I think they will. We've had a few security-related incidents at work because we still require masks even though we don't have to. And people have just given up. It's almost like after Delta really started surging, people started wearing their masks even less. A restaurant I pick up lunch from on occasion no longer has its employees wearing masks even though they were doing so long after the mandate was lifted here. DH went to an ice cream shop last night and there was a giant sign saying everyone must wear masks, including those vaccinated, so after he went back to his car to grab one, he goes in there and only 1 other customer out of about 5 was wearing a mask. And I don't blame the young shop staff from not engaging. A mandate would help.
A mandate would absolutely help where I am. our cases are only now starting to tick up (we just tipped over into "substantial" the other day), but we had fantastic mask compliance here generally and I have no reason to believe that people wouldn't just put them right back on if given the direction to do so.
Which...I guess now they have in terms of CDC guidance, but it's not been put back in place at the county level unless I missed something. (neighbors feel free to correct)
Nope. As far as I know, only the city has a mask mandate so far. According to CDC guidance, most/all of the state should be masked again. I am hoping it's only a matter of time?
I wish the county where I work would mandate them. I think work leadership wants to follow state and local guidance, and without that we are just charging forward without masks. We have a vaccine mandate, which is great, but it sounds like that's not enough anymore. We are 100% back to the office and have 23k more people arriving on our campus in a few weeks. TBH, I'm not sure masks would even be enough with that many people congregating indoors all day every day near each other, but it's better than not even trying...
I think DeSantis and Abbott are just used to getting their way, don't want to give in, and have zero empathy. They are also both up for re-election next year and are pandering to their base. I don't think there is any long game though...they just don't want to be told what to do.
This is also my read.
PDQ I’ve mentioned this before, but I know DeSantis (at least I did in college). What you’re seeing is how he’s always been - political, stubborn, entitled, privileged white dude athlete who is used to getting what he wants. Tale as old as time.
FWIW, I believe his kids go to a private school that is - wait for it - mandating masks 🙄

Well, whoever it was that posted a few weeks ago about people with allergy symptoms having grakthroigh infections - thanks! That stuck with me, and when the H, who has been having bad allergies the past few days went to lay down with a headache, I happened to mention that to the H, and he got up and drove over to the local testing place (about 2 miles away). He said the line is crazy. Which is interesting because we were there just riding around exploring, on July 22 and it was empty. So yeah… good times.
I’m going to an outdoor concert (BB&T for the locals) tomorrow. I haven’t heard anything about vaccines or masks so I’m assuming those are out but I’m planning to mask anyway. We have lawn seats so open air and its not sold out so I’m hoping for some space around us.

IL has almost 4K cases today which is way more than we’ve had in recent weeks.
I just got my hair done and wore a mask but was the only person wearing one so just hoping that’s good enough 🤞🏻 I really don’t want to have to go back to not getting my grays covered for months on end.
I am really not understanding how the vaccines aren't putting more of a dent in these surges in case numbers. I looked at Harris County's numbers and it looks like 45% of the population (55% of 12+) is fully vaccinated. Okay, that's maybe not widespread-immunity levels, but I am struggling to wrap my mind around how case counts can be so much higher than previous surges, even though now there is a significant portion of the population fully vaccinated. And didn't schools just barely start? So it feels like they can't be contributing that much to spread just yet?
Did human behavior really change that much between the last surge and now, even in Texas? Is this what Delta's increased transmissibility looks like? Are breakthrough and repeat infections way, way higher than we think they are? I don't know what's happening.
This is definitely what increased transmissibility looks like. Original virus had an R0 of 2, alpha was like 3-4, Delta is something like 6-7 (I was just reading about this this morning). That is a huge increase in spreading capability. And I know here in CO human behavior has seemingly changed a ton. Way more parties, way less masks in anyplace I go, places back to full capacity. My hospital doesn’t even test before surgeries anymore. We still had mitigation efforts going on during the last surge. There are now none, but with a much more transmissible virus. It sucks.
We just took a quick trip to the Castle Rock area. We were the only ones wearing masks the majority of the time. It was so strange. And people looked at us like we were crazy. Lol! Such a weird experience coming from California. We drove there and I told my husband on our way home I knew we weren't in CO anymore because at least half the people we saw were wearing masks.

I'm getting so angry about this. When I got my eyebrows done last fall for the first time in however long, I was obviously masked, and the person doing my eyebrows had a mask and face shield on. She was saying how none of that PPE bothers her at all because it finally lets her do her job that she missed during the shutdown. Like, masks don't have an impact on most kinds of businesses. And now we even have these wonderful vaccines! I cannot believe we have to have these same kinds of conversations again. How soon people forget.
Yeah rubytue , and it doesn't help that he is a doctor. So they latch onto credentials when it suits them. I did contribute to the number as well because I was all wtf is this thing circulating???
From the folks I saw critiquing him, I assumed he was a “functional medicine” woo doctor. But I looked him up, and actually MD. *grumble* health.usnews.com/doctors/daniel-stock-479689
He describes himself as a functional medicine doctor doesn't he? I can't bring myself to watch though. I found this helpful to share with the anti-vaxxers/antimaskers quoting and sharing him.
We are going to a concert tonight, outdoor venue, I'm so excited. I mentioned to my husband how I'm hopeful to get a free upgrade to the pit or front row section (which happened the last two times I went to shows at this venue in the before times) and he's like "but won't that increase your covid risk". Well damn, it will I guess but give me something to look forward to

Not all Coloradans! Castle Rock has been pretty anti-mask, anti-COVID, etc..
I'm just so discouraged. Our state CDC posted a few days ago that we're at 80% of the state population with at least one vaccine, and yet today I have medical friends posting that all our major hospitals currently have no beds available and people waitlisted in the ER. Things felt so hopeful at the beginning of the summer and now everything's awful again.
Man, if your state is hurting, that does not bode well.
It partially can be a staffing issue as well. Some hospitals aren't overrun with patients, but are really struggling with nursing shortages.
I am FULLY supportive of hospitals mandating vaccines. But I am really nervous what this will do to the already existing nursing shortage. I read somewhere that nursing as a profession has some of the lowest vaccination rates. Nurses are leaving the profession due to burnout. Will more leave when they are mandated to get the vaccine? I hope someone smarter than me is considering this.

On the other hand, we've had some major outbreaks among unvaccinated hospital staff, also leading to staffing shortages. Having nurses willing to work for you but too sick to work (or a COVID hazard to the patients they'd be taking care of) is not much of a solution. At least if someone quits because they don't want to get vaccinated, you can try to hire a replacement. And not nearly as many will actually quit as are threatening it. Especially if most/all hospitals start requiring it, which would mean staff can't simply move to a different hospital without the requirement.
well huh....just got this communication from DC's vendor system.
"By requirement of Mayor’s Order 2021-099 effective immediately, all District government contractors and grantees shall ensure, by no later than September 19, 2021, that each of their employees, agents, and subcontractors who provide goods or perform services in person in District of Columbia facilities or worksites, or who have in-person contact with other persons in order to complete their work under the contract or grant have been either: (i) fully vaccinated against COVID-19, or (ii) granted one of the exemptions identified in Section III of the Order by the contractor or grantee, are undergoing weekly COVID-19 testing and only reporting to the workplace when such test result is negative, and are wearing masks while working."
HoCo folks, Merriweather testing is definitely still happening. Lines are long these day. They do both rapid and PCR. Rapid was back 15 minutes after H got home (negative). PCR back tomorrow. It is weekdays 8-3. H was in line at 2:20, registered by 2:57 and they let him through. But cut off the line someplace behind him. He was home by 3:40, and like I said, rapid results shortly thereafter (before now, and it’s not yet 4).
I know a few weeks ago someone was wondering where to get a test locally. So thought I would report out.

Yeah, outside of the main metro Denver area, you can kiss any semblance of COVID precautions goodbye for the most part.

You guys, one of the biggest anti-maskers and antivax people in a local FB group just said she will never get the vaccine because she’s already had covid twice. Jesus take the wheel.

According to our leadership, staff overwhelmingly favor vaccine mandates... so we are really just catering to the 15% who are holding out.
As of now, we have no vaccine mandate (coming end of Sept through the state) and my dept is already dealing with a massive staffing shortage. Some due to staff infections and some staff unwilling to come to work in these conditions. I'm personally working the minimum shift requirement until all staff are vaccinated, then I plan to again offer to assist more. So a mandate may help bring some hesitant staff back...

I’m getting my hair done right now (sitting under the dryer). I double masked and I’m vaccinated. I hate feeling nervous about this.
Thankfully the salon policy is to mask regardless.
The last time I got my hair cut was a year ago. And before that was another year. Ugggh
The university system in town had said it was up to each campus on what they wanted their mask/vaccine mandates to be. Today, the main/in town campus said that all faculty, staff, and students need to be vaccinated and must wear masks indoors. Which is fantastic. They have already determined that 20k of the students (out of 28kish) are already vaccinated without a mandate. Hoorah!

FoCo has determined that this is a lie.
Lol, I did say “for the most part”. Not absolutely everywhere! There are a few places that kept up with precautions (like some of the mountain towns somewhat, Boulder, FoCo). But yeah. Most other places, if I walk into a store, the chance of me being the only person masked goes up pretty dramatically.

Colorado varies so much. I was at a large grocery store in Granby a few weeks ago and almost everyone was masked. There wasn't even a sign on the door!

DH and I are currently waiting for test results. I feel like it's going to say I'm positive, and I hope I'm wrong. I'm so annoyed. All those people going around saying masks don't work--well, they sure kept me safe until all the unvaccinated people were running around not wearing them, even though they're still supposed to be.

@@@@@@@
Our pediatricians office mandated the vaccine for all staff and lost SEVEN nurses/front desk employees. It was 15% of their total staff. We got an email asking for patience because they’ve had a hard time filling the spots and everyone still there is experiencing burnout.
