoes our family struggles as well. My kid sees other kids not wearing their mask while she is in hers. It's hard because if people would just follow the rules, we wouldn't be in this next wave.
I'm also worried about bullying now that masks are optional. Why do we have add another thing?
It is Cuomo being Cuomo I guess. Functionally you'll see a mosaic set of rules and procedures. If covid wasn't so politized that might be even a good thing but likely we'll see decisions made through a political lens in each district.

There was a protest against masks at the local department of health for our school district. One sign compared kids wearing masks to slavery!
I was also talking to the woman who is the VP for PTO (I’m the PTO president) and she said masks are child abuse. I can’t believe I have to work with this woman. 🤦♀️
It still boggles my mind that people can be so selfish when it comes to masking up.
Mask mandate for all schools just got passed in my district. School starts Tuesday and the mandate begins tomorrow, which is great because almost no one is wearing masks in all the teacher planning meetings thus far and it's freaking me out (even though almost all of us are vaccinated).

Poeticxpassion I've seen masks called child abuse, too. I've seen people claiming that our school is participating in segregation because it included a line in the handbook about distancing during lunch time and that vaccinated children do not need to distance according to rules set forth by the health department. I've seen a whole lot of screaming about discrimination.
I'm rocketing-into-the-sun heated about the insensitivity and invalidation of real evils because kids have to wear masks in the classroom. Just. fuckin. furious.

For sure.
I am. Luckily we can easily afford the OTC tests, so I plan to use those. But a year ago I was all about quarantining for 10 days and not testing for 5 days, and not using rapid tests. Now I'm like fuck it. I'm not keeping you home. If you pass the rapid home test and have mild symptoms, it's off to school you go.

Which ties in nicely with what a doctor friend of mine was telling me. She’s seeing a lot more people test negative for longer before testing positive 3-5 days after symptoms. It’s like Delta is a whole new virus to her.
Which isn’t to say I haven’t been doing the same thing with my kids. I am over having them home all the fricking time.

Just dodged an exposure. Someone in DD's daycare class just tested positive. Kid had last been in on Monday but DD had been out all week with her own cold (tested negative Tuesday) so the health department said she doesn't have to quarantine and can stay in daycare while the rest of her class does. Curious if they'll inform us of other positive tests. The kids are masked but I definitely get pictures throughout the day where they're off, not on right.
My kids' district just announced that everyone inside buildings or busses will be required to wear masks. I'm relieved but not surprised. I'm grateful that we live in a district where the vast majority of parents support the use of masks.
I'm also not surprised that our governor (Whitmer) is not issuing a mask mandate after all the b.s. she went through last year. The Michigan DHHS issued recommendations to follow CDC guidelines but that's it. I honestly think that's the best she can do because some people insist on being idiots. I bet some anti maskers probably wish she would mandate them again so they'd have something to complain about.
I am in shock...we got an email today that masks will be strongly encouraged but not required. I am despondent. I did not expect our district to go this way at all. We can't do distance learning.
School doesn't start until after Labor Day, so I guess things could still change. But if they do, that means the cases are going up and I don't want that either. I hate everything.

I'm our PTA president (last term!) and about 1/3 of my board is this way right now... and I am not sure how I'm going to make it through this year. These parents were also the most vocal about going back in person and kept saying they'd do anything to send their kids back. Same board members who didn't want to do anything for teacher/staff appreciation because they felt they had done most of the work.

I'm so jealous. Our superintendent said they will only require them if there's a mandate. I'm feeling so defeated. I was so hoping for a mandate for Michigan. I guess my only hope is a county mandate? The kids only went to school 4 days a week last year (after on and off virtual) along with all of the other standard protocols, and now nothing. I want to cry.
There will be limited virtual learning if you test positive for Covid. I guess this will be on teachers to figure out?! Jesus. There is no funding for it. You can come back when not sick. Close contacts will be notified but don’t have to quarantine.
Just kill me. This school year is going to be a shitshow.
There’s still a month to go when a lot can change. I’m not going to worry until we get closer. Last year, the rules changed up to the day school started.

Yes, I agree. But to offer zero guidance? I just wasn’t expecting that. I know my district has been waiting to hear, so why wait so long to make this announcement.

We're in DPS and SO thankful they mandated masks. I'm our PTO chair (for the second year, since no one volunteered to take my place), and last year we bought mask lanyards for everyone in the building. And by the end of the year most of the kids were so used to wearing their masks that they forget to take them off once school was out. Our kid is fairly sensitive and conscientious for his age, and he's hyper-aware of whether or not people are wearing masks and told us he feels safer wearing one, so he was going to wear one whether they mandated them or not. And I think since we're further into the city than a lot of schools and thus generally have a more progressive set of parents, the vast majority of our community is pro-vaccine and pro-masks. We used the Old Navy ones all last year, but I stocked up on the VistaPrint ones for this year, along with a healthy supply of filters.

I’m SO disappointed in CCSD decision about masks. They were pretty reasonable last year and I felt like they did a decent job having students in the classroom but keeping it safe. I figured they’d follow DPS and Jeffco’s decision. I’m worried that no one in my kids’ classes are going to be wearing them now 😔
